Mrs. Ladyfingers, Saint Petersburg, FL Age and Occupation: 30, Marketing Manager Fiance's Age and Occupation: 33, Sports Writer Engagement Date: December 24, 2010 Wedding Date: November 2011 Venue: Palma Sola Botanical Park About Me: I hail from Oklahoma, he was born and raised in Long Island. Fate brought us together, and now we live in a cute little rental house with our nutty dog, and our aloof cat. We both love to read, watch movies, explore our town, and laugh like hyenas. When I’m not obsessively wedding crafting, I enjoy stalking style and decorating blogs, making collages and painting, napping, thrifting, rearranging our bookshelves, and being a total weirdo with my friends. Hi!
About Mrs. Ladyfingers

In the scheme of things, our invitations were a piece of cake. You wouldn’t know that to talk to me, however. I stressed out so much that I would do something wrong, that they wouldn’t get to the people, that our guests would think I did a crappy job lining the envelopes and making the ribbons… any number of things that really  don’t matter.

It was when talking to a friend one night about a different topic (to be specific, DIY flowers), that I heard myself saying, “If you’re going DIY, fine. But you shouldn’t expect yourself to be able to produce the same quality as a professional unless you’re suuuuuper crafty - and you have to be OK with that!”

Why I don’t listen to myself, I just don’t know.

So, in no particular order, here are the four things I fretted about on our invitations that I finally just let go. I added little doodles to distract you.

I tried, I really did, to cut our website notes JUST THE RIGHT SIZE so they covered the ribbon but didn’t extend too far. In 90% of the cases, I did not meet that goal. Hiding the seam? Not so much. I showed these to Mr. LF a couple of times, asking, “Are you SUUUUURE” this isn’t a big deal? And both times, he looked at me and said, “I don’t even know what you’re showing me.” So I let it go.

Level of obsession (on a scale of 1-10): 3

Ah, plain, untouched envelopes. So much that can go wrong. I stamped and stamped the backs of each envelope with our custom address stamp, and then, eager to move onto the next step, picked up the whole pile and *tap*tap*tap* against the table to even out the stack. Then, I noticed: The ink from the stamp? It was not dry. So here you have the smudgy-smudges on many of our previously plain, untouched envelopes. I may or may not have cried. There were some that were just too bad to send that way, so I lined a few of our reserve envelopes, but for ones like this? I left them. Hey, if they notice, I’ll just blame it on the post office.

Level of obsession: 5

The liner paper that we used ended up being more of a thin card stock weight. Therefore and henceforth, when I bent the flap down to score the liner paper, I got these little bends and creases in the envelope corners. Could I have produced these liners in a more professional, less-bendy way? Probably. Did this cause me any grief at all? Not. No, it did not. I figure most people will just tear into the envelope anyway, despite my careful lining and scoring and gluing. Chalk this up to handmade follies.

Now, THIS. THIS was a real problem for me for the longggggest time. I think this was the primary reason I put off assembling the invites for so long. What is this? Too-loose belly bands. I’d envisioned this a certain way: the belly band would look purdy and be functional, as well, and would hold the invite and RSVP card together in a little bundle. It worked out a different way: wrapping the ribbon around a dummy invite (a piece of paper cut to the same size) and gluing the ends together, then SLIIIIIDING it off, did not necessarily produce a nice, tight fit. More often than not, it produced the above. And man, did I freak out about this. As I stuffed the envelopes, I silently cried as I slid another too-loose bundle into the envelope.

I asked everybody and their mother about this. Does this look stupid? Will this work? Should I do something? I Googled. I searched Weddingbee. I couldn’t find one person who talked about loose belly bands. Had nobody gone through the stress I had gone through?? Were all their bands PERFECT?!

And then it hit me: No. The reason I couldn’t find one thread or post about loose belly bands (and if I have to say that phrase one more time I’m going to throw up in my mouth) is that NOBODY STRESSED ABOUT THIS. I could either redo all 50 of them, or move on. So, as you can see, I did indeed move on.

Level of obsession: 11

The invite phase is a tough one, m’ladies! I’m thrilled it’s over—but not because I expect to breathe easy. Hah – no, I know better. I’m thrilled because it means it’s all coming together. Soon, these invites will be in the mail, people will be sending their acceptance or regrets, and we will be one big step closer to holy matrimony (holy moly).

Did you have little things about your invites that you just couldn’t let go? How were you able to finally move on? Do you like doodles?

