Mrs. Magic, Chapel Hill, NC Age and Occupation: 30, Licensed Clinical Social Worker Fiance's Age and Occupation: 30, Researcher Engagement Date: December 1, 2009 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Barn at Valhalla About Me: I’m a tall drink of water (5’10”!) and a Southern bride with an enormous appetite for Mexican food, good deals, anything French, and all things wedding! By day I am lucky enough to work with individuals with autism and their families. By night, I’m even luckier to be able to spend time hanging out with awesome friends, crafting, shopping, thinking about exercising, and kicking it with Mr. Magic and our two cats. I tend to have sudden, intense cravings that will not be denied (seafood enchiladas! new jeans!) and I’m prone to being a disorganized mess of anxiety and stress. After waiting (and waiting!) to get engaged, I am finally planning the colorful, fun, fabulously awesome Fall wedding of our dreams. In an effort to share the fun and craziness that is wedding planning, I’m gonna blog about it for y’all---the good, the bad, and the pretty!
About Mrs. Magic

I just had one of the most bizarre experiences of my lifetime. I went to Men’s Wearhouse with Mr. Magic to pick out a tux.

OK, wait. Yes, we did the whole suit versus tux debate. I basically had no opinion, and just wanted to check it off my huge Post-It note wall list. Many of the guys in our bridal party did not have black suits, and Mr. M thought it would be cheaper to rent tuxes than buy suits. Maybe this isn’t wholly true, with all the suit deals around, but since Yours Truly (you know…me) would have to hunt down the sales, I was fine with renting tuxes.

In my new, slightly reckless and increasingly impulsive

“OMGwe’relessthan100daysawayjustpicksomethingandget’erdone”

attitude, we headed to Men’s Wearhouse to, well, “just pick something” and “get ’er done.”

We walked in and were given a glossy binder to flip through, with images of model-y men in tuxes and various, mostly hideous, ties and vests. As Mr. Magic flipped through and eliminated or complimented the looks, I repeated “They all look the same” and wondered “When do I get some food?” I was hungry. When we started off this adventure, I wanted a nice, healthy salad…by the end, I wanted Mexican food.

Mr. Magic was not sure what he wanted in a tux, other than something black, so we asked the salesman for some advice. “Do you have a tux that looks like a suit?” “What’s up with the vests—do you have to wear those?” “Why are the ties so short?” and finally, “What’s the most popular choice?” He pointed to four tuxes on half mannequins stuck to the wall, so I then asked “What is the difference between these four tuxes on half mannequins stuck to the wall here?”

And I was informed that, really, the main difference is the number of buttons. “This jacket has one button, this one two, this one three. This one, on the other hand, has four buttons.”

I think my head exploded in confusion and just sheer ridiculousness at the thought that the main difference in tuxes is the number of buttons. I mean, I love pretty buttons but could really care less about buttons on a tux. Begin rant: “Are you serious? We are choosing solely on the number of buttons??? Where is the variety? Where are the options? Why is this taking so long and making my brain hurt if the number of buttons are our sole consideration?”

I then suggested Mr. Magic go try a few of them on, and I was given a look by the salesman that insinuated that I had just grown a couple more heads. You see, they don’t actually have the tuxes there to be tried on. Well, they have one jacket in one size for some of the styles…

So I asked to see the vests and ties which are, of course, complementary but not totally matchy-matchy with each other. I also did not want to make the guys wear Sangria, the color of the bridesmaids’ dresses, so we were going with something more neutral. But when he brought the ties and vests out, there was only a half of a vest.

“Do you have a full vest somewhere, so I can at least mock up an outfit?” Uh, no. They don’t. I was told to go home and use their online tux builder. Which I did, begrudgingly.

So basically, we are choosing my future husband’s wedding day outfit by looking through a catalog, deciding how many buttons we prefer, and gazing at small snippets of fabric. He won’t try it on for the first time until a few days before the wedding. Is this normal? It seems completely whack to me.

Can you ladies imagine if this was how we chose our wedding dresses??? If we got to touch a small sample of fabric, and see a bit of detail of lace and tulle, and then see the entire dress on a model in a magazine? But no trying it on until a few days before the big day. How totally strange.

Also, what if there was only one style of dress, and your choice was between if you wanted strapless, scoop neck, halter, or one-shoulder…but everything else about the dress was the same. I mean, it’s preposterous to even think about!

This tux buying process may, in fact, be the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of.

Did you think buying tuxes was totally ridiculous? Did you take a stance like “Whatevs, just pick something already!”?

Dude.

TOTALLY do not get tux-renting.

