Here we are, 8 years later, living in Pittsburgh, planning a "homestination" wedding in the place our school romance began---Johnstown, PA. I thrive on talking a mile a minute, eating my weight in chocolate, and internet shopping. I love a lengthy to-do list almost as much as I love a healthy amount of chaos in my life. Mr. Snow Cone and I watch countless episodes of Friends and The West Wing on repeat, root for rival college sports teams, and make each other laugh each and every day. We’re putting together a small-town wedding with a big personality and a classically modern (or modernly classic?) look for 250 of our closest family and friends. It’s been 8+ years in the making, and sometimes I still can’t believe I’m finally getting to marry my high school sweetheart!
About Mrs. Snow Cone

Faux Glow

July 25th, 2011 @ 12:16 pm by Mrs. Snow Cone

Let me break it down for you. My heritage consists of the following: Irish, German, Swedish, Dutch, and English. This means that I have five kinds of pale skin tones all blending together to form a super-pale experience that is often unparalleled. Tanning isn’t really in my skill set; if I’m lucky, a week at the beach involves two things: the avoidance of a painful burn, and enough minor and brief sun exposure to result in a subtle pink that could maybe pass for brown(ish). Despite my genetic predisposition to paleness, I still enjoy a hint of color on my skin. Because of my genetic predisposition to paleness, I’ve never set foot in a tanning bed and never plan to. As a result, my options for getting a sun-kissed look are pretty limited.

During high school, I tried Mystic Tan for proms and formals, and I was always pleased with the result. Minus the day of gunkiness immediately after getting sprayed, it got passing marks in my book. Relatively inexpensive, relatively long-lasting, and relatively stress- and complaint-free. As long as you follow the instructions, that is..

Here’s a picture of the end result at my brother’s wedding:

And here’s a photo of me in January, without any tan, for comparison:

Even though I had nothing but pleasant experiences with Mystic Tan, I’ve decided that I won’t be going that route for the wedding. I don’t like the idea of having an entire day so close to the wedding taken up by me being grungy, waiting for the color to deepen. I don’t like the idea of raising my arms to hug someone or dance and having a starkly white armpit, since that area doesn’t get touched by the tanning goodness. I’m not in love with the scent that kind of lingers on you for days. Finally, and most importantly, I couldn’t find enough solid evidence that the color wouldn’t rub off on my wedding dress. I’ve never had color rubbing issues in the past, but at the same time, I’m not willing to take my chances on that for W-day.

Since tanning beds are out, and spray tans are out, what does that leave me?

I’ve used Jergens in the past, and I’ve always, always, always loved it. In my opinion, it gives you all of the benefits of a spray tan, minus the swift application and almost instant color change, but without the majority of the drawbacks. It’s inexpensive (under $10 a bottle), it’s easy to apply, you’re in full control of how much to apply and how frequently, and I think there’s a much fainter odor associated with this lotion. I really like that you can apply it for a few days, see how it looks, and then tweak your application technique in any way you see fit. I applied it twice last week, and I can already see a difference! My plan is to apply it a few times a week up until the wedding to get a subtle and natural-looking tint.

What are your favorite self-tanning products? Any faux glow tips from your own wedding experience?

Have you looked into airbrush tanning? Similar to mystic, except a technician custom mixes the color and sprays you. If you’re shy, you can keep your underwear on, or go au natural for no lines. I usually go in the evening, so you can sleep during the “grimy” part, then just wake up and shower it off. They also usually get your underarms!

I went with technician-applied spray tanning for my wedding day. Having an actual person airbrush it on produced worry-free results, though I can understand how some may not be comfortable assuming the poses in front of another person instead of a machine. You’re right about the rubbing, though. By the end of the night my dress had brown stains from sweating and rubbing the tan off, though fortunately there was no staining until dancing was well underway at the reception. I still need to take it in to get it cleaned…. hopefully it’ll come out!
Good luck with the lotions! I’ve never tried them, so I can’t offer any insight.

