Mrs. Parasol, San Ramon, California Age and Occupation: 25, Non-profit writer, editor, and blogger Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Law school student Engagement Date: December 19th, 2010 Wedding Date: September 2011 Venue: Bent Creek Winery (Livermore, California); Reception: Family Residence (San Ramon, California) About Me: I am a California girl at heart. I love the outdoors, sunny days at the beach, and hiking in the woods and mountains. I also love good books and am fresh from completing my Master's degree in English and Comparative Literature in New York City. Living in NYC was an amazing experience, and while I'm glad to be back on the West Coast, I'm also thankful that my two years back East gave me an opportunity to explore new places, make new friends, and indulge my passion for Broadway shows. Oh, and I received a pretty awesome proposal from Mr. Parasol in Central Park. Above all else, Mr. Parasol is my biggest cheerleader and my best friend. But even though I'm thrilled to be marrying him, I wasn't always totally on board with this whole wedding thing and at first, I wanted to run off and elope. I've finally been convinced to throw the wedding I never thought I wanted, and so now I'm busy planning an intimate September wedding filled with DIY details. Along the way, I'm slowly learning to appreciate, perhaps even love the wedding planning process.

Wedding Signs: Take Two

August 2nd, 2011 @ 9:47 am by Mrs. Parasol

In case you don’t remember, a little while ago, I took my first crack at homemade wedding signs. Overall, I was really happy with this fairly easy and very affordable DIY project. But I wasn’t totally satisfied with how the actual writing turned out. I foolishly thought I could do it by hand with a Sharpie pen, and I didn’t really love the results. There was a certain charm to my purple script, but it wasn’t exactly what I was looking for. So it was back to the drawing board for me!

I was planning on trying out some tips that reader and artist Heidi sent my way, but before I could give her amazing suggestions a go, I found an awesome stencil at JoAnn Fabrics. No more practicing my penmanship over and over again—I could just stencil the letters onto my wooden signs for a much sharper and more rustic look. Perfect!

I am so pleased with how this turned out! I think this looks a million times better than my handwritten attempt, and using the stencil was actually a lot easier and less time consuming than writing the signage by hand. And I love the green paint so much more than the purple Sharpie—it’s a much better fit for our wedding vision.

I still want to touch up the edges of the letters a little bit, but other than that this wedding sign is pretty much done! Now our guests will know where to get a cool drink when they start to feel parched from all the dancing they’ll be doing at our wedding.

Here’s an updated cost breakdown:

  • Wooden board: $3.29
  • Spray paint: $3.99
  • Stencil: $4.99
  • Green paint: $0.99
  • Paintbrush: $0.29
  • Total cost: $13.55
  • Still not too bad at all, especially considering that I can use everything but the same wooden board to make the rest of my wedding signs. I can’t wait to see how the others turn out!

Are any of you making your own wedding signs? How are you tackling this project?

I love it. Doesn’t it just feel great when you finish a DIY. You feel a little more like Martha Stewart every time you finish one at least I do.

Wow, these came out great! I have to say I do like them a lot better than the sharpie ones. Totally worth it for just a few extra bucks.

I liked your other ones, but I agree that the larger letters make them far more guest friendly! So cute!

Ooh, I love the way the sign came out. I like the hand written one, but the new one is practically professional!

Hi looks awesome. Can I ask where you bought the wooden board?

    Thanks

@mjrogue: Thanks! I actually just got the wooden board at Michaels. They had a pretty wide selection of different sized boards, and although I probably could have found cheaper, I didn’t think the price was too expensive. Hope that helps!
