Why We Serve

August 2nd, 2011 @ 5:34 pm by Mrs. Candy Apple

As we are now in the home stretch, it is time to talk about something that Mr. CA and I have been thinking a lot about lately. What might that be? Well, it’s the backbone behind this whole wedding shebang—our nuptial mass. Yep, our wedding ceremony, where Mr. CA and I will pledge to stand by each other for the rest of our lives, in front of God, our family and our friends. That’s deep stuff right there, and sometimes it gets a bit lost in all of the floral inspiration, the oohing and aahing over invitations, and the meal choices.

Now, none of this ceremony stuff is a secret, per se, but, well, wouldn’t you guests of the CA wedding prefer not to know about every single little thing beforehand? I didn’t think so. Let’s keep some of the mystery, shall we? Okay, then…

Why We Serve : wedding ceremony seattle Guests guests-

Whew, now that they’re gone… let’s talk Wedding Mass!

A key component of our Catholic faith is the service of others, and the giving of our resources to help those in need—financially, spiritually, emotionally, intellectually. Growing up, volunteering my time to serve others was emphasized by my parents, and I am so glad that they have instilled in me a desire to serve. Mr. CA and I continue this tradition through giving of our time, energy, and financial resources to those who need it.

What better way to demonstrate this at our wedding than to have our first act as wife and husband be to distribute the Eucharist during holy Communion?

I was actually very surprised when our officiant brought this up in a recent Skype session with him (yes, he is super awesome and uses Skype). I had never heard of the couple doing this at a wedding before! As soon as he said it, though, it just made so much sense.

Rev. J explained that, in distributing the consecrated bread, we “demonstrate, with one of (our) first actions as husband and wife, (our) desire to serve the community side by side.”

I fell in love with the idea immediately, and demanded that we do this during our ceremony. I was slightly concerned, as Mr. CA and I aren’t Eucharistic Ministers, but Rev. J assured us that this is fine, and that he is able to make us ’extraordinary’ Eucharistic Ministers for the day. Excellent!

During Communion, all of our guests will be invited forward as a sign of the role each one of our guests is playing in our ceremony. Those who are not receiving the Eucharist will also come forward to receive a blessing, placing their hands over their hearts.

In this way, Mr. CA and I will show our unity with our family and friends, and each other, as we serve them as husband and wife.

I cannot wait to do this. What a meaningful thing to work into our ceremony! I am so glad that Rev. J suggested it.

Are you and your future spouse planning on distributing the Eucharist during your nuptial mass? Have you been to a wedding where the couple did this?

How cool! Our priest had us “receive” the gifts brought up by our cousins before handing them to him.

I have never been to a wedding with Communion, but I’ve only been to one Catholic church wedding and the groom wasn’t Catholic. It’s nice you can do something that’s meaningful for you both to start your marriage!

My oldest niece and her husband had Communion, three years ago, at their wedding. They are Lutherans and did it after they did their sand ceremony and before they presented roses to their parents. It was very moving to watch them and they said they had fun doing it!!

We didn’t do this in part because I’m so much of a klutz that I was afraid I’d drop the host or worse, the wine. Looking back at our wedding, I wish I had done it anyway (I’m sure the priest or liturgy director would have explained what to do if I dropped something.) I think it’s great that you’re doing this!

We did this! Just make sure you hold the bread and the mister holds the wine, just in case it spills!

I love the meaning behind this, it will be so nice to include it during your ceremony.

Yes, so great to hear beyond the trappings of the pomp and circumstance of the day. God bless you both to serve all the days of your life! I love Catholic Mass weddings when the couple knows the meaning well.

Do you know the “Servant Song” in the Catholic liturgy? Great lyrics for your wedding day!

So cool that your will be the serving your Mass eucharist!

hey red_seattle, when we pray “Jesus, wash me in the blood of Christ”, hey it happens… we get splashed in His humor at times, and I always get a smile on when this happens during eucharist! :P (but yes, on a white dress, make sure you have one of those instant stain remover sticks, it works great!)

I love that you’re incorporating a blessing for those not receiving the Eucharist, too. :) Such a personal and meaningful tradition to include in your ceremony!

I love this idea - have never heard of it or seen it, but it is wonderfully symbolic. Especially like the thought of inviting everyone to come up to receive a blessing! (I am a non-practicing Catholic and I do not choose to receive Communion, but I would absolutely be thrilled to be a part of this!)

A few of my friends as well as my brother and his wife did this at their wedding, and it was a very special time for them. They remember it fondly as also a time to see their guests who had come to witness their marriage. I also plan on doing the same at my wedding, whenever that may be.

Kudos to your priest for suggesting it to you! It is an awesome gesture and if I were a guest at your wedding, I would also see it as a special moment between You, the Eucharist and your guest.

@red_seattle one time, my family was bringing up the gifts during a (packed) sunday mass, and my sister- who was 5 or 6 at the time- sneezed all over the host. No joke. you could hear the congregation do the OH-NO-SHE-DIDNT gasp from miles away

Such a meaningful opportunity to serve :) I’m hoping our priest will allow us to do the same!
