Trials and Jubilations

July 26th, 2011 @ 2:47 pm by Mrs. Pony

This last weekend I had my hair and makeup trial, and even though I spent some time researching what I wanted, I was very nervous that my picks wouldn’t translate well with my hair and my coloring.

I stupidly didn’t get a before picture (you’re welcome), so you’ll just have to use your imaginations. I will say I looked like a hot mess (literally) because Papa Pony and I decided to go to garage sales in the several hours leading up to my late morning appointment. And the steam bath that was the heat wave last week was in full force, so yeah, I was looking good.

Despite putting my best face forward (ha), my makeup artist and hair stylist were able to come up with the following based on my inspiration pictures.

First up, the makeup (sorry for the crappy pictures, finding good lighting was hard and it was hot):

Trials and Jubilations : wedding bloomington makeup Img 816 IMG_816

And hair from all angles:

Trials and Jubilations : wedding bloomington makeup Img 81801 IMG_81801

Trials and Jubilations : wedding bloomington makeup Img 81901 IMG_81901

And after about eight hours of heat, humidity, and record high heat indices (of which I mostly spent in air conditioning), my makeup and hair looked like this:

Trials and Jubilations : wedding bloomington makeup 8311 8311

Trials and Jubilations : wedding bloomington makeup 8315 8315

Immediately after getting my makeup done, I felt a little weird. I decided to have the works done: airbrush foundation, individual false eyelashes, heavy eye makeup, eyeliner, etc. I never wear foundation, so the airbrush was perfect for me. It was light, but covered everything and it did not come off all day even though I touch my face often. Airbrush was about twice the cost of regular foundation, but I think it is well worth the cost to ensure I feel flawless on the big day. My only complaint (besides cost) is that it feels a little sticky at first. The sticky feeling eventually went away, and I was able to keep myself from messing with my face most of the day, but it’s something to consider if that type of thing bothers you.

There are a few makeup things I think I want to have done a little differently on the day of the wedding. For starters, I want my blush to be a more prominent. I’m not sure whether I need more blush or just less bronzer to make the blush pop against my skin more, but either way I want more color. Another thing I might change is the eyeliner. Normally, I love eyeliner on my bottom lashes, but I kept thinking it made me look too dark for our daytime wedding.

Finally, I’m on the fence about the lashes. I opted to have the individual lashes applied because my makeup artist said they would last a few days longer than a typical strip of lashes. During the application though, the adhesive kept getting into my eye causing it to burn terribly making my eye red and irritated for over an hour. Even after the pain of putting them on, I wasn’t sure I loved the look. I feel like they photograph great, but they felt extremely fake to me, which is not how I want to feel or look. Plus, the glue started to show by the end of the day, as you can see on my right eye in the second to last picture, which is distracting and unsightly. I’ve always want to try eyelash extensions, so this might be the perfect excuse to give them the old college try.

On the other hand, I loved how my hair turned out; it’s almost exactly what I envisioned. I say “almost” because the front of the style looks a little off to me. My stylist tried to give some movement and softness to the front of the style with a slight wave to the front pieces in order to avoid it looking too stiff and pulled back, but most of my hair was pinned at that point and couldn’t be properly restyled. I’m confident my stylist will be able to give me beautiful hair in the front and back on the day though, so I’m not worried about the look of my hair at all.

My hair was starting to fall out in a few places as you can kind of see in the picture above (self portrait shots of the back of your head are hard, yo), but was, for the most part, still intact. Which made complete sense after taking out the hundreds of bobby pins that were holding all my hair up. All in all, I decided my hair was a success.

What do you ladies think: is there anything I should change? Did you have a hair and/or makeup trial? Did it change your thoughts about your hair and/or makeup for the big day?

You look great! Maybe a little gloss for shine on the lips and a side swept bang in the front to give it a more youthful look…and you’re eyes look gorgeous!

I love how your hair turned out! I went through a couple of make up trials before getting exactly what I wanted. I think it’s great that you tested it out and will be able to make the changes like the lashes and the blush.

You look gorgeous! I’m not sure what to tell you about the fake lashes in general — if the individual ones burned and felt fake, then I’d say skip them, but I can’t guarantee the strip of false lashes would feel any more “real.” I guess you’d have to try them. If not, I think it’s either CoverGirl or Maybelline has a mascara called “Falsies” (it’s in a fuchsia tube) that I’m kind of in love with right now.

