About Mrs. Balloons

Keep on Keepin’ On

July 29th, 2011 @ 3:28 pm by Mrs. Balloons

I cannot believe that in less than a week, the Balloons will be Colorado bound! In the meantime, our household is filled with last minute projects and errands (including finishing my dress alterations—cue freak out!).

I’ve been meaning to show you another DIY project that I did, but I haven’t been able to find the image credit to my original inspiration picture that inspired me to create it…so I guess I’ll just have to show you without it. It was a rustic yet elegant moss covered oval vase with a pretty ribbon and monogram wraparound detail.

First I picked up some moss from Hobby Lobby.

I decided to go with a moss product called Moss Cloth because it came in sheet form & seemed like it would be the easiest to work with for covering a container.

Then I needed a container that I didn’t mind being covered with moss. Searching around the house, I found an old basket that I never use. Even though I can’t show you the original inspiration picture, the basket was the perfect comparable size & shape.

I had Mr. B hold the basket and hot glue sections, while I smoothed and pressed the moss. You’ll want to make sure to use the hot glue sparingly, as large hot globs of the glue will burn through the moss. Here’s Mr. B fixing a hole…

I then took some leftover ribbon and hot glued it around the container. For the monogram, I used the leftover business cards that we used for our invitations.

With some fake flowers to get the idea of what real flowers will look like in it.

When it’s time to put real flowers in, I’m either going to use short vases to place inside or I’ll put in some wet floral foam. The other option would be to just put in some soil & transplant some flowers in.

Anyone have experience in putting real flowers in a container like this? If so, what have you found to be the best route for putting them in?

I was just thinking that if you plant in the basket it self you will probably want to use a plastic liner because other wist the glue will probably detach when you water the plant

The best route would be floral foam. Just plain soil will start seeping through the container!

LOVE, so cute!!!! I agree with becauseilovehim - definitely use a plastic liner (you can even use a heavyduty giant ziplock) and then put floral foam inside that you’ve soaked for an hour or two (depending on the size - the package also usually has instructions). If you put in hydrangeas, I’d also put an individual plastic water vial on each stem, as those suckers LOVE water, it’s ridiculous (we learned this at my sister’s wedding, when we just stuck them in foam and the poor things were wilting halfway through!)
