Miss Sweet Cream's Picture
Miss Sweet Cream, Philadelphia Age and Occupation: 26, Public Relations Account Manager Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Outside Sales Engagement Date: July 4, 2010 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church / Rosebank Winery About Me: Born in the ‘burbs of Philly, it took some time living in the Big Apple to realize that I’m a girl who likes her roots. That’s why the mister and I bought a 1950s house on a charming street not too far from our childhood stompin’ grounds. This could also be the reason why our hometown is the scene where we are planning our super sweet, totally charming, BBQ-for-supper wedding that I never knew I always wanted. I DIE over DIY projects and live for vintage, heartfelt inspiration. I obsess over all things mid-century (from forks to furniture). Love is… cartoons and flea markets, and I am known to whip up a mean banana cream pie. I met the Mr. in grade school and after that boy took me for a spin on the handle bars of his BMX, I knew that things would never be the same again. Besides lovin’ my Mr., I also love to plan, sew and create, and that’s just what I’m doing as I navigate through the details, creating a laid-back day that oozes charm; one that will go down in (at least our) history as the Best. Day. Of all time.
About Miss Sweet Cream

Please Mr. Postman

August 2nd, 2011 @ 11:24 am by Miss Sweet Cream

Just as I get ready to share the final final versions of the invites that I teased you with, I just had to put something out there to make sure that I didn’t cross the super-crazy-yes-I-know-that-I’m-a-mad-psycho line in wedding planning.

As you will soon see, our invites wound up needing a bit more postage than the typical invite. This was A-OK by me and I kinda had a hunch this would happen. That’s why I took my first one to the post office to get weighed before buying any postage.

Now I realize that some things like stamps can send some brides into freak-out mode and others (count yourself one of the lucky ones) to not care so much.

I originally swooned over the whole idea of using vintage, non-canceled stamps.

That is something that I just KNEW had to be a part of our wedding plans. But as the wedding got closer I realized that there were many other things higher on the list of importance and that idea was scrapped, just like other really good (but not practical due to time or cost or probability) ideas had got axed before it.

So thank heavens, like many other brides gone before me, I discovered artist Jeanne Greco’s 18th century French playing card inspired  King & Queen stamps.

After some digging it turns out many a bee has mentioned these pretty little things before me, like Mrs. Bee, Miss Seal, Mrs. Scissors, Mrs. Hippo… the list goes on and on.

So I, like many before me, went to the post office and bought all the King & Queen stamps out… but sadly there wasn’t enough. I should’ve knew trouble was ahead when the nice lady at the post office couldn’t scan the stamps and needed to perform a whole mess of operations to allow me to take the home with me that day. “Strange,” she told me. “This never does anything like that.”

So you can imagine my surprise when just days later I went to another post office to hoard in on some more lovely little stamps and was told that they don’t have any.

“Hmmmm…” I thought to myself. “I’ll just call around to neighboring post offices.” But nobody had them. The bride in me began to let panic set in.

And then on the call to the third post office I was told the most horrifying news. The King & Queen stamps have been discontinued. The gentleman at this post office told me that they were all told to send them back…and even at that time, they didn’t even have any to do so. He told me to keep trying in hopes to find the office who might not have gotten word yet.

Just in case there is a reader or two whose heart is beginning to rapidly race, let me tell you the story ends “happily ever after.” After some freaking out and getting really really scared—over stamps. Yes. stamps—it turns out Mama & Papa Sweets’ post office had 40 left.

“Phew!” I thought. But then the crazy took over & since things couldn’t be left to chance, I called Papa Sweets from work and begged him to run and get them before some other bride who is short 40 King & Queen stamps snatches them from my grips.

“They are just stamps Sweet Cream,” Papa Sweets told me. That silly, silly man. Obviously he has never been a bride.

So, am I crazy for going a little insane about stamps that are just meant to get invites from our door to our guests? Did you too have a panic attack over silly stamps? Or did you not really care all that much?

What stamps adorned your invites?

NOTE: I later found out that you can still buy the stamps online at USPS.com. But I don’t know for how long. So if you love those stamps, don’t take them for granted.

I buy all of my stamps online. I hate the boring stamps, and felt like my post office never had fun ones. The shipping is only $1, no matter how many you order, and they usually arrive in under 3 days. I’m sorry you didn’t know about the store earlier, but hopefully other brides will learn about it this way!

Haha, I sent Mr. Cannon to find out how much postage we needed for our invites yesterday and to pick up stamps. We need .64 ones, so he just “got whatever they had” and we ended up with dolphin stamps. I actually find them to be pretty hilarious. I’m also secretly glad that he didn’t get the ones with wedding cake on them, because I find them to be kind of cheesy.

Oh my! Thank god for USPS.com. We needed to send more invites out after the initial launch so we went to our local post office, they had them in hand, and then said they wouldn’t sell them to us!! Thank goodness for the internet!!!

I actually mixed vintage stamps and current stamps to meet postage.

The USPS also has a really cute line called “Garden of Love.”

We ordered all of our stamps online. We used the wedding roses .44 forever stamps and some cute little herbs for .29 since ours also wound up costing more due to weight.

I am in the midst of doing vintage postage for our STDs. My coffee table is covered with little piles of stamps, and it takes way longer than I expected to stamp up an envelope to make them fit and look nice together. Some look really pretty, and some look kind of ridiculous. I hope my skills improve before we get to mailing the invitations, cause I’ve bought a whole lot of old stamps!

We did custom cherry blossom stamps w/ our wedding date on them from zazzle.com. It seemed that most of our guests really did notice and didn’t realize that custom postage existed. The only downside was that it has a bar code on it.

I went to usps.com and found a host of save the date, invite, thank you and other special pics postage for the same price as regular postage.

My stamps were a pain too. My postage was 64 cents and I actually wanted the cake stamp. I needed 200 stamps (big wedding) and the first post office I went to only had 120. The second post office I went to had nothing for 64 cents at all. They still had the old 61 cent cake stamp! Finally I got smart and called the third post office and they had the remaining 80 I needed. I’ve read stories on weddingbee about stamp hassles and thought no way that could happen to me, but sure enough it did!

I guess I’m lucky because I really didn’t care about stamps, except that I wanted to keep them the lowest amount possible :)

Oh no! I was worried about the stamps… but he’s right, they are just stamps! We ended up getting the 2011 Garden of Love stamps, and I love them! Of course, we only needed 50-something, so that’s small potatoes compared with some!

Oh my goodness, thanks for the head’s up (and shout out!) Sweet Cream! I’ve been putting off buying my stamps—looks like I’m heading to USPS.com! Hopefully they still have some of those bad boys left ;) Glad you got all of yours secured, lady!

I’m surprised they stopped selling these babies at the post office! They seem awfully popular to pull, but at least they’re still available online. :) I spent far too much time organizing all the stamps on our invites, but there was something very relaxing about it! Kind of like doing a jigsaw puzzle.

I loved those stamps! However, I really love the new Garden of Love stamps since they have the Navy blue background and that is one of our colors! I’m so glad the stamp situation worked out for you!

we went for the “garden of love” stamps (LOVE them), but ended up needing $0.20 more in postage b/c of the thing we tied everything together with. Since we were using the $0.29 herb stamps for our rsvp postcards, that is what i decided to stick on there for the extra postage. I seriously just want to be DONE. ;)
