Miss Sweet Cream's Picture
Miss Sweet Cream, Philadelphia Age and Occupation: 26, Public Relations Account Manager Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Outside Sales Engagement Date: July 4, 2010 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church / Rosebank Winery About Me: Born in the ‘burbs of Philly, it took some time living in the Big Apple to realize that I’m a girl who likes her roots. That’s why the mister and I bought a 1950s house on a charming street not too far from our childhood stompin’ grounds. This could also be the reason why our hometown is the scene where we are planning our super sweet, totally charming, BBQ-for-supper wedding that I never knew I always wanted. I DIE over DIY projects and live for vintage, heartfelt inspiration. I obsess over all things mid-century (from forks to furniture). Love is… cartoons and flea markets, and I am known to whip up a mean banana cream pie. I met the Mr. in grade school and after that boy took me for a spin on the handle bars of his BMX, I knew that things would never be the same again. Besides lovin’ my Mr., I also love to plan, sew and create, and that’s just what I’m doing as I navigate through the details, creating a laid-back day that oozes charm; one that will go down in (at least our) history as the Best. Day. Of all time.
About Miss Sweet Cream

I’m sure that in days before bridal blogs like Weddingbee, brides had their ways about finding a perfect photographer or place to get their dress. They probably heard through the grapevine about a wonderful photographer or a fabulous baker. Either way I’m a chick who loves hearing about people’s experiences and advice whether to pull the trigger on a purchase or not.

I love seeing how many stars a movie gets before deciding if I should really spend all that dough to see it. Mr. Sweets completely embarrassed me (by accident) when he told the guy at Best Buy that I am totally set on buying a printer based on the stars. And restaurant reviews? Enough said.

But sometimes the reviews surprise me! After waiting to see a flick when it gets to DVD, sometimes I wish I would’ve seen it on the big screen. And there have been plenty of times that I just had to try Restaurant X because of rave reviews, only to be left disappointed and confused about what all the fuss was about.

That’s why I highly recommend a test drive. Even if it is a little pricey. Enter my makeup trial.

I decided that I will not pull a Princess Kate and DIY my makeup on the big day (despite my love of DIYing!). Although I am known to have an unbelievably steady hand with liquid liner and BM Sweet Cream loves when I do her up before a night on the town, I wanted to leave something like this to the professionals for a super important day like this.

I read tons of amazing things about Make Up Artist X. So even though she was a bit pricey and needed a certain minimum spent before booking her, I decided to give her a spin.

I dreamed of creamy smooth skin, dewy blush and heavy top and bottom lashes and booked a date with Make Up Artist X on the day of the engagement sesh and shared some inspiration pics with her beforehand.

So I came in to her like this…

And left like this…

And I wasn’t incredibly happy, to tell you the truth. Mr. Sweets was super confused because he thought I looked like a knock out. And I’m not saying it was horrible. It just wasn’t what I wanted. There was a smoky eye, eyelashes that reminded me of the Daisy Duck hat the you get in Disney World, and for so much of my hard-earned moolah, I didn’t really think it was worth it.

I feel like there were three choices: simple, medium, and loud—and I just got one of them. I mentioned my disappointment to Make Up Artist X and that I wanted thicker lashes (not necessarily longer) and I was told that I was just looking at it weird. Also, I don’t exactly have the skin of a porcelain doll and thought that maybe some makeup might make it close. I felt like my at home cover up job did better and was told that the airbrush gun was broken so I couldn’t see what they would do. I was super bummed about that last part.

And the real kicker is that I was overcharged by 10 bucks. I just knew that the trial cost less and when I questioned the price, I was told that I must be confused…only to later check my email to find out I was right, and overcharged!

So while I used some scissors on my too long lashes for the trial and did some touch ups myself with liners, mascaras and foundations, it all worked out in the end.

Mr. Sweets thinks that it was silly to pay money to try someone out, but I completely disagree. It’s worth it in the end to know that I don’t think that we have the same idea in mind. I’d rather pay now and not be disappointed on the big day.

So I’m on to plan B. My amazing hair guy does make up too, so I think that I’m gonna show him my inspiration pics someday soon and see what he comes up with. I would be surprised if he didn’t rock it out. Mama Sweets suggested to do it when everyone is at my house getting ready for the shower. I’m a little hesitant knowing the semi-stress I put myself under for the engagement sesh, but heck, I dodged that and it came out nicely in the end, so why not?

