Mrs. Parasol's Picture
Mrs. Parasol, San Ramon, California Age and Occupation: 25, Non-profit writer, editor, and blogger Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Law school student Engagement Date: December 19th, 2010 Wedding Date: September 2011 Venue: Bent Creek Winery (Livermore, California); Reception: Family Residence (San Ramon, California) About Me: I am a California girl at heart. I love the outdoors, sunny days at the beach, and hiking in the woods and mountains. I also love good books and am fresh from completing my Master's degree in English and Comparative Literature in New York City. Living in NYC was an amazing experience, and while I'm glad to be back on the West Coast, I'm also thankful that my two years back East gave me an opportunity to explore new places, make new friends, and indulge my passion for Broadway shows. Oh, and I received a pretty awesome proposal from Mr. Parasol in Central Park. Above all else, Mr. Parasol is my biggest cheerleader and my best friend. But even though I'm thrilled to be marrying him, I wasn't always totally on board with this whole wedding thing and at first, I wanted to run off and elope. I've finally been convinced to throw the wedding I never thought I wanted, and so now I'm busy planning an intimate September wedding filled with DIY details. Along the way, I'm slowly learning to appreciate, perhaps even love the wedding planning process.
About Mrs. Parasol

When it comes to wedding decorations, it’s usually those little details that really bring your wedding day vision to life. These little details can often be overwhelming because there’s simply so much to think about (or maybe it’s just me). But two very specific details have been at the top of my “must-have” list for a very long time, and I know that my wedding day won’t be complete without them.

So what are these details? Mason jars and striped straws.

These pictures make me drool! I wish I had been invited to these weddings because they look like so fun! To me, these pictures scream “rustic,” “fun,” “vintage,” “antiquated,” “whimsical,” and “romantic;” all buzzwords I want to have associated with our wedding. Maybe it seems silly to think about what type of devices I want our guests to use when sipping their pink lemonade. But as I said, it’s these little details that will help to make a wedding special, unique, and a lot of fun. And I mean, really, who wouldn’t want to drink their refreshment from a mason jar and striped straw? That’s so much more fun than regular cups.

I’m still on the hunt for perfect and affordable mason jars (suggestions welcome!), but look what arrived in the mail yesterday:

I am head over heels for these delightful straws! They are just too darling! And they’re also biodegradable, so they’re completely eco-friendly. I got them on Amazon for only $10.99—talk about affordable! I’m excited to get the mason jars so I can finally put these two details together and start to visualize what exactly they will look like at our wedding reception. I have a feeling they’re going to be a hit!

What wedding day details are on your “must-have” list?

I don’t know if you have a local store, but Ace Hardware has mason jars! The best price I have found because you can buy them online and have them shipped FREEEEEE to your local store. Most other places I found kill you on shipping. I love this wedding theme!

I got all of my mason jars at Walmart, they have their own brand (Mainstays) of them at like 6.50/ box of 12. This is the cheapest I have found locally so that I didnt have to ship them and pay and arm and a leg. I love the straws!

I love the mason jar theme! I think that top picture of the jars with name tags would make a great favor- kill two birds with one stone!

Any country supply store carries them. I got 12 for $7, I think. It seemed impossible to track down the ones with handles, unfortunately! Hope our guests don’t mind!

I bought those same straws on Amazon after a tip from another bee, only I was a cheapo and got the red ones for $4.99, two boxes, 288 for just over $10!! They should arrive Monday

I like the idea of the Ace Hardware store.

So cute! I’d love to have both of these at our wedding but didn’t feel like messing with tracking down that many mason jars and then turning around and having to try and sell them afterwards. I did want to make sure to get some chalkboards for signage and I found some awesome ones at the flea market!

Pottery barn has mason jars w/ handles which are adorable! Might be too much $$ wise for you but they are worth checking out :) Good luck!

I never tire of the mason jar + striped straw combo. I *really* wanted to incorporate aqua jars into our wedding somehow, but never got around to finding some!

I bought the black and white striped paper straws (I absolutely LOVE them!). I got my jars at WalMart BUT I just saw them last night at my local Dollar Tree so I may return the WalMart ones and get the Dollar Tree ones instead. 12 for 7.00 bucks. I got tags from Michaels that I am going to tie to the jar rim with hemp string and put a sharpie at the table so guests can write their name on their glass. We are putting glass pop bottles in galvanized tubs but I get that sum folks may want not want to drink from a bottle hence the mason jars! I saw same pics you posted which is why I did it too!

Mason Jars are adorable! We will be using them here and there on our day but I couldn’t find any colored jars that are within budget… until I found this site! did I mention that the jar labeling idea is GENIUS!?!

Obviously I will not be coloring the jars that guests will drink out of but I am thinking that the decorative jars/vases should be. Cannot wait to try this out!

Thanks for all the great suggestions for places to find affordable mason jars! I so appreciate them all. :) I’ve actually been lucky enough to find quite a few at thrift stores (which means I haven’t paid over 49 cents for one jar!), but I’ll definitely need a lot more to round out my collection.

I bought all my mason jars at Big Lots ($7.25/dz) and at Smart n Final (7.50/dz). I’m using them for glasses and my guests will take them home as their favors!

The straws are absolutely charming! And I am glad I read all of the comments too. There is a lot of great advice from everyone on places to look for mason jars. I’ve been on the search myself.

Has anyone tested these straws to see how well they hold up? The only paper straw I have ever used have not faired great. But these are so adorable I hope they are working out well :)
