About Miss Honey

Long-Term Locks

August 4th, 2011 @ 9:11 am by Mrs. Honey

I’m not the biggest fan of my hair and have hair envy of girls with curlier hair and girls with straighter hair. I’m also pretty awful at styling my hair and my hair has no style of its own, which makes my lack of styling abilities even worse. I have weird cowlicks that cause my hair to grow funny. If I don’t style my hair, one side curls under while the other side flips out—I refer to it as my hair wave.

In high school I had long, straight hair…I would dye it occasionally but nothing too extreme. It wasn’t until college that I really started experimenting. I chopped it off bit by bit and tried darker colors and highlights until I finally found the style I loved. The structured bob, that sits just below my chin, colored a medium shade of brown…and sometimes reddish highlights.

Like a lot of brides, I have been trying to grow my hair out for the big day. Yes, knowing that I like my hair shorter and knowing I look better with shorter hair. It’s been rough to say the least. I haven’t drastically chopped it or colored it for about a year. Prior to my recent haircut, the last haircut I had wasssss, well let’s just say I have only had it cut once in 2011 and that was two weeks ago. On the very rare occasion that my hair is down and not in a ponytail, it looks like this:

When I went to get my hair trimmed a couple weeks ago, I talked to my stylist, who is also a great friend, about doing my wedding-day hair. And she is in! She will come up to the lake the morning of the wedding and do my hair and the hair of whoever else wants theirs done. And she will drink mimosas with us because she’s cool like that.

This got me thinking about what I want for my “I do” hair. To be honest, I really wasn’t excited about figuring out how to wear my hair, because I’ve had bad luck with up-dos in the past. I knew right away that I didn’t want an up-do; it would just be too formal for the Honey wedding. But I didn’t really know where to start and didn’t know what I was looking for.

Enter Pinterest. The greatest hair-inspiration site ever. There are enough images being pinned daily to indulge any bride-to-be. Cha-ching! Just like my wedding-dress inspiration, I have a very clear pattern in what I desire…

…and what I desire are curls. Soft and romantic curls! Plus, this is something I never do with my hair, so it will be different from my daily routine. Obviously I would love for my hair to instantly be longer so I can pull of some of the longer versions, but I think even with my (almost) long hair, it will look perfect. The only style I have come across that varies from the lovely curls is the beautiful low, side chignon:

Unfortunately, I don’t think my hair would look this perfect, and you have to have some good length to make that chignon work.

My hair-inspiration post may seem a little premature, but I needed to focus on the long term and see where I wanted my hair to be in January. Knowing I don’t have the most disciplined habits with trimming and taking care of my hair, I wanted to get a jump start. These pictures help me remember why I’m growing out my locks in the first place. At my last hair appointment I told my stylist to expect me two more times between now and January (perhaps she will help hold me to my word?), and of course we will do a hair trial closer to the day.

Being that I use a hair dryer and hot iron on my hair nearly every single day, I also invested in this amazing product:

I’ve been using Moroccan Oil for two weeks now, and it’s perfect. My hair feels less damaged, and it looks much more nourished than before. The fact that it smells insanely good is just a bonus.

My plan may not appear to be too hard, but considering I’ve very much neglected my hair over the last year I’m hoping to salvage what I’ve got left. Here’s to happy, healthy, and long hair in six months!

Are you growing your hair out for you wedding? What strategies are you implementing to get your hair to its healthiest and longest for your big day? Fill me in on your secrets, hive!

I am having a cow over my hair. I hate growing it out - I have fine curly hair and lots of it, so when there’s not a short cut or a cut with lots of choppy layers, it tends to get bulky and just lie there. Needless to say, neither short cuts or cuts with lots of choppy layers are conducive to growing out. I’m leaning toward the side chignon, so I need length. I love your curly inspiration pics though! And Moroccan Oil is now on my “look into” list.

Prenatal Vitamins! They work magic on your nails and hair, and will make your hair grow out really quickly. There are also vitamins called Nioxin Intensive Therapy-It’s a dietary supplement for healthy growth of hair, skin, and nails. Works amazing. I used to work at a hair salon and I used them for a whole summer and it made a world of difference–my hair was healthier but also grew faster than it ever had before. I feel your pain–I have long locks now, my wedding is in two weeks, and I CANT WAIT for my post nuptial chop!

You are not alone in neglecting your hair. I haven’t cut mine in….over a year? Yeah, it’s bad. I should probably look into some Moroccan oil, it sounds like a great product!

I’m drooling over that first hair inspiration photo. So lovely! My hair is still recovering from years of coloring/highlighting, so I may need to look into this Moroccan Oil product.

I use Morrocan oil too! I love it. I also take Biotin vitamins which can be found in Walmart. They are specifically for promoting healthy skin, nails and hair. Its working but my hair is in this awkward length between being shoulder length and being long. Ughhh I feel your pain.

I’m also growing mine out, but thats not the hard part for me - its not dying it!! I love how easy dye is for a look-change, and I’ll have to go cold turkey for the next year :( Ah well, it’ll be worth it (?)

Holy wow. I think you are my hair twin. I have the exact same problems. Crazy cowlicks, unruly tresses and add a low hair line for even more super annoyingness. The right side of my hair is an utter nightmare. It’s always off doing it’s own thing no matter how many products I use, or how much I flat iron my hair. First thing I will be doing when back from the honeymoon is heading straight over to the salon. Chop chop chop!

Love the inspiration photos!

@Jamie: I’ve heard of these vitamins, I need to check them out! I too can’t wait for my PWC!
@sarahbabs: I’m struggling with not dying either, I have to rush past the hair dye aisle every time in the store…

Ladies, Moroccan Oil is amazing! It’s a little on the high side but so far worth every.single.penny!

Oh, Honey, I’m on the “growing my hair out even though it looks better shorter” bandwagon as well. We should start a club to commiserate! And I am totally digging all of your hair inspiration photos! Lovely!

There is also a Moroccan argan oil shampoo and conditioner made by Organix. I’ve been using it for about a month now, it smells awesome and makes my hair super soft and it feels alot healthier.

@Miss Ladyfingers: You must be my hair twin. I too have fine curls and when placed in humidity, it is large enough to get its own area code!

I am taking pre-natal vitamins and Biotin. I was a dermatology nurse for one glorious year, what gal does not want to know about skin, hair and nails….and the MD I worked with gave recommendations on Biotin and the doses.

I am too growing my hair out just for the wedding. I used to do all sorts of crazy stuff to my hair, dye it bright bright red, then dye it black, and then cut it all off, and now Im growing it out. I have been for a year and a half now. (my hair is a very slow grower) and it is just now almost to the length Ive always imagined. and Im 2 and a half months away from the wedding! Anyways, my hair is as healthy as can be, and its because I dont hardly do anything to it. I mean I wash and condition it on a regular basis (every other day-sometimes every 2 days) and I dont ever blow dry, straighten, or put anything in it other than the moisturizers and leave in conditioners.

I am stealing that first inspiration picture, just gorgeous! Seriously, pre natal vitamins are the best. I combo them with this vitamin called Maxi Hair. It makes my hair and nails grow super fast and strong!

won’t the oil make your hair harder to curl?

@Miss Parasol: I’m in, I love clubs :)
@MrsCrazyGardener: SO good to hear your devotion has paid off!
@tkvogel: That’s a good question, but I’m using the oil more as a conditioner to keep my hair healthier; it washes out in the water so if that’s the case I just won’t use the oil on the big day.

With all the positive reviews about prenatal vitamins, I’ve decided I NEED those. Thanks Hive!