I do like doodles, indeed. And I would have cried over the smudges too. Of course in the grand scheme of things none of this stuff really matters, but when we are putting our time and love into it and it’s not as pretty as we envisioned, that sucks!

This is hilarious and comforting only because I’ve been through something very similar the past few weeks. I’m 3 weeks “late” getting these out and my problems and glitches have been in the printing process since that’s “all” I tried in the DIY area of invitations. I knew that making them from scratch would put me over the edge, and really I was proven correct in this notion. Ironically, last week I used your post-office excuse almost verbatum to one of my girlfriends as I was venting to her about how my printer smudged the upper left corner of 10 invite envelopes and I couldn’t figure out how to get rid of it (nor do I have any extras). Eventually I had to change the font color altogether. My biggest concern however (which has made me mildly bridezilla-ish, I’m afraid to say) is how many of my invitations were not “properly” addressed and how many of Mr. Khairing Bee’s relatives may have their wonderfully Arabic names spelled incorrectly in spite of our best efforts! Mr. Khairing Bee’s response to my ettiquete frenzy? “Who cares??!” Thanks babe! I’m going to be so glad to stuff all of these invitations in the post office box tomorrow, and if I get complaints about how the invitations look, feel, fell apart or were addressed . . . I’ll simply and politely tell them that they don’t have to come to our wedding at all if they feel that strongly about a piece of paper that requests the honor their presence in our lives.

I worried about my edges not being perfectly straight. Then I remembered no one was going to be scrutinizing my invitations, they were just going to be like, “Oh, that’s nice” and then throw it in the trash. Sad, but true.

I’m glad you decided to blame the post office on the smudges on the outsides of the envelopes! They may end up even more smudged then when you dropped them in.

I too had problems getting all the belly bands perfect. What I ended up doing was making sure that the really good ones went to the people I thought might notice (crafty friends, recent brides) and sent the not as good ones to the people who consider an invitation a bother.

Isn’t it funny the things we stress over? And they’re usually things no one would ever notice anyway!

I know I would stress over the same things…and I love doodles! I particularly love exhibit #2!

Going thru that exact same thing with my wish cards and trying to heat emboss them. If this embossing buddy does not help then the He_ _ with it they will have specks on them.

If anyone could tell me the secret of getting ribbon to stay tight on paper, I would love to know! The extent of my craftiness was trying to assemble my (pre-printed, pre-cut) programs and my poor ribbon just flopped around everywhere, no matter what I tried. It’s beyond me. (I scrapped ribbon for gluedots, much more my speed).

I dont think anyone is going to be scrutinizing invitations unless they are currently diy’ing their own invitations. I just got a wedding invitation in the mail and I did make a few judgements, but hey… I was looking for ideas. Any who, im just glad there is no one thats planning a wedding on my guest list. Hehe.

I stressed over things with our invites, but in the end I figured I was just a little crazy because no one else would notice, or if they did wouldn’t care.

I’m working on mine right now. Everything is going great except the printing process. I’m printing everything at home and I’m freaking out because it’s just not coming out the way I need it to!!! I know that everything will turn out ok, whether it is “perfect” or not. But for now… I’m freaking!

@Khairing Bee: Hey, if they’re his relatives and he doesn’t care - go with it!

@Miss Cannon: Yep, totally true. Still… when I was doing them, I was thinking, THESE will be the invitations that change people’s minds about invitations! Yeah, no. They’ll still get tossed.

@Miss Teaspoon: Aw, thanks!!

@iswimibikeirun: This. I totally favored those who I thought might care (or those who I *want* to like my invites!).

@eeper: I’m convinced it’s all a matter of luck.

@mrs.josh: Don’t freak! Your freaking will keep you from moving forward. Just do it, then make some crazy doodles on your “mistakes.” The invites will be awesome!

@Lynnie11276: use colored ink and clear embossing powder…stops the specks!

if i had a loose belly band i just redid it. I found slightly bending the z-card into a ‘u’ shape as I was sliding it on/on helped with not having a loose end result.

I own my business and design invitations for a living and I totally laughed when reading this because I could relate. I got into the business after designing elements for my own wedding and had many years of trial and error from everything to liners, envelopes, what type of glue to use, rhinestones that would stay on, etc…it is a lot of work and I’m still learning something new everyday. Kudos to you girl for doing it yourself!

HIGH FIVE to you, Ladyfingers, for letting those things go!
Your invites are gorgeous.

We are just in the design process and I may have to revisit this post later to remind myself that the little smudges are JUST little smudges.
