Mrs. Funnel Cake's Picture
Mrs. Funnel Cake, Zürich, Switzerland/Columbus, Ohio Age and Occupation: 24, Visual Communication Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Application Engineer Engagement Date: May 30, 2010 Wedding Date: October 2011 Venue: Catholic church followed by a botanical conservatory About Me: I'm an American designer who moved to Switzerland for love after a fairytale beginning at the top of the Eiffel Tower. I love travel, photography, museums, learning German so I can speak with my mother-in-law, cooking (eating), cuddling, and I'm not afraid to try something new even if it terrifies me. My Swiss/Brazilian man and I are both down to earth people planning a traditional Catholic wedding in my hometown with some quirky cultural exceptions to reflect our different backgrounds. We look forward to celebrating with friends and family from all over the world in a classic, sophisticated fusion of heritage and love.
About Mrs. Funnel Cake

Bees, I’ll admit that when we first started planning a wedding in Ohio from Switzerland, I was pretty apathetic about planning my dream wedding from far far away. I didn’t want to burden Mama Funnel Cake who would be doing most of the legwork for me.

In fact, in that first email that my mother wrote me about dates, she had already talked to one of my sister-in-laws and told me they favoured having the wedding at St. Chris in Grandview, the reception at Our Lady of Victory Hall in Upper Arlington and the catering by Berwick, a tried-and-true local catering company.

Whelp, pack your bags folks. No more blogging here. Funnel Cake wedding planning is all done!

Throw in a wedding cake from where we buy birthday cakes from:

An affordable dress from Craigslist:

…and don’t forget to book the band we’ve used for two previous Funnel Cake sibling weddings. In one fell swoop, Mama Funnel Cake had laid the grounds for our wedding plan in less than 24 hours after learning of our engagement.

But it was almost depressing how normal and unlike ourselves the wedding seemed. I couldn’t help feeling a pang of helplessness over the long distance wedding planning. Should I just resign myself to going along with whatever is easiest for everyone or should I strive to personalise it?

I tried to think about how our wedding reception would look in the Victory Hall at Our Lady of Victory Church where my family attends fish fries during Lent.

Mr. Funnel Cake was not convinced that the hall would be a great place. I think the elderly people on the OLV website scared him. I searched in vain for more pictures to “show off” what I could vaguely recall as a bright sunlit room.

But Mr. Funnel Cake was still unimpressed by what he considers “typical American architecture”, with its overwhelming dark interiors compared to Swiss design. Maybe he would have taken more of an interest if I had found these photos of the room sooner:

Luckily this was just the beginning of planning and I would have more than enough opportunity to voice our opinions and wishes about wedding decisions. My wonderful mother is also brilliant at coming up with many ideas and options so I really didn’t have anything to worry about. But there are projects and aspects of planning that I have to forsake because of the distance, like photo booths and DIY goodness for instance.

And still… my heart can sigh that I am unable to participate in cake tasting in Columbus. I’ll have to leave that one up to the relatives…

Does your family have a big influence on the decisions about your wedding?

I’d be going nuts not having any say in anything (more or less). It just isn’t me! LOL!
As for our families? NONE!!!! Absolutely none whatsoever. The only thing that they could sorta be given credit for is the fact they vacation at our venue yearly. (My second time was this past July, my FI has been there 8 times and counting!)

I’m gonna say your dress is about 10 billion times prettier than that craigslist one. I’m so glad you got to make your wedding into something that’s truly for you and Mr. FC. I would say you should go to a nice local bakery and get cake on the day your family does the cake tasting back home so it will be like you are there with them in spirit and you still get cake!

I gotta tell ya, I tasted cake from Giant Eagle at a bridal show and it was so delicious that we booked our cake with them. (The new Giant Eagle in Upper Arlington, if you’re interested.)

This would be so difficult for me, but at least Mama FC is resourceful and willing to consider your wishes. Oh and Mr. FC is crazy, I would love to dine with those folks in the first picture! :)

@Miss Ticket: I kind of get a kick out of the fact that my dress IS a Craigslist dress. Just not of the Columbus variety. I swear, they always have some great treasures when I visit the site. :P

@Ryna: haha, lucky you get total control! I guess I’d be sort of freaking out if I had to coordinate all of it myself from here. I definitely need my mom!

@Masala: really?? I wish I could taste and see! I’m not sure what Mama FC would say about Giant Eagle… but it sounds like a great deal!

@Miss Pony: right you are Miss Pony. Mr. Funnel Cake IS crazy. ;-)

My mom is heavily involved, and I’m working on shifting her views from the more traditional to the Honey vision, fortunately she is game for everything and realizes it’s our day :) It sounds like your mama is pretty open too!

My family just likes hearing about the planning, they really haven’t had any big say in it! But on the rare occasion that they do have an opinion, I definitely take it very much into account~

My mom is definitely an opinionated woman, and I had to learn that what she said was always a suggestion–not a decree. I’m glad Mama FC is being supportive and helpful from across the pond!

So, I think I missed one of your posts, or maybe I just missed an inside joke. Is that your actual dress that you purchased off Craigslist, or just a “representation”?

@Miss Fettucini: It is a representation of the kind of gowns my mother was suggesting to me on Craigslist when I first began shopping for dresses. (Her links are no longer listed).

My family has a HUGE influence on wedding decisions. The date of events, how many people to invite, our wedding colors, the clothes. You name it, I’ve adjusted the decision to appease someone. I figure as long as they’re not straying too far from what I want, what’s the big deal?