Maybe we should have gone somewhere else, but I completely agree with you about Men’s Warehouse. It’s ridiculous that they don’t have anything for you to see or try on. And I kind of freaked out when FI told me they don’t get them until like 2 days before the wedding!! I said, “What if something is wrong?! How is that enough time to fix it?!” He’s not concerned. And they don’t have a plain, satin fuchsia vest and tie. They have this sort-of fuchsia, that’s a floral pattern with a STRIPED tie. The most hideous combo I’ve ever seen. Are you kidding me? Like, isn’t hot pink a pretty popular wedding color, if not a prom color? (They’re all the same, the tuxes.) And that tux builder doesn’t even HAVE my color on there, which makes me super nervous. I’m going to be checking in with them very soon to make sure they’re not going to screw this up!

Good luck!

OMG I get what your saying, we went to a local shop for my husband and they were happy to let him try something on, however it wasn’t the actual tux he ended up with. And we did learn the main difference between suits and tuxes is tuxes have satin accents, whereas suits don’t. Which I thought there was more to it lol.

I can’t believe they don’t let you try stuff on there! Gosh!

On the button issue, the reason for that is for fitting purposes. Some guys look ridiculous in a one button, because of his “figure” if you wanna call it that LOL! Take him somewhere, and have him try on a similar style suit as his tux, to make sure it looks right. I hate it when guys (especially a groom!) isn’t wearing a suit that does him justice. Find what looks perfect first.

i totally agree 100% with you, it’s ridiculous! Fortunately for us we looked online before walking in to MW. so my FI already knew what he wanted, after 10 minutes of filling in info and taking measurements we were done and out of the store. 10 minutes!! so not fair.

I thought it was kinda whack too! Mr. E tried on a suit jacket just to be sized, and then held up some fabrics to pick the vest color/pattern.

The thing about men’s clothing is that it’s all in the details, so when it comes down to it I’m voting for the guys to wear their own custom tailored suits.
Men’s Warehouse is kind of the standard, but personally unless everyone is a perfect off-the-rack size it usually doesn’t look that great. Plus I actually attended a wedding where the groom and best man were wearing each other’s rented tuxes and there is about a 6″ height difference between them.

My favorite wedding card had a cartoon of a bride and groom at the alter and the officiant had a speech bubble that said “Do you Mr. Rented Tuxedo, take you, Ms. Most Expensive Dress of Your Life…”

SO TRUE!!

Most guys don’t care about what they put on… they just care about how quick they can take it off, lol.

I felt the same way - when can we eat? when can we leave? Mr. Hot Tea wears suits every day for work and is suuuuuuper picky. This must be what it’s like when he comes shopping with me :)

I thought it was odd that we couldn’t try anything on in-store, either. And, their faces when we asked about three-piece suits! You would have thought we told them the sky was yellow. I like the silvery-grey/black combo you chose!

Ugh this post just reminded me why I am going to continue to put this off. Especially because the damn groomsmen are scattered all over the country. So annoying.

Thankfully my man knows exactly what type of suit he wants, but he’s letting me pick the color and I cannot believe how difficult it is to get the right shade of chocolate brown! I mean it is ridiculous!!! I just want a nice rich chocolate-colored suit… is that so much to ask??? Apparently because every time he finds a suit he likes the colors are awful and every I find the right color he hates the type of suit… so yeah, it’s become quite a production…

We are in the Uk but when we went into the store my FI tried on loads! He decided which one he wanted and they took all his measurements and kept trying on until he was happy..dif colour waistcoats, shoes etc etc. They did the same when we took one of the groomsmen in.
If i was you Id go somewhere else where you can try on just to see which he prefers on him :)

I had the same response. I was exceptionally puzzled by the whole “shopping” process.

So funny… When we started this process, my FI told me he liked tuxes (having worn one to prom in high school, he remembers feeling like he looked good)…. I, on the other hand, do NOT like tuxes… We settled on purchasing suits, FI got a 3-piece and the GM got the same suit, but without the jacket… A couple months later, FI had to go try on a tux for a wedding he was in… he sent me a picture of the pants (satin stripe down the side) telling me how gross the stripe was… I was like THAT is what makes it a tux… why did you tell me you liked tuxes? He had no idea :)

Oh boy, we’re going to Men’s Wearhouse tonight… thanks for the warning! :)

We’re on the fence between suits vs tuxes as well. At this point (less than 80 days, OMG) I think it’s just easier to decide on a tux option. FH wants to buy a suit, but he can do that anyways without causing the rest of the guys to do the same. Only one out of the 6 men (including dads) already has a black suit. I agree that this is a decision I want DONE. Oy.

I felt exactly the same way. It’s completely ridiculous that the guys can’t try on the full outfit. We really wanted to avoid MW but unfortunately all the other options were just way more money than we felt comfortable asking our groomsmen to spend (and we couldn’t cover it ourselves). Ugh. My frustration is compounded by the fact that at my FI’s cousin’s wedding last weekend, at least three of the groomsmen’s tuxes had some element that was the wrong size… Ladies, DEMAND that your FI and his groomsmen try on the tuxes at the store before leaving with them the day before the wedding — at least then the store should be able to fix any issues!!
