The Magic Plan

August 4th, 2011 @ 5:14 pm by Mrs. Magic

Last time I whined a lot about working out and how I don’t wanna miss this on television this week.

This time, I’m getting serious. For real. I heard you guys loud and clear about drinking water and exercising in the living room during commercials, and I am taking it to heart (except True Blood…which just watching shirtless Eric is a workout, eeper, I totally agree!). The carbs thing, I shall consider…are garlic fries made of carbs?

I’m hoping that by broadcasting my workout intentions to all of you, I will be pressured shamed guilted encouraged to actually following through with this plan I have imposed upon myself.

The plan is freaking awesome, y’all. It involves working out at least five days a week (I know, I got tried just typing those words), combining Couch to 5K (or C25K for y’all in the know) with yoga. Each day I do either C25K or yoga, I’ll also do some toning of my legs, arms, or abs. Here’s what this week looks like in The Magic Plan:

  • Sunday: The Day of Rest
  • Monday: C25K-Week One Day One +Legs
  • Tuesday: Yoga (1 hr)
  • Wednesday: C25K +Abs
  • Thursday: Rest
  • Friday: Yoga (1.5 hr) +Arms
  • Saturday: C25K-Week One Day Three +Legs

The Couch to 5K plan is great for me, because it is an interval plan that starts off with running one minute and walking one and a half minutes.

The gradual pace means I’m less likely to get too sore, pass out, or get a migraine. Plus, I really like the idea of being a runner again. I used to run in high school, and could run 15 miles no problem. I would like to be able to run a 5K again without passing out or vomiting.

The yoga classes I go to are actually really great! I’ve gone to a variety of yoga classes before, and most of them were too quiet or boring and left me feeling restless and like I had just wasted my time. These classes, though, are awesome—the instructor is hilarious, always mixes things up, and doesn’t leave me feeling like I just said “om” for an hour straight… not that there’s anything wrong with that…

For legs, I do the leg press squat machine thingy, the outer thigh machine thingy, and the inner thigh machine thingy. And like, good old regular squats.

For arms, I do the assisted pull-up machine, assisted dip machine, and some free weight moves.

For abs…well, I don’t have a great routine here. Crunches…crunches to the side (technical, huh?)…crunches on a ball…planks…the hundreds, that crazy Pilates move. I’m not exactly sure about the efficacy of any of these exercises though. Some people say crunches are whack. But, it’s better than nothing, right?

So far, I’ve done Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and half of Wednesday (I did the C25k, haven’t gotten to the abs yet…) of this week. And I feel pretty good, although my appetite and laundry have both dramatically increased.

And since the motivation was really flowing from everyone yesterday, I’m asking…what’s your favorite workout song? Mine is List of Demands (Reparations) by Saul Williams…I stole it straight from this Nike commercial:

I have a playlist that has Kesha, Two Door Cinema Club, Friendly Fires and some Britney Spears.

Best song, which is usually the song I end my workout to, because it motivates me to finisih is “How Do You Like Me Now” by The Heavy.

Yay Miss M! Congrats on the motivation, that looks like a very thorough workout plan :) And, your post came at the perfect time - I just logged onto the “bee to procrastinate and avoid the run I’m supposed to do tonight - but thanks to you, I’m going to do it. Ugh. But, overall, good!
As for motivation songs - I love “Untouched” by the Veronicas - fab both for running and for ellipticalling (is a word, I swear) becuase it has a superfast beat and is, like, five minutes long. I will have to check out yours, I haven’t heard it yet!

Goooooo Magic! That’s an awesome workout regimen. :) One of my favorite workout songs is “The Rockafeller Skank” by Fatboy Slim.

Yay, you can do it! Another good motivator, is take a ‘before’ picture, and then keep taking one every couple of weeks or once a month. You’ll feel so good about yourself when you actually see the results, since sometimes you build muscle when working out, so don’t see results on the scale because muscle weighs more than fat.

P.S. my google reader feed is whack. Haven’t gotten any updates on your personal blog in weeks, but they show up here :(

You have turned me on to the C25k…thanks! I have a “Work that Ass” playlist that is quite the range but my favorites are Calibria 2008 by Enur and Workout Plan by Kanye. I like good beats that I can get into the rhythm with.

I got super excited after I learned I lost two inches from my waist and hips. I would have never known if I hadn’t done ‘before’ measurements (not pictures)

It’s sooooo motivating to see progress.

I do measurements once a month (same friend measurements in the same spot for consistency), which include: hips (largest part); abs (belly button); each bicep, each thigh, chest/shoulder and breast (largest part).

I do the scale once per week (every Monday morning right when I wake up…after I pee of course hahaha!)

You might also want to consider how long you can do your longest plank, how many squats and push ups (on knees) until you can’t possibly do anymore and measure this every month, too.

Your plan sounds awesome, keep it up. Once you’re into your routine you might want to consider if you’ll get a better workout with weights and not using the machines,

I’m rooting for you!!!

for the crunches, which i hate traditionals…i’ve found using a double grip 8lb medicine ball very helpful! once you’ve got this, you can pump out “Russian Twists” and “Straight Leg Raises” using medicine ball during commercials! love it because once you’ve got that fairly cheap piece of equipment, you can rock away at home. and both exercises work arms and core (belly)…double score!

What a great workout plan, it’s very motivating to read! I listen to lots of top 40 music to work out: Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga, etc. and then throw in a couple of random 80’s/90’s songs I love like Journey and Wham! Keep up the awesome work!

This is really encouraging me to revamp my pre-wedding exercise routine. And it really seems like something that can be maintained past your wedding day.

I listen to my fastest punk rock when I’m doing cardio because I run faster and when I’m cooling down I listen to slower reggae/ska. It seems to work well for me.

Crunches ARE wack! :) Plank, side plank, and compound exercises like squats and pushups will get your core strong in no time. Though, hundreds are pretty hardcore also. I did those in a dance class one time, they definitely do something.
