Invitations Made me Insane

July 28th, 2011 @ 8:43 am by Mrs. Honey

Hive, I’m not kidding—designing my invitations is driving me caraaaazy! I have invitation ADD, and I have an addiction to looking at invitations; it makes for a very bad combination. Just when I think I finally found something I just have to have, along comes something else I have to have a little bit more. I’m designing my invitations, all my paper rather, by myself…with the most basic processing platform: Microsoft Word. Don’t get me wrong—I’m enjoying it. I just wish I had the funds to purchase Adobe Illustrator to make it a tad easier. Here’s my all-over-the-place train of thought.

It started with a simple font and simple hearts:

I was fixated on the heart invite for a few months, and I love that Mrs. Lox went with this awesome design. Then I started migrating toward tree or nature inspired invites.

“Lovebirds in a tree” invite:

Willow tree invite:

I sat with a blank document forrrever and tried to figure out how I could recreate something like this, but everything I did just looked like clip art. I altered my search and came across the image below, which convinced me I needed banners and white font.

Oh, pretty banners:

Banner with chevron stripes:

The colored paper and white typing make the statement in this suite, courtesy of Mrs. Pain au Chocolat:

Solid color with white text:

Next came the brackets:

So, to summarize, I like hearts, trees, banners, chevrons, brackets, color, and white text. Sweet, Honey, way to be all over the place. Looking at the images I have saved and comparing them to the ones I have recreated, I’ve learned this:

  • I love letterpress.
  • I like dark backgrounds with white text.
  • I’m drawn to non-computer-generated images.
  • I like having something to use on all paper elements (bracket, banner, etc.).

And you know what outlining this tells me? I have a challenge ahead of me. I can’t afford letterpress. My home printer doesn’t allow for white-text printing. And, I’m no artist; all my abilities lie in the computer arena. I’m screwed, y’all.

I’m going to walk away and:

Hive, who else had invitation scatterbrain while searching for inspiration?!

It took my FI and I FOREVER to decide on invites, so I feel you! We went back and forth and bcak and forth on different designs - he liked things in damask, and fancy fonts whereas I liked invites that were more modern and funky and looked like concert posters. (Go figure that he would be the fancy one!) Anyway, if it wasn’t for a design we both fell in love with on vistaprint, we’d probably still be arguing!

If you decide Word is too much of a hassle, you can download a trial version if InDesign (http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=indesign). We did that for work when we were trying out the software. I think it lasts for 15 or 30 days (can’t remember). Good luck with your invites!

I’m doing my own too!!! And struggling. Especially since the wedding is in nov and my computer harddrive failed and I am waiting on the replacement :( I did my own std’s (in my gallery) buttttt just a suggestion-you can download a free 30 day trial of illustrator. I did mine in Photoshop trial. Good luck girl love reading your blogs!!!

You may not be able to print white on colored paper, but you CAN print the colored background and leave the text the white of the paper. I’m pretty sure that’s what the majority of these are. The only potential problem is that you really need a printer with great ink coverage, like an inkjet, so that the background color is flat and consistent on the entire card.

Another thing you could do if you don’t think you can figure out a fancy software and design your invites within the trail period is Microsoft Publish (if you have it that is) I don’t know what version of office you have mine came with it.

Other option is GIMP…. it’s a free open source photoshop like program. It’s a little tough to get used to, but since it’s free and there isn’t a trail that expires, you’ll have plenty of time to figure it out.

I did super quick mock-ups of things in Microsoft Publisher and then when I had my final idea, I started toying around with GIMP

I have a suggestion and would love to help you with this if you’d like (as long as I can keep credit for this in my portfolio).

How do you feel about a willow tree made of hearts with a banner along the bottom and chevron stripes along the bottom to mimic ground? The color would be printed, however, there would be no letterpress possible.

I have CorelDRAW and would be able to create you a vector image so it could be enlarged or shrunk to your liking without becoming pixelated.

Comment back if you’re interested!

Same for you other ladies =)

Having zero design skills, ‘designing’ (I use that term loosely) our invitations was a pain! I kept things simple, which helped a lot. Good luck on yours!

You have a lot of lovely inspiration maybe take a break for a few days and revisit? And like Mrs Bunting said, reversed out text is totally doable, you’ll just burn through a lot of ink cartridges.

If you are really into the dark background and white text, it is totally possible. It will just eat through lots of cartridges as others have said.

I had just (barely just) enough knowledge of Illustrator to design our invitations. It’s actually semi-inspired by that tree invitation. As for printing, we are really really lucky to have a friend that is a letterpress artist so we were able to have letterpress at cost. Thank god because otherwise it would have been on my handy dandy laser printer and that would have driven me insane.

@discgirl & @Melissa.erin & @kristine.kraft: thank you SO much for the suggestions, ladies! I think I will have to try one of the trials!

@Mrs. Bunting & @Miss Macarons: I figured I could print all color with white text, but like you girls said, that is a ton of ink!

I’m sure everything will come together beautifully! It definitely helped to step away from all the inspiration for a little while once my folders started brimming over.

Hi, I designed my invites (may change the design as I have lots of time yet) which inspired me to make invites for other brides.
I do have photoshop elements now but if you wanted something similar you could download PAINT.NET for free, which I used at first. It is really easy to use and you can to alot more than you can in word, it may help you in your quest for the perfect invite design :)

Oh and also…My home comp doesnt allow for white text printing so I printed my background colour onto white paper and the printer simply didnt print the colour where the word are which then looks like white printed on coloured card. Hope you follwed that!

Inkscape (http://inkscape.org/) is a vector-based freeware program similar to illustrator. I used it for our invites and it worked really well for me.

I love all those invites! But I have no design skills. I mean, I can arrange text boxes and maybe one picture on a page decently enough, but not to my level of perfection required from our invites. Lacking funds, we meekly asked a designer friend to help. She did a great job! The end. But I feel you. I’m still addicted to invites, and with ours all signed and sealed, it’s painful to look at other peoples’ and go OH! So pretty.

Love all your inspirations :) I have no design skills, so I bought mine from Papyrus and will jazz them up with DIY pocketfolds…. Good luck * HUGS *