Bonus: To get my hair did, nails done, AND makeup done costs just as much as it would for my makeup with Make Up Artist X. And amazing hair guy does wonders.

Did you get surprised by an online review for better? Or for worse? Were you a little disappointed by any of your trials?

Although I think you look beautiful (with and without makeup), the attitude of Make Up Artist X is a huge turnoff. The whole purpose of a trial is to get on the same page, not to make excuses! Glad everything worked out in the end, though, with your hair guy. :)

I love your lashes, but if this wasn’t what you wanted, your makeup artist should have listened to you and made if right for you. Hopefully your makeup guy will be able to do awesome things for you!

I really enjoyed reading your blog. Being in the industry and running my own company that specializes in makeup artistry and now added hair stylists to the mix I love the feedback and the perspective you’ve given. One of the biggest things my business partner and I stress to all our artists/stylists is that they will take however long necessary and do the hair and makeup 16 times if need be to make sure the bride is doing backflips happy at the trial. It’s your big day and you should feel absolutely NO stress about your look that day. I’m sorry that your makeup artist didn’t do the same for you. You are totally right to find someone else if you weren’t thrilled with the look. You shouldn’t have to hear excuses about why it didn’t turn out the way you wanted. You deserve someone that will take the time to try other things that you are ultimately happy with.

In addition, I would forward him/her the email with the correct $ amount on it and request a $10 rfund just for the hassle of it all! :)

I tried out the airbrush for a special occasion makeover at Sephora and was not pleased with its coverage…if it makes you feel any better. I felt like my Smashbox routine (primer, concealer, foundation, powder, finishing powder) blew the airbrush out of the water in terms of covering blemishes and evening out my skin tone. I was under the impression (based on how it’s touted and considered an ‘extra) that it was a miracle worker. You look beautiful btw. I feel like they got the eyes and lips on, but seemed to miss giving you any contrast via color otherwise - pink cheeks and/or bronze contouring a la ms kardashian.

I do think you look very pretty and I’m sorry that you didn’t get that exact WOW factor that you were looking for but I can’t wait to see how your hair guy hooks you up.

Hope you were able to get your money back!

You look gorgeous! I understand your frustration with makeup artist X, I think her approach more than anything else soured the situation. I’m sure your fab hairstylist whom you have a relationship with will make you look even more gorgeous.

In response to the airbrush comment…it’s probably because they used an airbrush from Sephora which is the Temptu system. I’ve read numerous reviews on that airbrush system and none are that great. Our company researched airbrush machines and systems (with the makeup) for a long, long time before settling on Kett Cosmetics (out of NYC) which has worked absolute miracles on uneven skin texture (think pot-marks, scars, etc) and even more so covering tatoos and “fixing” suntan lines from bathing suits. Anyone contemplating doing airbrush should certainly give it a try but inquire which kind they use. We even have a waterproof makeup that we can use with ours that won’t move in NC high summer heat! It’s AMAZING!

I think you look smokin’! But you have to be happy and I’m glad you tested her out. I’d be upset over my $10 too! That is crazy and poor professionalism. I hope your hair guy rocks it out too!

Your makeup trial ended up better than mine! However, if you are not comfortable with it and the bad attitude of the makeup artist that is all that matters!

I was also very unhappy with my airbrush makeup trial and although my makeup artist was nice she certainly did not go out of her way to get the look I was aiming for or comfortable with. That’s the only good thing about a trial even though the money spent is ridiculous.

A bad trial (or at least one that didn’t meet my expectations) gave me the confidence to decide to do my own darn makeup. A lot of this “expert” stuff is overrated as I’m slowly realizing. Just because the industry standard may be that you must look so made-up and unnatural, doesn’t mean you need to do it because some expert says it’s necessary (and charges a premium for it!). (And by all means request your $10!)

Awww, bummer :/ For the record, I thought you looked hot! But there is no excuse for the MUA’s attitude. If you don’t like it, you don’t like it. She should want to fix it and make you happy and instead she lost a potential client.

Oh no! I’d be ticked. You definitely look great, but I completely understand about the look vs. cost dilemma. And then the fact that the airbrush was out?! They should’ve have given you a discount instead of overcharged you!

I would be so irritated! I think you look amazing but totally agree that her attitude is a major turn off. So glad to hear that you have a great plan B!
