Mrs. Cucumber Sandwich's Picture
Mrs. Cucumber Sandwich, Washington, DC/Cape May, NJ Age and Occupation: 28, School Counselor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 40, Collegiate Athletics Engagement Date: March 27, 2010 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Congress Hall Hotel About Me: I am a school counselor who spends my day wrangling children and my nights attempting to be creative with wedding projects. My enthusiasm for each of these activities far surpasses my skill. Thank goodness Mr. Cucumber Sandwich is there to pick up the pieces and be the voice of reason about my DIY tries. I have an obsession with terrible romantic comedies (‘From Justin to Kelly’ anyone?, anyone?!?), competitive Scrabble play, and hot dogs. I could eat astronaut ice cream for every meal and can’t seem to resist buying more shoes. Our wedding is going to be a true hodge podge of semi-destination, tradition, Yuengling, New England charm, with just a dash of ‘Jersey Shore’ thrown in. It has been six years in the making and I can’t wait to marry my best friend.
About Mrs. Cucumber Sandwich

Wedding planning has started to take a turn for the stressful. I had another wedding nightmare last night. So Mr. Cucumber Sammie and I did what we do best and procrastinated! We have started focusing on the the fun stuff and ignoring the things that need to get done. We are looking at places for our honeymoooooon!

We can’t take a regular honeymoon (honeymooooon!) right after the wedding, so we are going to take a mini-moon. The mini-moon has to be close to South Jersey because we need to be back at work on the Thursday after our Sunday wedding. (Don’t weep for the Cucumber Sammies, though; we plan to take a full honeymoon next summer.) Here are a couple of places that top our list.

The Eastern Shore. The “Eastern Shore” is the area on the east side of the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland and Virginia. This is a huge area, and there are tons of places to stay. Maybe we could even stay in Chincoteague and see the pony swim?!?

That option seems a little far, though. Or perhaps we will go to Cambridge, Maryland and stay here…

I die! There is loads to do on the Eastern Shore, including golf, relaxing, bay cruises, and did I mention relaxing?

Another place on our short list is Colonial Williamsburg. It might be fun to play tourist for a day or two. We could see some battle reenactments. I could put Mr. Cucumber Sammie in the stocks if he is being bad. So many options.

Finally my favorite (as of two hours ago) option is Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. It is only 90 minutes from D.C. and is billed as a spa town. Yes, please! And I have even picked out the perfect place to stay…Cacapon Resort State Park.

I am soooo confused about all things West Virginia (Mr. CS is from West Virginia, so that was a dig at him, not the state), but apparently they have state-run hotels in state parks? I have no idea if that is correct, but I decided it is. Basically what you need to know is that means cheap! And we could stay in a cabin all to ourselves with a fireplace. We could go hiking, fishing, golfing, or horseback riding. If we get bored at Cacapon, it is just a 10-minute drive to Berkeley Springs for some dining and spa-ing (yes, it is a word).

And tell me this place doesn’t remind you of Kellerman’s Resort from Dirty Dancing. Who knows, maybe I will meet Patrick Swazye and he will teach me to do the rumba! Oh wait…honeymoooon.

Any other suggestions for our mini-moon close to D.C.? Who else procrastinates by Googling honeymoon locations?!

The only place I can think of in that area is Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg. The company I used to work for acquired it and everyone talked about how beautiful it was all the time. It also is supposed to have super golf courses if you’re into that. And it’s right by Busch Gardens if you enjoy amusement parks.

Oh! If you guys are wino-s, you should check out some of the awesome historical B&B type places around Leesburg! Or, do you look at the Living Social Escapes? They always have awesome ideas!

It may be too far, but Mountain Lake is about 5 hours from DC in Southwest Virginia and actually is where Dirty Dancing was filmed.

Make sure you REALLY check out Berkeley Springs first. I have two sets of grandparents that own cottages there and in the past few years it has been a ghost town due to all the “remodeling” they are doing. They are trying to make it a more attractive spa place but the last time I was there it was just the springs, a spa, and some antique stores. Good luck!

I live on the Eastern Shore, so I kind of LOL at the idea of people coming here to vacation! It’s a beautiful area of the country, with tons of activities based on the water, but little else. Cambridge is a beautiful place, and that picture is the Hyatt I believe. The Chincoteague Pony Swim is interesting for the 20 minutes it takes them to swim across, honestly. Then there’s the pony auction the next day after the horses have been inspected, which is neat, but kind of sad to watch. Just a warning.

There are some really beautiful trails to walk and lots of beautiful beaches, but the inland stuff is mostly farming and shopping. It’s much cheaper to stay somewhere inland because you can reach ocean or bay within 30 minutes from any point on the Shore, and rivers that are stunning and great for boating and water activities even quicker. I highly recommend wherever you go spending a few days out on the water - it’s what being on the Eastern Shore is all about! I highly recommend Talbot County if you’re looking for somewhere a bit fancier to stay. The Town of Easton is AMAZING with B&Bs and they really take care of their downtown with tons of delicious restaurants and great little shops where you can find amazing things. It’s near St. Michaels, which is beautiful for walking around and going out on the water. The farther south you go on the Shore, the more rural it becomes. For example, Somerset County is almost completely farm-land, but the beaches on the Bay are almost always empty and secluded. You can drive from tip to tail of the shore in about an hour…so you can really explore everything!!

Good luck planning it out and if you and your hubs decide to visit us Shorebillies you’ll have a great time!!

@littlenikki: wow, thanks for all the information! I have actually been the the pony swim when I was a little girl and you are completely right, fun for a couple minutes and then kind of sad. Thanks so much for your help!