I love this look on you :) I think your makeup looks beautiful! I think that once you have a glass (or 2) of wine at your reception and dance that will make your cheeks rosy, so I personally think this is the perfect amount of blush. I really like the eyeliner on the bottom and I don’t think that it’s too heavy for a daytime wedding. I never wear eyeliner, so when I see it on myself I feel like I’m wearing too much, but I think your eyes really pop with the amount of eyeliner that you have on :) Overall, I would have to say that I wouldn’t change a thing with the hair or makeup, but it is up to you since it’s YOUR day :)

As a bride-to-be and a makeup artist- I have to say that I think your makeup application sounded very sub-par. Lashes should never be coming off by the end of the night or burning!! It’s never easy to predict the exact look a bride is going for, but sticky airbrush foundation and not enough blush sound like I’d be a wreck on my big day knowing we didn’t hit it out of the park on my trial! About the under-eyeliner: play around yourself with just doing it half way in on the bottom- it’s a great alternative to the full-on look and gives the illusion of a larger eye.

Your hair looked amazing! LOVE!

I would opt for something with more shine on the lips but other than that I think you look great! I’d keep the eyeliner. It may seem like overkill to you in the mirror, but it will definitely make your eyes pop in the photographs.

wow, i love it! maybe have them spray the hair more or something to keep it more in place on the big day? makes me nervous since you’ll probably be doing a lot of running around. i think your lashes look beautiful and that the lash extension procedure would be gorgeous - and you could enjoy it for several weeks!

you share a lot of same coloring/features as i (though I don’t have nearly your perfect complexion!), so don’t be creeped out, but i may steal your pics for my inspiration! they are the perfect balance between natural and dramatic.

Beeeeautiful! I do agree with adding some shine to your lips to make everything pop even more. I found myself requesting more blush after my make-up trial and I even went and got bangs a few days after my hair trial.

@kamiie: Yes on the gloss, hesitant about the bangs though, I’m not really a bang type of girl.
@Mrs. Elephant: I guess that’s why we have trials, to see what looks good. Hopefully this will help in the long run.
@Mrs. Hyena: I might just try that out for everyday wear, sounds good to me!
@Miss Kiddy: You’re probably right about the flushing from the wine, I definitely do that! I just really like blush :)
@jneden: @haelmai: Aw, thank you ladies!
@Jessica: Honestly, the makeup artist was having an off day (not excusing it, but I knew that was the case) and I’m not very good about vocalizing my concerns. The burning from the lashes was a little concerning, but she acted like it was normal, so I just went with it. Maybe it’s not?
@linguo42: I actually had gloss on that matched my lip color, but it wore off before I got home. I wasn’t 100% sure about the color so I didn’t buy the tube thinking I can find something on my own instead.
@maery1: Yes on the hairspray, although it stayed pretty curly through the next day. I don’t mind at all if you use the pics, hopefully they can help you out!
@Mrs. Bunting: You are brave woman. Brave.

Love, love it! Your hair is ultra romantic! I had individual lashes, and the glue definitely didn’t burn my eyes…so hopefully it was a consequence of your MUA having an off day? They look fab, but I totally understand your hesitation since they were painful to wear.

You look so pretty!! I never have luck with fake eyelashes, even though I’ve never had them done professionally, they always burn my eyes so I avoid them at all costs.

Oh so pretty!!! That hair is AMAZING! Dang. I’m glad to hear about the airbrush, I opted for this because 1. my skin is oil central 2. we live in Florida 3. I touch my face ALL. THE. TIME. You could do that little pushed up thing in the front of your style… um, I don’t know if you know what I’m talking about but like… as if you took bang-area hair, clipped it all the way back along the top of your head, then pushed forward.

Yeah, anyway, I’m sure you and your hairdresser can do a better job of this than me ;)

Your hair and makeup look gorgeous! The back of your hair is seriously to die for - so romantic looking! I’m also with you on the airbrushed foundation. I never wear foundation but had it airbrushed on for my wedding and thought it was perfect - you could hardly tell I was wearing makeup and it lasted forever. Definitely a good choice.

On the false eyelashes thing - if you’re not comfortable with them, I’d definitely skip them. I don’t think it’s worth the irritation to your eyes, especially when there are so many good mascaras out there that will give you gorgeous lashes. Everything else looks perfect though - can’t wait to see the final look!

Oooohhhh, pretty Pony :) I haven’t done my trials yet, but my profile pic is from a performance where I wore self-applied strip falsies and they photographed really well. It felt weird at first, and by the end of the night I had forgotten I had them on!

I love your hair! It is so pretty! Burning from the falsies doesn’t sound good, so maybe you need a different glue? My MUA used half a strip of these MAC lashes on me:

And I felt like they didn’t look over the top but that they really made my eyes pop. By the end of the day, both from my trial and on the big day, those puppies were still stuck on there until I washed my face.

Good luck!

You look absolutely stunning. I do agree with the things you want to fix though. Definitely have a little more “looseness” added to the front of your hairstyle, and I can see where you would want more color on your face. But still, you look GORGEOUS!
