I know, I know, I was mean. I’m sorry! But you will for sure get the final winner this time around. I promise! If you are just tuning in, you can find the back story of the brackets here and rounds 1-3 here.
The finalists were Mr. D’s choice of “Harder to Concentrate” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and my choice of “Better Together” by Jack Johnson. Mr. D’s first seed made it through to the final two, while mine was struck down by a 4th seed, and my own song at that.
First, we shall look at “Better Together.” For those of you not familiar with the song, here it is:
I really love the song “Better Together.” Actually, I love Jack Johnson period. He’s my favorite guy to listen to when I need soothing. There is a certain part of the song that I really feel tells a part of Mr. D’s and my song:
Love is the answer,
At least for most of the questions in my heart
Like why are we here? And where do we go?
And how come it’s so hard?
It’s not always easy and
Sometimes life can be deceiving
I’ll tell you one thing, it’s always better when we’re together.
Love really has been the thing that has kept us together through so much. I know how lucky it is that we have found a love so strong that we have come through the trials in our lives without falling apart. Mr. D agreed that this would be a perfect first dance song, and just when I thought I was going to win and this amazing song would be “our” song, he made the most compelling argument for his song.
Here is his song:
His argument was this heartfelt, moving, beautiful letter. Here is just a part of the letter:
“You have seen me through the best of my life and you have picked me up and carried me during the worst times of my life. So many times we have been faced with roadblocks and you have always been the first to fight for us. I know I am not always the best to vocalize my love and appreciation for you. You know I am a man of actions, and that actions speak louder than words. If you allow me to pick this song for “OUR” song, then I will be able to show you and remind you how much I love you every time you hear it. I want you to know that I mean this part in the song:
Our hearts about to palpitate
And I’m not about to hesitate
And want to treasure the rest of your days here
And give you pleasure in so many ways, dear
And finally you have found something perfect
You are that perfect thing that I have found in my life. I will treasure you for the rest of our lives. I will love you with every breath I take.”

How in the world could I possibly say no to that? There is no way that I could not let him pick “our” song when he clearly felt so deeply about it. And so, “Hard to Concentrate” will be our first dance. It will be “our” song.
The song is a faster tempo, so we will be attempting to take dance lessons to be better equipped to dance to it. I tell you now hive, I will have to shove several handkerchiefs in my cleavage, because I know I will bawl on the dance floor. I already tear up just listening to it. And really, isn’t that what your first dance song is supposed to be about?
If you didn’t really have a song as a couple, how did you choose your first dance song, what was it, and what does it mean to you?
