About Mrs. Teacup

Thinking about how Mr. Hot Tea and I met reminds me of those adorable couples in the movie When Harry Met Sally who describe how they fell in love.

Harry Burns: The first time we met, we hated each other.
Sally Albright: No, you didn’t hate me, I hated you. The second time we met, you didn’t even remember me.
Harry Burns: I did too, I remembered you. The third time we met, we became friends.
Sally Albright: We were friends for a long time.
Harry Burns: And then we weren’t.
Sally Albright: And then we fell in love.

From When Harry Met Sally

Whenever we begin telling our love story, it starts with a similar script, only set in a doctor’s office. You see, Mr. HT and I work for different companies in pharmaceutical sales. I like to say that we are legal drug dealers!

Don’t we look professional?

We met three different times in the same year. The first time was in a doctor’s office. Mr. HT warmly introduced himself. I, on the other hand, was private and reserved. I shook his hand, said hello, and went back to reviewing my product information while he waited to speak with the doctor.

Mr. HT says of that meeting he thought I was cute and stand-offish, and noticed an engagement ring on my finger. What he didn’t know at the time was the failing state of that relationship. Instead, he accepted I was taken and that was that.

Fast forward four months. I had mustered the courage to leave my ex after discovering hundreds of text messages written to a “friend” on our joint cell-phone bill. Suffering a bruised ego and broken heart, bi-weekly therapy sessions with a psychologist called in just for the occasion helped me get over a major depressive episode and helped make me confident enough to work again.

It was a late Friday afternoon in a doctor’s office in a nearby town. This time the tables were turned—I was in the back waiting to talk with the doctor when Mr. HT came in. The receptionist decided to revoke my welcome and called my name over the announcement system. Mortified, I rushed to the front desk. There stood a grinning Mr. HT. I remembered his name, but not our first meeting several months earlier. Annoyed to be called out, I reluctantly accompanied him back since he offered to introduce me to the doctor I was waiting for.

The doctor was nice enough and asked why Mr. HT was not yet dating me. [Side note: doctors and office staff had tried to set up dates for Mr. HT for years in an attempt to get him to settle down, so this question was apparently not out of the norm.] Mr. HT politely replied that I was married.

Dear hive, you already know that this was not how my story ended. And so I explained that while no longer engaged, I was one week into my fresh new start of work and life. Whaaaa?

Stunned, mouths agape, they tried to smooth over the situation with apologies. I was OK with it; part of healing was being honest with myself. Just like it says in the Bible, the truth shall make you free.

Of course there is a third time we met…and I’ll save that story for next time!

Now it’s your turn to share. I’m interested to know if it was at first sight or after a few choice encounters that you fell for your beloved?

Ha! We totally think of those scenes too!
The first night I met my now fiance (wedding in 15 days!!!), I was hurting from a recent breakup and flirting with another guy. My man said he liked me right away, but at first I thought he was kind of a sarcastic punk. “Somehow” he wound up next to me in the movie theater that night, and by the end of the evening we were friends. Fast forward two years and crappy relationships with others on both our parts, and we finally realized we were meant to be. Duh.

awwwww!!!! Cute story!!!
Long story short: met at workplace, lost touch, I married my ex in Michigan, came back to VA, emailed my FI, and the spark we had before turned into a raging inferno that hasn’t died and probably never will… it’s even more fun when our tempers flare, lol.
See, I can simplify things!!!

When Harry Met Sally is seriously my favorite movie ever. It never gets old!

I love your story, and I smiled at your honesty picturing the two meant standing there uncomfortable but wanting to comfort you.

Can’t wait to read what happens next!

Ever since I watched When Harry Met Sally, I’ve been in love with that movie; I’m in my 30’s and only saw it 6 months ago.

Aww….I can’t wait to hear about that moment the two of you realize you were meant to be together! My FI and I had a hard time getting together at first. I met him through a work colleague who took me out for drinks one night. We happened to run into FI (the friend of co-worker), who I instantly clicked with, and we ended up having a conversation lasting hours while everyone else around us got wasted. We each told this friend afterwards that we were interested in each other, but the friend wouldn’t supply either of us with a phone number. A couple of weeks later I was out with the friend and some other work-mates and FI was at the pub. It turned out he’d been going there every weekend since we met in hopes the friend would take me there again. We exchanged phone numbers, had our first date 2 days later, and we’ve been inseparable ever since.
The mutual friend, it turned out, had a crush on me. Which was why he wouldn’t facilitate our getting together. It came out later (when he suddenly cut communication with FI, and FI asked around) that he’d taken me to meet his friends that first night to get their opinion on his new squeeze - well, at least one of them had a VERY high opinion of me! OOPS!

Awww! You weave a great tale, TC! I also often think of When Harry Met Sally when I think about our story - we met two or three times before finally dating! :)

@Allyn: Awww, yours is a great story :)

@Ryna: Red hot! Now I know when I’m over-complicating things, I should ask you to set me on the simple and straight path!

@hollygowedding: I love your s/n :) I just re-watched it this weekend while baking cupcakes…it never gets old.

@JackieDe: What a good way to describe the situation, thanks :)

@Miss Sparkler: Thanks, Sparkler! It wasn’t easy, but it was for the best. Hate to be cliche, but everything happens for a reason!

@TheFutureMcBride: Oh girl! You need a 24-hour marathon to get to the point where you can quote it - lol :)

@puddingface: Wow! What a story. I can’t believe your friend would hold out on connecting you two, especially if he wouldn’t come out to say he liked you. Boo. When it’s meant to be, you find a way…congrats to you and your FI!

@Miss Godiva: Awww, that’s the best :)

@Miss Ladyfingers: Timing is everything :) Glad you found each other!

@Prewitt: Isn’t it so great?!

Mr CukeSammie and I met at work too! Our story is really boring though… we met at work, he begged me to go out with him ;) the rest is history. Your story seems so much cuter and I can’t wait to read the rest!
