OK, so I don’t actually have a name for my engagement ring, but if it did have a name I’m certain it would be female, and Gladis just seemed fitting considering the history of my engagment ring.
Here are the Teaspoons looking very excited after we just got engaged!

Personal photo
Gladis and I first met about five year ago when I was first introduced to Mr. Teaspoon’s grandmother; she was wearing her wedding, engagement, and eternity ring on her left ring finger, and Gladis was there sitting pretty on her right hand. It is such a unique ring—I noticed it immediately but didn’t mention anything to anyone. Why would I?
Fast-forward four years, and our close friends announced their engagement, with the bride-to-be sporting her grandmother’s ring! I may or may not have casually mentioned that I wished that we had family stones or rings that we could have used as my engagement ring; that would make an already special piece of jewellery unbelievably special!
After mentioning this I noticed that Gladis had disappeared! The first time Mr. Teaspoon’s gran stepped out with a bare right hand I let it pass; it could be being repaired, cleaned, or anything! But the second, third time—then I mentioned it to Mr. Teaspoon. His response: “I think because of her carpal tunnel the rings hurt when she plays bowls.” Damn him and his good cover story!
His cover put that particular ring out of my mind for another six months until we were holidaying over the Christmas/New Year period and I found an unusual box in Mr. Teaspoon’s bag. With incredible restraint I managed to hold off on opening the box, because at first glance I thought it was his cufflinks, which come in similar sized boxes. It took me another two months when we were moving into our new house and I was unpacking everything until I found the box again! This time I was WAY more suspicious, and against my better judgement I opened it a crack and realised that there were actually two boxes! The inner box had the name of a jeweller!!! Would you believe me if I said that I quickly put the lid back on and didn’t react at all…? Yeah, I wouldn’t either…I was literally jumping off the walls! Lucky I was home alone and had enough time to calm down by the time Mr. Teaspoon arrived home!
A few months later, the night of our five-year anniversary, it was one of the rainiest days Sydney has experienced. The outside of our appartment was starting to flood, and my shoes and the majority of my pants were soaked by the time I got to the taxi. Nevertheless, we were booked in to go to my favourite restaurant, Cafe Sydney, which overlooks Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, and they have the most amazing tomato and buffalo mozzarella salad! We enjoyed a wonderful meal and talked a lot about how amazing the last five years had been and how we both couldn’t believe how lucky we were!
Then it was time to head home. We jumped on a ferry heading back to our place, and Mr. Teaspoon suddenly got very quiet. Little did I know he was planning to propose when we got off the ferry! We walked a little way up the headland and got to my favourite chair with the most amazing view, and he got down on his knee and asked me to marry him! In his hand was that cute little box, and there was Gladis!!!
Here is the beautiful location where Mr. Teaspoon proposed. We went back down there the next morning for a walk, and I snapped a quick picture.

And I know you all want to see Gladis, but first let me tell you a little about her! The centre stone was dated by our jeweller at around 1850, and Mr. Teaspoon’s nan had the setting that it is in designed in 1950. When she offered the ring to Mr. Teaspoon she thought that I would want to have it reset, but I love it exactly the way that it is!

Do you have a name for your engagement ring? Someone tell me I am not the only crazy one.
