Mrs. Knitting's Picture
Mrs. Knitting, Toronto Age and Occupation: 24, Student Recruitment Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Neuroscience PhD Candidate Engagement Date: October 2009 Wedding Date: December 2010 Venue: University of Toronto Faculty Club About Me: I'm a pearl wearing, etiquette book reading Toronto girl who loves cooking and baking, museums, charm bracelets, and collecting books on Jackie Kennedy (a lot). I've been known to spend Sunday mornings at the antique market, Wednesday evenings at sister sushi dinners, and any bit of spare time reading. After six and a half years of many late night walks, watching DVDs together in bed, travelling to places like New York, and Tobermory, doing Sudokus together on the couch, lots of Indian food, the occasional yoga class, moving in together and so much more, Mr. Knitting and I are planning a cozy Christmasy (it's a word!), vintage wedding in Toronto complete with many DIY projects (eek!) and lots of help from our amazing group of family and friends.
About Mrs. Knitting

Before I got engaged I thought that women never removed their wedding or engagement rings. Both my mother and my sister never take off their rings and I thought that was the norm. As a result when I realized that I can’t stand wearing my ring around the house I thought I was super weird, especially since my ring (it’s an engagement/wedding ring) is a very wearable ring.

Here’s the thing: when I get home I’m pretty much always wearing something pajama-like, so wearing my pjs along with the most valuable thing I own (financially and sentimentally) felt really weird. To be honest it bothered me to the extent that I sometimes found it difficult to sleep while I was wearing it (obviously, I’m very easy going!).

My favourite look:

I soon decided that this was crazy and that it’s just a piece of jewellery (it has a bit more sentimental value of course, but still). Just as I wouldn’t wear a bracelet around the house, there’s no need for me to wear my engagement/wedding ring around the house if it makes me that uncomfortable. Now everyday when I come home I almost immediately take my ring off and put it in its case. I’m very careful that I always put it in the same place because I’m always a bit scared of losing it while it’s off my finger!

I’m very happy with this system because it makes me more comfortable, but also because I think it makes me appreciate my ring a lot more than I would if I wore it all the time. This way, it becomes this lovely accessory I get to put on every day, as opposed to something to something that has just become a permanent part of my body.

Where do you fall on this issue? Ring(s) all the time or just sometimes?

I take my rings off the second I get home too!

I wear my engagement ring all the time, except at the gym when I do weights. When I have taken it off I end up leaving the house without it. But once I get the wedding band I will probably sometimes only wear the band.

I’m the same way, Knitting! I felt so bad when I realized that I liked coming home and taking off my e-ring, but I just feel so much more comfortable and relaxed without it! I’m not much of a jewelry person, so I guess I’m just not used to wearing big heavy jewelry all the time.

I never sleep with my rings on. My fingers swell too much. I end up taking my jewelry off well before bedtime when I’m puttering around the house

I actually shed all other jewelry when I get home, but my rings usually don’t come off until bedtime (well, and washing dishes/cooking).

I do the same thing Erin does, and for the same reasons. Sometimes I can’t wear my e-ring during the day because my fingers are too swollen, or it starts to cut into my finger a bit too much.

I wear my wedding band all the time but often take my engagement ring off. One of the reasons why I wanted a plain metal band was so that I felt more comfortable wearing it all the time (I’ve worn 2 silver rings on my right hand forever, so I’m used to rings, but very unused to an expensive ring!)

I’m the same way. My ring comes off the second I get home and goes back to the original box he proposed with. I also don’t wear my ring to work because of the nature of my job. I guess the times I get to wear my ring are a little more limited but that makes it more special for me.

Although I’m on team wear your ring all the time - I just have to say I LOVE YOUR RING! It is so pretty and I just had to tell you.

I don’t take it off just for hanging out around the house, but I do take it off every night before bed or when getting ready for bed. I know if I wear it while sleeping I’ll end up banging it against the headboard while I’m tossing and turning and I’ll ruin it (or at least, I’m paranoid that’s what will happen). And I don’t wear it when I’m cleaning, gardening, or exercising. But I always wear it when I go out and as much as possible when I’m at home.

This reminds me of something funny my friend said to me when she got married. She had me hold her e-ring during her ceremony because the wedding ring goes on the inside, and once it was on her finger she didn’t want to have to switch the rings around. She said, “Well, once it’s on, you’re never supposed to take it off.” I was like, “…so you’re never going to get it cleaned?” I don’t think she knew what to say. :-)

I keep mine on all the time, even when doing dishes. I do take it off when I’m doing something messy, and sometimes I take it off before going to the gym, but not always. It’s just habit to wear it, but I’m always afraid I’m going to lose it anyway! Like it’s just going to slide off (it won’t) and get lost!

I put it on after I shower and take it off before bed. Never wear it to bed, also take it off when I cook/clean/etc. NEVER wear it to bed though, I don’t like the feeling of it and I have heard it can damage the prongs. My Mom rarely wears either of her rings so I grew up with it being normal to not wear them which I think is why I wear mine all day (if that makes sense).

I’m in your boat Mrs. Knitting! I love my e-ring and wedding band but I’m just not the type to wear jewelry all the time.. my rings, watch, and earrings come off when I get home every day. I have always been this way!

I take mine off right when I get home too. Mostly because I’m usually on my way to the gym, but even when I’m not, I take it right off. It’s vintage and delicate (the shank needs replacing) so I’m very careful with it. I don’t see this habit changing much after we are married! I agree, it feels weird to have it on at home whilst in pj’s.

My fingers swell too much when I sleep, and I’m too paranoid about losing them while I exercise, cook, clean, etc, so I usually take my rings off at home. And now, with pregnancy, I’ve fought a good fight with swelling, but my rings are definitely becoming uncomfortable and the days of wearing them are numbered (until baby gets here). I think it bothers DH a little that I don’t wear mine at home– he’s very much in the “once the ring is on, it never comes off” camp– he hasn’t taken off his ring since we’ve been married.

I am the very same way, as soon as I get to our bedroom my ring comes off (and my work clothes too). I live in comfortable lounge wear and don’t see a reason to wear my ring around the house. I also exercise a lot and don’t feel comfortable wearing it then either. I teased my FI that it is my 8am-5pm accessory.

My best friend thought it was a little strange, she wears her ring everywhere. Hers is quite a bit smaller though so perhaps that makes a difference in what you can and can’t do while wearing it.

I wear my e-ring all the time… even when I’m sleeping! I only take it off when I’m showering. I have several pieces that I wear all the time though (my claddagh ring, a bracelet, etc) so it’s not that unusual for me. I feel naked without my e-ring on, even if it’s just for a little while!!

I take my ring off before I go to sleep too! I hate sleeping in jewelry. And it’s the last thing I put on before I leave the house, so it’s a nice way to start my day. I do wear it around the house, but take it off while cleaning, doing the dishes, and cooking. So it comes off and on a lot. It’d probably be easier to just leave it off when I get home! But I think it makes my pajama around the house look a bit fancier. :)

I wear my engagement ring all the time except when giving my dog a bath :)

It is a little big and sometimes bothers me, but it doesn’t feel right when I don’t have it on my finger. When we get married I am sure I will be wearing only the wedding band 90% of the time.

I wear my wedding ring all the time (coz it’s just a simple band), but I take off my engagement ring when Im at home mostly. No way would I sleep wearing it- it would drive me nuts!
