About Mrs. Bacon

A Candle Conundrum

August 2nd, 2011 @ 4:21 pm by Mrs. Bacon

I’ve always envisioned the wedding as a candlelit dinner with really minimal floral decorations, but lately I’ve been wavering from that vision just a bit. I don’t suddenly want huge centerpieces, but I am worried that my candle-only approach is going to be boringtown.

A couple weeks ago we went to the wedding superstore, aka the local IKEA, and bought out their whole stash of candles, candle holders and big picture frames (along with a rug or two and a bed frame) to decorate the reception tables. We are going to end up with 16 rectangular tables pushed together to make eight long feasting tables with 18 people per table. That means we need LOTS of things to go on top of them.

We don’t pack light, but we do pack well!

Maybe it was all the hubbub from the possibility of being on TV or maybe it was the countdown letting me know that we are way under two months from the wedding, but suddenly my vision seemed really plain…and I realized I was in desperate need of a plan! Being the internet savvy lady I am, I searched the internets for non-flowery centerpiece options. I stumbled on a the bountiful-candle-laden-with-flowers-and-petals look that Mrs Lemon had at her wedding!

So I searched more, since the full-on flowers were likely going to be pricier than I was thinking, and I stumbled on three options all with the more cost effective rose petals!

Lushly scattered as a table runner

We’ll have really long tables, so traditional table runners are kind of out since they’d need to be 20 feet long, and that’s a lot of fabric to iron… So we’re down to lightly scattered, lushly scattered, or no petals at all. Clearly I don’t have the tablecloths we’re renting hanging around the house, so I did the next logical thing: I mocked up some examples in PowerPoint.

I really like the red on red because it gives texture and depth to the tables without overwhelming the bright tablecloths… but then I had a friend tell me that was out of the question because the shades of red might clash. So now I’m also considering white, but is it too contrasty? Does it feel a little too much like a Valentine’s Day dance? Then the other thing to consider is the cost—lush flower petals are half the price of the big centerpieces I’m avoiding so that I can make a donation. So now do I just do the lightly scattered petals to get some depth at an even lower price tag? But then at that point, should we even bother with them at all? Who will notice a few scattered red petals against a red tablecloth?

Ahh! Hive, I need some help. We’re 40 days from the wedding and the Baconator is about to be on wedding burnout.

What do you think?

I personally think that the lush white will give off a more romantic feel. I am a sucker for white flowers and white candles. Gorgeous!

I also love the lush white look, but the red on red also could be really beautiful as well! I would say buy a dozen roses and do a mini mock-up to see what you prefer and how it really looks in person!

I get that feeling of wedding inadequacy about once a day now and feel like I need to change something about our wedding decor or plans immediately to alleviate the worry, but I think your original plan sounds beautiful and cost effective. As long as you’ll be happy with it, go with the original plan and use the money on a massage :)

Are you looking to only use the colors red and white? If you had a third color, that might help get rid of the Valentine’s feel. For instance, black tablecloths with red rose petals and white candles would really pop. White tablecloths with lush red petals and white candles would look amazing as well. Changing the candle color would provide more options as well, but since you’ve already bought white it seems like it would be less stressful to incorporate other colors elsewhere. :)

The week before our wedding I had the exact same thought as our table decor was pretty minimalist. It ended up being gorgeous without adding anything to it. That being said, could you do both colors mixed together? Red is my favorite color so my first thought is “Red!” but mixing in white would take the edge off if the reds don’t match. Good luck!

I love the white and itll complement the glow of the candles! What about fake roses petals??? My FH used fake when he proposed and I literally had to pick a few up to tell they were fake. Plus, they wont wilt by the end of the night.

Whatever you decide, it sounds gorgeous!!

I vote for lush. I think lightly scattered rose petals like nice in close up pictures, but how does it look in person and far away pictures?

Not even joking, the EXACT same thing just happened to me. I was planning on lanterns with candles inside, surrounded by a few mason jars with candles. All of a sudden I decided to have a florist do some flowers in the lanterns instead. Much happier!

I had the exact same issue - lots and lots of candles and didn’t know what else to do with them. Luckily my mom has a beautiful old cedar tree so we trimmed that and added cedar branches in and among the candles! I’m not there in my recaps yet, but I loved the way it turned out!

I voted for lush white petals, I think it will look beautiful with the candles and not Valentine’s Dance-y at all (since there’s no pink!)

I’m biased because I’m using candles and rose petals! Is there a happy medium between lush and scattered to help you save some $$?

A friend just came over and looked at the mocks and suggested just to group the petals around the flowers. What do you think guys?

Why not do alternating table of lush white and then lush red? Or do a table or two of mixed petals? You could get the best of both worlds.

I like the contrast of something other than red on red. Have you thought of red and (almost) black rose petals? Like black magic roses…. that keeps the whole super luxe red on red look with giving some needed contrast

Do you mind doing a tutorial of how to do the tables in power point?

I ordered freeze dried flower petals from flyboynaturals.com and they are amazing!!! ALOT cheaper than real flower petals. You should definitely consider doing something like that!
