Shopping for Churches

August 1st, 2011 @ 3:27 pm by Mrs. Funnel Cake

As soon as we were engaged, it was pretty much decided what church we would marry in. Still, I wanted to contemplate the decision to make sure I was really happy with our location, so let’s go on a church tour in Columbus!

First up, the Big Daddy: St. Joseph Cathedral

In my eyes, the downtown cathedral is probably the most grand Catholic church in Columbus that one could choose. It’s pretty fancy. I mean, the Bishop’s seat is there and all. But it’s also pretty pricey. Mr. Funnel Cake and I couldn’t really justify the $1750 price tag if we can’t even fill 1/8 of the cathedral. It was just too much church for us.

St. Francis of Assisi

In the 1980s, my parents bought a duplex in Victorian village so my Grandma could move down from Cleveland. She lived in the duplex for several years before my parents moved her even closer, and while she lived there St. Francis was the church that she went to every Sunday for mass. My sister and I actually lived in the same duplex while attending The Ohio State University and we would sometimes attend St. Francis masses as well. Part of me thought it would be really sweet to have the ceremony in my Grandma’s cozy little church, but then I could already see my mother complaining about how parking is difficult in that area.

St. Charles Preparatory School, Mother of Mercy Chapel

St. Charles Chapel is available to all graduates of St. Charles Preparatory School and it’s where my oldest brother was married. It’s a cute little chapel, but I’m not a boy so I wasn’t ever going to graduate from an all boys high school. Still, I could sigh and think about marrying in this forbidden church. Sigh with me bees— siiiiiiiigh.

Sacred Heart

In line with thinking about schools, I recalled Sacred Heart, the church of one of my childhood Catholic schools. I’ve attended a fair amount of services here during school so I thought maybe we could marry here and pretend it’s as special as the exclusive St. Charles Chapel. I think my mother would just think I was weird.

St Thomas More Newman Center

My parents actually got married at this church on campus so obviously it’s a little close to my heart for that reason, but after attending a few masses here during university, I really didn’t care for the atmosphere of Newman Center compared to other churches. You can also bet that parking around OSU campus would be a b!†¢#.

St. Christophers Church

And that brings us back to our original choice. My childhood parish and the current parish of my parents. We know the priest, know the community, are part of it, etc etc. It just makes sense! St. Chris may be plain and simple, but I’m really excited to share this amazing sacrament with Mr. Funnel Cake here! It’s also the only Columbus church Mr. Funnel Cake has ever been to, so that’s a big bonus.

And before y’all ask, I didn’t even ask my mother about any of the churches besides St. Chris. It was really a no brainer, but I’m glad I thought about other churches in Columbus to make sure there wasn’t somewhere else I’d rather share this moment with Mr. Funnel Cake!

Do you have any special ties to your ceremonial site?

I don’t personally have any special ties to the church i am getting married in , however i have always dreamed of getting married in a Cathedral. When we started planning our wedding , we decided to go with our city church because of the budget , but it just didn’t feel right to give up my dream . My fiance surprised me one day with a card letting me know that the dream shouldnt die ,and that we needed to talk to the deacon at our cathedral . We did and our date was available . We booked it and decided to cut somehwere else .

Here is a link to pictures of the cathedral .

Oh, jealous. As a nod to my future husband I turned Baptist and will be getting married in the chapel of our huge church (the sanctuary seats 4,000 and is pink, so that was a quick no). Of course, the chapel has 70s style architecture and wooden everything else, plus blue carpet, which doesn’t really gel with my fall color wedding. Le sigh. Oh, Baptists, God loves pretty churches too!

*Of course, I would have loved to be married in the chapel at the university where I went to law school, but when the wedding coordinator told me that the day the fall schedule was released, I’d need to be there “by 5 am, and we don’t permit camping out,” I was done.

St. Francis of Assisi is beautiful! I love that church and the neighborhood is obviously quite adorable. Sacred Heart - ehhh, been there, too, and the mass I went to there was only attended by 10 people! (It was Saturday evening during an OSU game, so I guess not too surprising.) Maybe because it was so empty, Sacred Heart seemed cavernous and eerie, and the atmosphere was rather depressing and scary- think fire and brimstone!

Good choice though on a church where you feel at home!

@ohhlala: Wow!! Your church looks amaaaazing! Getting some venue jealous now! ;)

@Lone Star: haha, yeah our church has pretty modern architecture and while St. Francis up there has much prettier architecture, Mr. FC actually likes the modern style of St. Chris. So it works. :P

@osugrad: hahaha ahh Sacred Heart IS pretty cavernous and dank. I didn’t think it’d be cozy for a mass. It’s always underloved it seems, no matter if there’s an OSU game or not. I used to love the 1-2″ minute homilies though!

@ohhlala:

I work at the History Center, in the shadow of the Cathedral and you are so lucky to be getting married there! I wish I had 600 guests, because I could never get married in the Basilica or the Cathedral because our 150 would make it seem so empty.

Pretty! Simple is nice, really…. our Church is nice from the outside (it looks a lot like the Riemann Theater in Nashville, same red with the white design and its super old) but the inside has deep red carpet (our wedding colours are purple and yellow) and there is THE hugest, larger than life, gory Jesus on the cross front and center. In every wedding photo Ive seen taken in that church thats all I notice, so our photographer has been given strict instructions for as many closeups and alternative angles as possible. I have nothing against Jesus, but ohhh boy is this statue BIG and well…. bloody :S. Its the only church in the area and is where my parents, both sets of grandparents, great-grandparents are back 4 generations were all married…. sigh

Loved to read your post about my beloved home of Ohio and also to see all the Catholic churches there :) We are getting married in the same church as Mr. Hot Tea’s parents, and his father and grandfather are buried in the cemetery next to the church.

Loved this post - it makes me feel really special because my honey and I will be getting married at St. Charles. I love how intimate it is and that we’ll look back and see a FULL house :)