My friend uses this http://www.bareescentuals.com/Faux-Tan-Sunless-Tanner/26399,default,pd.html?start=6&cgid=BE and her tan is amazing. She works for BE and says mixing it with any kind of lotion makes it go on smoother for a streak-free tan. She has started other people using it and they look just as amazing. You should give it a try. Oh and we went to a theme park where it was very hot and it didn’t run at all when we were sweating.

I’ve done mystic tan and the airbrush…I’d have to day that airbrush is better, but if you want to go the DIY route I’ve found one I love!
Bare Escentuals “Bronzed & Buff” 2-pc. Faux Tan& Buffing Brush - you can see the color as you apply it so you dont get streaks or miss places…the brush is wonderful! It’s about $50 for the set but will last you a very long time.

I’ve never done Mystic, but have had a tech airbrush me. Love the results, but the funky smell and that you can’t shower or sweat for 8 hours is not so fun :/ Maybe I’ll try the BE, or Clairns gave me a sample of their faux tanner. I’ll let you know how that goes!

I love that episode of Friends, but it has scared me away from spray tanning forever (tv=reality). I’ve used the Jergens before with good success, but I’m never good at remembering to apply it.

Thanks for the recommendation, Snow Cone! I’ve been looking for something exactly like this since I’m the whitest one in my family. Like you, I didn’t want a spray tan, so I’m going to check this out!

I used to be that girl that avoided the sun like the plague…. my skin is WHITE! Memories of itchy stinging sunburns throughout my teen years had me thinking I just CANT tan. However, a few years back I started tanning in the tanning beds for short bursts of like 5 minutes every few days for a few weeks and slowly worked myself up to about 12 minutes. I don’t look tanned like some girls but I don’t want to, I don’t want to look fake. I just feel better, like my skin doesn’t reflect the sun anymore LOL. I feel like I have a much more healthy look to me. I don’t know if you’re completely against the tanning beds or not, but you might want to give it a try, not sure if you really have enough time now though? Also, the bottom half of my legs WILL NOT TAN NO MATTER WHAT! Its a running joke in our family, a few of us are like that. Because of that I do use the Jergens Natural Glow on my legs and do really like the results.

I use the same lotion because I, too, am Irish and English and have never had a hint of a tan in my life. I’ve been using it on and off the whole summer, and have been really pleased! What a good, natural idea!

I feel you!

I used Jergens awhile back and I am super pale. It didn’t give me the right color level I was looking for….granted I am so pale that it is hard for me to use self tanner and have it look right. I just recently tried the St. Tropez mouse with the glove. I loved the color with this! Not orange at all. No streaks. The best part is that you shower off the stuff several hours later (I usuallly leave it on for 6hrs) and this way it doesn’t stain my clothes at all. I just thought I would suggest something that worked for me!

Good luck!!!

I love the jergens natural glow! It’s really the only self tanning product I’ve ever used that doesn’t look totally fake. That is the route I am going.

Even though I have really dark hair, I am devoid of pigment. I swear I have to be part albino. I too am going sans any tanning help, but mostly because it always looks orange on me!

I just bought a tube of Natural Glow too, for the first time in like 10 years. I figure between now and October I can determine how much to apply for a lovely fauz glow. I just don’t trust anything else!

Thanks for this… I have been debating on what to do for our wedding I DO NOT tan. It attempt not to burn, then I still get burned, I peel (ew!) aaand repeat. I tried a tan bed and burned after 7 minutes. I can’t see doing the spray tan thing. I think I am the only person around now who doesn’t have a tan from the summer, but while at work the other day, a patron came in and complimented me saying I looked “natural”. I say tanning isn’t a rule! But natural glow seems to work the best for me too.

love love love the jergens and use it myself. i’m pale as all heck, too. i tried it first on one leg so i could do a side-by-side comparison and it really does a nice, natural looking tan even after just one application.and the smell is tolerable, just like you said, plus it’s just a better alternative to tanning beds because there is nothing sexy about skin cancer. jergens rocks!

I’m so glad you posted this Miss Snow Cone! I have actually been debating this very issue (I have similar skin issues as yours in the ghostly white department). I will now be trying Jergens, thanks!
