So, here’s the thing about Mr. S’ vows.
He spent hours drafting them and typing them out on his prized vintage typewriter. He took them very, very seriously and was really excited to read them at our wedding ceremony.
And then, as we were on the bus on the way from our hotel to the wedding venue, Mr. S suddenly looked at me with panic on his face. “Shit, hon,” he said, “I left my vows at the hotel.”
“Shit, hon” is right. Shit.
There was no time to go back and get them. I asked him if he could remember what he wrote and he said that he remembered the gist of it, and that he’d wing the rest. This made me a tiny bit nervous, because Mr. S is shy and doesn’t like to be the center of attention. I was worried that he’d get major stage fright. But he said that he just needed to take a few minutes to go over them in his head, and he was pretty sure he’d be alright.
So, when I last left you, I was singing the praises of our friend and officiant Todd. He gave an incredible speech and now it was our turn.
I took out the sweaty, wrinkled piece of paper on which I’d printed out my vows, and read:
And then, Mr. S took my hand, took a deep breath, and improvised.
And hive, he was incredible. My shy, awkward Mr. S spoke from the heart and had me laughing and the guests crying.
He was sincere and sweet, and it was the most confident I’d ever seen him. I fell in love with him about a bazillion times more while he was speaking.
You can tell that my bridesmaids are all thinking “Awwwww!”
Then we did the ring thing.
And then, Todd declared us husband and wife. We were married, y’all, and we sealed it with a big, wet sloppy kiss!
Our recessional song, You’re My Best Friend by Queen, began.
And, victoriously, we marched back up the aisle.
And then we started making out outside of the barn.
Immediately after ceremony, we were bombarded with guests telling us that it was the best wedding ceremony they’d ever seen. And that made me so proud, even though it had nothing to do with my fairly traditional vows and everything to do with Todd’s officiating and Mr. S’ vows. Everyone was so impressed with how funny and sweet my new husband was.
And, side note: I didn’t cry at all during our ceremony, although a lot of guests and even some members of the wedding party did. But after our Ithaca minimoon, Mr. S showed me his typewritten vows that he’d had in his bedside table drawer, and as I read them, I bawled. Like a baby. They were so incredibly beautiful.
Coming up next: we par-tay!
