About Miss Honey

When I left off, I had narrowed down my list of potential venues to three, yes, three. I was very eager to take the next step and actually look at them. I will admit I was a tad jealous of other brides who had longer lists, and I was a bit nervous that my venue list only included three. What would we do if those three weren’t what we wanted…or too expensive…or ended up not wanting to accommodate our requests? Venues have a lot of power over the direction of a wedding.

My mom and I scheduled the first meeting and went together because Mr. H was unable to get off work at that time. My mom had spoken with the lady and outlined our thoughts: winter wedding, outside, 150ish guests, doggy in attendance. On the phone she said, “Not a problem. We can work with this.”

We drove 10 miles west of Durango to Kennebec Cafe, a charming cafe nestled at the base of the La Plata mountain range. I adore this cafe, its food, and its atmosphere. She had just added on and finished a full wraparound patio outside: bonus. The inside was open and modern, with fireplaces scattered throughout.

We arrived and sat in the entry area for 15 minutes waiting for the lady; apparently she forgot and went on a quick walk: strike one. We did a walk-through of the building, and she proceeded to ask us the exact same questions my mom had gone over with her on the phone: strike two. She then told us that only half of the restaurant would be available at the time of our wedding, making it only able to hold 50 people: strike three. You’d think after three strikes we’d be out like trout, but we stayed and filled out an “application.” That’s when strike four occurred: her menu prices. Being that this is a restaurant, she obviously does the catering herself, which was fine, so we discussed our desire to have a casual dinner. And the casual menu cost per head? Twenty to thirty dollars. I don’t think we could have gotten out of there fast enough. On to venue number two.

We scheduled our next two visits for the same day because they were in the same area. The first was a recommendation from a family member who had been to a birthday bash at this private home mansion, called the Retreat at Thunder Ridge. The couple were in the beginning process of offering their home as a wedding venue, but we would be the first to get married in the winter. This home is spectacular:

The owners actually provide this home as a retreat for ministries. Because of this, I was actually a little hesitant; we are not a religious couple at all, and we didn’t want someone else to have expectations of how we should be married. The couple were incredibly nice and accommodating and shared pure joy with our vision. They were OK with the pooch and were on board for the outdoor winter ceremony. Their home in winter? To die for:

Then we started talking logistics. This is going to be a party, and we have friends (including us!) who like to celebrate with plenty of libations. We like loud, booty-shaking music. They weren’t really on board for Jager shots or hard alcohol period. Mr. H really enjoys Jager. They also wanted all of our guests to take their shoes off when in the mansion. I understood their concern, it being winter and potentially muddy out and they had beautiful wood floors from some far-off land. It just wasn’t going to fly because we like liquor and we would prefer our wedding-photo album to not include our guests’ socks. The other kicker for me? This guy was a world-traveling big-game hunter, and he liked to proudly display his “kills” on every.inch.of.wall.space. Me in my prettiest on my wedding day, with a dead zebra/bear/big-horn sheep in the background is not what I picture. Although it works for some couples who can rock the look of stuffed animals:

Even though this mansion was incredibly beautiful and the couple were delightful, logistically it just wasn’t going to work for us. Next up, we crossed our fingers hoping that the third venue would be a charm!

Was anyone else deterred from a venue because of the potential for off-the-wall photos, like guests’ socks?

WHAT? This couple plans to rent out their home as a venue and seriously expects guests to take off their shoes? Don’t think they’re gonna have much luck with that.

Wow, that’s a shame because that mansion is gorgeous… but maybe they should consider sticking with renting it out as a retreat location. I cannot imagine too many wedding parties are going to be happy to have everyone remove their shoes to get down and party! Can’t wait to see what venue you chose!

20-30 dollars a person for a catered meal sounds like a steal to me- however, I can see how her lack
of customer service skills could put you off. And shoes off at a wedding venue? Crazy!

The first didn’t seem half bad but the woman in charge needs to be on the ball more. I would had left after I realized she forgot our meeting. If that’s the case would she forget the day of your wedding. And no shoes really!!They have to realize if they are renting out their home it is surely not going to work on those terms. One venue I looked at had one bathroom and when I say one I mean ONE!!! I am having around 170 and porta potties were not happening at my wedding. Good luck on the venue search!!!!

This may be off the subject a bit, but I can’t believe there is a Durango bride posting on weddingbee!!! I also live in Durango and almost spilled my coffee when I saw the pic of Kennebec Cafe on the front page! I’m so disappointed that they weren’t more accomodating for you. I know Barbara and Miguel, the owners, personally, and can’t say enough good things about Miguel’s food. Have you looked into Blue Lake Ranch? I’ve heard it’s lovely. Best of luck, and I look forward to reading your posts!

I would have been so put off by the first appointment, especially by the repetition of questions! That mansion is unbelievably gorgeous. Looking forward to hearing about the third!

@draya: Hi to a fellow Durangoan! Don’t get me wrong, I love the Kennebec, it just turned out not to be our venue. Yes we looked into Blue Lake but it wasn’t large enough.

Those venues look gorgeous, but I would expect a bit more service from a wedding venue as well. I hope the third venue ended up being perfect for you!

Thunder Ridge looks absolutely amazing in both the summer and winter! And the photo taken in front of the stuffed animals (although not for everyone) turned out gorgeous, it looks like it was taken in the garden of eden or something! Save the date stamps Sharla

I think 3 venues is great if one of them end up being it! We began with a never-ending list, and I get very OCD about wanting to see everything before I mark it off my list, which is a complete huge waste of time. Also, OH NO to the first venue!

I can’t believe they wanted 150 people to take their shoes off before coming inside! That’s insane!

I’m going to try not to comment on every single one of your posts. It’s just so exciting to see the places I know so well. Ditto on the dead animals! I am going to a wedding there next spring, hope I get to keep my shoes, I could see it just be a “grab the ones closet to you” deal at the end of the party. Kennebec is fabulous for brunch but I’ve gotten some attitude from the owner as well, and we are in there a lot!

@Valentine: The mansion is gorgeous, and if the weather is nice I’m sure it will be outside so hopefully you won’t have the shoe dilemma :)
