Mrs. Honey, Durango, CO Age and Occupation: 28, Financial Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Lab Tech/Phlebotomist Engagement Date: August 1, 2010 Wedding Date: January 2012 Venue: Vallecito Lake About Me: I am a Colorado girl through and through, marrying an adrenaline-fueled Alabama boy. We love the outdoors just about as much as we love spoiling our dog and three cats. On any given weekend you can find us being adventurous, doing anything from rafting to snowboarding, and everything in between. We live in an outdoor mecca and truly believe in "Work Hard, Play Harder." I'm an optimist to the core, a crafter wannabe, a Southern food cook-in-training and a big time believer in girls nights. We met, fell in love and got engaged in eight short months and are now knee-deep in planning what we hope to be a super-fun, very us wedding celebration. Join us as we plan a rustic meets whimsical, Colorado winter wedding with loads of personal touches and good food!
About Miss Honey

Somewhere in my bridal haze, I had imagined finding a venue to not be too difficult. Go ahead, you can laugh at me—I would laugh at me, too. I did really assume that it would be like asking “Will you be my venue?” I mean, you are paying to have a large event there—what could be so hard?

I think I assumed it would be fairly painless because we live in a small town. There isn’t a large selection of venues. In fact, the embarrassing truth is that according to Colorado Wedding Magazine, there are…drum roll, please…NINE venues available in the Durango area. Granted these are the structures/locations that advertise themselves as wedding venues. With a bit of creativity the options expand a tiny bit…unless you are like the Honeys and getting married with snow on the ground.

Sure a few of those nine venues are still available in the winter months, but we have to be a little more extreme because we want to have our wedding ceremony outside. You read that correctly: outside in January, in Colorado. I have always dreamed of and envisioned myself getting married outside. There was no other way, even in winter. And luckily Mr. H was fully on board. The majority of the weddings in our area do take place outside; I’ve only been to one over the years that took place indoors, and that’s because Colorado scenery is just breathtaking:

This was request number one: is there a way for us to say “I do” outside? We had a second request for our potential venues because we want photo ops like this:

That’s right, hive, our 100-pound handsome puppy dog will be rockin’ a tie for our big day. Here’s a refresher of our handsome dog:

Zeus likes to wear things; here is wearing beads and his backpack.

Before I even started contacting venues directly, I spent time researching who was even open year round; since we do get hefty amounts of snow here, many places are only open May through October. This narrowed down my list substantially, but it took even more work to try and uncover some hidden gems that may or may not be willing to get business in the oh-so-dead season. Armed with a contact list and my wedding requests/requirements, I started at the top…and by the top I mean the venues that were most intriguing to us.

The list was narrowed down very quickly. Here is a short list of the no-gos.

  • Cascade Lodge was beautiful, but they did not allow winter access to their outdoor ceremony site.
  • Purgatory/DMR was not available since, ahem, people are using the mountain for skiing.
  • Blue Lake Ranch was open in the winter, but only for a wedding with 40–50 guests.
  • Silverpick Lodge was willing to work with us on the outside request, but NO dogs allowed.
  • Abbey Theatre didn’t return any of our FOUR phone calls, so we were not interested.
  • Avalon Acres did not allow pets whatsoever.
  • The Glacier Club also never returned emails or phone calls.

On a side note, what gives with venues just straight up ignoring requests for information?!

After contacting the more obvious choices and having NO luck, we did start to think more creatively. Private mansions via VRBO. Ranches in the countryside. I got frustrated after one email from a coordinator questioned my ability to comprehend winters in Durango. Yes, LADY, I do know it SNOWS here. I LIVE HERE. Sense my frustration?

After all but giving up, finally finally I had three venues who would meet with us and were willing to accommodate our two requests.

Who else has (or had) special requests that made it a little more difficult to find the venue? Was anyone else’s venue list as teeny tiny as mine? Let’s hear it, hive!

Venue shopping was definitely more difficult than I expected, especially trying to find places in our area that didn’t require extra rentals (like tables and chairs). I’ve never been to an outdoor winter wedding-I’m curious how you plan to go about it? Especially if there’s snow?

My cousin got married in January, in Minnesota. No outside ceremony but she wanted outside pictures. She got some gorgeous ones of her in a cute faux mink crop jacket and her hubs. Very romantic. But the so cal portion of her bridesmaids ( all 2 of us) put our foot down from going outside. Our warm blood can’t handle it :)

I think I have about 5 choices near me! We looked at one hall and signed the contract that day. I’ve been to lots of weddings so I know most of the places in our area, and there are a few nicer ones… but this place was nice while still being a good price. Plus, I hate shopping around with this kind of thing. They had a package that included 6 hours of open bar, 4 course meal, late night food station, cocktails and hors doevres, unlimited wine during dinner, linens, seat covers… so much was just bam done so quickly!

we’re going the same route w/our dog as the ring bearer… trust me it is just as big of a challenge in the baltimore metro area. if i had one more venue think i was crazy, i might have seriously started to consider it…. the best we’re the outdoor venues that didn’t want to have us… um, last time i checked bunnies and deer and various other wildlife creatures defecate in the outdoors! at least we’ll pick our doggie doo up!

I was stunned by the non-responsiveness from some of our potential venues. One contacted me almost 6 months after our initial email! Way to think out of the box to find what you need!

I can’t wait to hear more about your search for the perfect venue, as well as which one you pick! I actually had never seen my venue prior to booking it. I was still living across the country, so I had to rely on my parents to venue scout for us, and they picked a pretty awesome one!

We had some definite preferences, but no “musts.” I love that you’re incorporating your pup! And we didn’t have any venues ignore us, but quite a few caterers did. They must be all full up on business!

Miss Honey,
We have an outdoor venue at the top of Vista Ridge overlooking the peaks of Rocky Mountain National Park. Let me know if you’d like a tour. Your guests will take a chair lift ride, and we encourage skiing down!

I bet I know which one wedding you went to that wasn’t outside. We were too young to be creative I guess. Sometimes (actually frequently) I wish we could have another wedding so that it could be more “us” as we are now, rather than the traditional, typical snoozer we had! I’m glad you’re getting married outside in January. It’s gonna be awesome!

PS - I feel weird that I don’t have a Mrs. name!

@katididit: With your amazing crafting skills, I have no doubt you would create a wedding that would end up in blogs! Perhaps the renewal of your vows :)

I am so interested to see you outdoor wedding in the middle of winter. I think it is going to be amazing. I am always surprised at unresponsive vendors. I am trying to give you money and you don’t want it?!!?

We really struggled in finding the perfect venue within our budget but once we did, everything started falling in place. Chin up!

We wanted outdoors and dogs too! We visited Andrews Lake when there was a wedding going on there and the MOB actually said to me “An outdoor wedding in CO in October? Good Luck and wear your snow boots” all snotty pants. As we pulled away it started raining (in July) Ha. I actually got sunburned on our wedding day it was so perfect. As for teh dogs, the Silverpick told us no too, we ended up paying an employee of Fat Cats Healthy Hounds to bring ours to the ceremony site to star in the show and then back for boarding overnight. She was happy to do it and it cost next to nothing.

@Valentine: Andrews Lake is so pretty! I love FCHH, we used to take Zeus a few times a week. That’s such a good idea, I will have to keep it in mind, thanks for sharing!!
