Drooling Over Wedding Dresses

July 27th, 2011 @ 9:45 am by Mrs. Honey

I kind of always thought I would be overly eager to try on wedding dresses. The truth? It took me eight, yes eight, months to step into a bridal shop. Why? I have no idea. Perhaps the long engagement? Maybe the cost? Could it be that we only have one bridal store in good ol’ Durango? I’d say it’s a combo of all three. BUT just because I didn’t physically meet some pretty dresses for eight months, that certainly didn’t mean that I didn’t ogle many of them online.

I did sign up for The Knot the day after getting engaged. My other immediate email subscription? David’s Bridal. So beginning the very first full day of being engaged, I was receiving daily emails from these two websites and obvs they are filled to the brim with wedding-dress pictures. I found it far too intimidating to just casually browse the web for pictures, and I found The Knot to be very sufficient in showing me pictures of thousands of dresses all at one site. I’m ridiculously intimated by designer gowns and their prices, and therefore looking at the fancy schmancy names of wedding designers sent me with my tail between my legs. After a few months of browsing, I just wasn’t too concerned with what I would wear. I felt so un-bridal.

But on the other hand, I knew I would find A dress and I knew that I would fall in love with something. Plus, just looking at the pictures on a monitor is a bit overwhelming. I mentally told myself (read: told my mom) that I was only interested in attending a David’s Bridal, and that I didn’t need to spend lots of moolah on a dress for one day. They have dresses for $99 that are perfectly beautiful! The problem was that the nearest David’s Bridal is just over three hours away. I still managed to save a handful of images in my inspiration folder, and here’s what my browsing provided me:

Pick up on a very noticeable trend in my inspiration pictures? I clearly liked structure and detailing on the bottom of my dress. I was drawn to strapless, non-ball gown, non-beaded type dresses. I liked something that made a statement, but that was also simplistic, with some sort of dramatic element. I feel like I had a good idea of what I envisioned myself in—it was just a matter of getting out of Durango and to a bridal salon to actually try them on.

So, bees, who else had a nonchalant approach to trying on dresses?

I did! I had some of the exact same inspiration dresses as you. And the MOMENT I saw my dress I knew I was done shopping. Once I put it on everyone else I was done too. :)

All of those dresses are beautiful. I live in Albuquerque (visit durango often, LOVE IT THERE) ! I was pretty nonchalant when finding my dress. I think it took me about 4 months to start looking and I hit up Davids first. I was pretty casual about finding one, I took the Ill let the perfect dress find me approach. I found my dress after going to davids 3 times I decided to try Alfred Angelo, and thats where I found the one.

Those dresses are so beautiful - mine looks a TON like the last one. I waited months and months before trying on dresses in person, as well, and even then I was “meh” about everything except my dress.

Not that I was overly eager to go dress shopping, I ended up finding my dress at a consignment wedding dress sale about three weeks after getting engaged due to the timing of the sale. I found a beautiful lace dress for $250 that needed a little TLC and some alterations. When everything’s said and done, it’ll cost me about $500, including the veil. It’s vintage, unique and lovely! I’m hoping that I can have my mom’s wedding dress altered to wear to my rehearsal dinner.

Beautiful!!

We have a long engagement and I waited about 9 months before I started trying dresses on. I was really afraid that I was going to buy something and then find something even better 6 months later and regret my choice. I’m glad I waited!!

I took a break after trying on dresses for the first time 5 months after we got engaged, but it really helped me solidify what I wanted for my dress. I love your inspiration, especially the Allure 8808. Can’t wait to see what you chose!

I too thought I would be eager to try on wedding dresses. I watched every episode of “Say Yes to the Dress”and could not wait for my day to go into the bridal shop. I imagined trying on at least fifty dresses with my all my bridesmaids watching. But after I got engaged my sister and I visited four bridal shops and I quickly realized which silhouette worked for my body. After that day I did not want a a lot of opinions about what dress I should wear. I thought this should be a decision I should make on my own based on how the dress made me feel. In the end I bought a sample dress from a picture that I never tried on. I just knew would would work for me.

I was less nonchalant, but in the end, I was drawn to similar styles. I love Allure 8808 with its horizontal lace pattern. Very similar to my own Pronovias that had a striped lace pattern instead of layered lace. Good luck with your search!

I too was intimidated by the high prices of the bridal salons and I felt like until I had my venue booked, I couldn’t buy a dress! It took me 7 months of engagment before I finally went looking. And, of course, I feel in love with a Maggie Sottero dress… so, off to the weddingbee! I found a fellow bee selling her dress, the right size and color! She drove an hour north, I drove an hour south, we hijacked a Macy’s dressing room and poof! I have a dress for 1/3 (1/4?) the price it would have cost from the designer!

I wish you the same luck in your search :)

Ugh, I started trying on dresses with urging from my mom right after getting engaged. I made the mistake of going into the only bridal salon in our small town. For some unknown reason, they only had designer sizes…all for size 2 and 6 foot tall women. That I am not. (I’m a 10/12, 5′3″) It’s hard to feel beautiful and confident in picking out your dress when it’s only half on you. It really put me off shopping for awhile. And then there were the high prices. BUt we can still look! BTW, I am in love with your Allure dress!

I totally feel the same about dress shopping - my mom and aunt and I went to David’s and just tried on a ton of different styles, cuts, etc until we figured out what we liked.
