Wedding Nightmares

During the course of wedding planning, I’ve had several pretty intense wedding nightmares. And I’m not just talking about wedding-related dreams. I’m talking about full-blown wedding nightmares, those of the variety in which EVERYTHING goes disastrously wrong.

OK, I guess none of my nightmares have been quite as bad as this image. I mean, I’ve never shown up at the ceremony sans wedding dress (phew!). Though I’ve come dangerously close to this, and most of the time my nightmares have to do with my wedding-day attire.

Here are just a few wedding disasters I’ve dreamed about recently:

  • No veil come wedding day. As you know, I’m definitely a veil bride, so the prospect of not having one on my wedding day is most certainly not OK with me. In my dream, I spent hours desperately searching for a veil without ever finding a single one. Did they all just disappear? I guess so.
  • Wedding dress doesn’t fit. To be fair, it was too big, which is a far better predicament and much less depressing than having a dress that is too small. But still, a wedding dress that doesn’t fit on your wedding day is completely useless, whether it’s too big or too small. At this point in my dream, I was also incredibly late to the ceremony, so there was absolutely no time for alterations, and so I just stood there in my giant dress and sobbed.
  • Wedding dress is stained. As I slipped into my wedding dress, my consciousness recognized the distinct possibility that I could get makeup on my dress, so I tried to be really careful. Of course, my efforts were futile, and when I looked down at the front of my dress, it was totally smeared with foundation.

My most recent wedding nightmare was particularly disquieting. The night after I made my first alterations appointment (which is this week!), I had a dream about the appointment. I was patiently waiting for my dress when the consultant told me that it would be slightly different than I remembered. I was totally confused and panicked, so she explained that the original dress was too difficult to alter, so the designer just changed the design and fabric a bit.

When I put on my dress, it was completely different. It had a ton of lace, the bodice was primarily see-through, and there was a drop waist. I basically died. I know some people like these qualities in a wedding dress, but they are absolute deal-breakers for me. And to top it all off, the fabric was this gross stretchy material, which the consultant described as a “white denim.” She went on to add that this material was much easier for them to work with and alter. I quickly dissolved into tears, completely freaking out and demanding to get my original dress back.

I woke up in a state of total panic, convinced that my dream dress was really gone forever and had, in fact, been replaced by this monstrosity. But as sanity set back in, I remembered that there is no way a bridal salon like Priscilla of Boston could ever do something this crazy. And in any event, it wasn’t worth worrying about until after I have my alterations appointment and actually see my dress.

So now that I’ve just shared my crazy wedding nightmares, it’s your turn! Have you ever had any wedding nightmares? I’d love to hear about them, if only because it would mean that I’m not the only one whose subconscious is working overtime to add additional wedding stress!

    I had a dream that I’m ready to walk down the aisle and suddenly realize that I’m not wearing any shoes! At this point in the dream our DOC starts searching for them and realizes they are in her car! Not good. Dreams are crazy. I know this would never actually happen and our DOC is awesome! Unfortunately, I think that this is only the start of the wedding dreams.

    A white denim wedding dress…that is hilarious. I haven’t had a wedding dream in a long time, gut I’m sure they’ll pick up any day now.

    I had a dream that it was the day of the wedding and I’d completely forgotten to do anything. I wasn’t certain when we walked into our venue that there would be anything there. It was more complciated by that… but then the mister had a nightmare a few days later that the DJ showed up and he only had 57 songs. We all have them! Even the guys :)

    Oh! And I also had a dream once that it was the day of the wedding and my dress had come in (??) and it was NOT MY DRESS. It was one of those 80s, long lace puffy sleeves, etc. monstrosities, and when I demanded to know from the bridal shop why this dress was ordered, the lady simply said, “I thought it would look better on you than the one you chose.”

    wow – white denim. that WOULD be scary! my main two nightmares involve (1) showing up to my first fitting and my dress being bright red and (2) tripping and falling down the stairs (and taking my dad with me) on my walk down the aisle. yikes!

    AMG – a white denim see-through bodice? I would have woken up in a cold sweat!

    When I was struggling to work out the details with my cake (which turned out to be an unreasonably difficult task), I had a recurring dream that I would come to the “venue” in my dress and look up a beautiful spiral staircase to find that my cake had been balanced on the railing. Naturally, it had to fall on my head considering this was a stupid wedding dream. I was awakened by a falling cake every night for two months!

    I’m having them nightly at this point. The worst I can remember… Well I was getting ready in a closet with my mom and sister who were wearing casual clothes (jeans and tee) I had just got back from a run so I was sweaty and icky and had no time to shower or wash my hair. The dress was cream and cocktail length my bouqet was all carnations and to top it off my fiance was busy doing yard work as I was “prepping”… It was awful! You get used to them though. My fiance has a great laugh when I tell him the newest one.

    I had a nightmare that I was getting married at my Mom’s house and we didn’t have any chairs. I also wasn’t wearing any makeup, and had to do my own hair, which I could not do one my own. But in my dream I was really calm, I didn’t care about not having chairs and being unorganized. Oh and in my dream none of our guests showed up! I woke up a little disturbed but also proud of my “dream self” for remaining so clam!

    White Denim!? It’s like an 80’s motorbike wedding. Utterly terrifying. You’re getting close to the big day now. I hope the nightmares don’t keep you up too much. Though this one does make for a hilarious (if frightening) mental image.

    Oh gosh! I thought I was the only one!
    I’ve had two pretty sad dreams or anxiety driven thought. One, nobody showed up to the wedding, I mean nobody. I was just standing there with my hair all a mess and no makeup ready for my big day but looking haggard and no guests.
    My other was last week, I haven’t been sleeping and I was for sure my fiance’ was just going to change his mind. Sorry, I thought I loved you but I take it all back!
    The second one was the worst, it hit home and bothered me for several days until FI asked me if I was ok because I was looking pretty tired. I just started to cry. He reminded me that I am his best friend and this was all his idea, remember? (I’m still secretly so afraid of it though!!)

    “White denim” – LOL!

    I hadn’t had wedding dreams in a while, but I guess with less than 3 months to go (OMG!), they get more recurrent… Last week, I dreamed my FI, in laws, my parents and I arrived to our venue to have our menu tasting, and when we got to the gardens, we realized it was NOT the tasting, but the wedding! The reception was someplace else inside the park, because it was not “our” date, and I thought “Thank God I’m wearing white clothes”… the dancing floor was far too big and there were not enough people, certainly not all our guests! After a while me and FI went back home, the wedding was over and I had this “Oh, well” kind of feeling… and, of course, I woke up feeling anxious and trying to make sense out of it (NOT recommended when you’re feeling anxious!).

    But I do think -even though we all know these dreams are pretty normal and standard in every bride- it’s important to try to figure out what they mean. I guess for me it pointed out my fear of not being 100% ready to get married, of not having enough time to enjoy this engaged status with my FI and my family and having the wedding just “show up” one day… and of not having the *omgsomuchfunbestpartyever* wedding… stuff I’m working through, though 😉

    Your “new” dress sounds a lot like some of Pnina dresses on Say Yes to the Dress! And while I’ve yet to have a wedding nightmare, I used to have pretty intense sorority recruitment nightmares in college. You might laugh, but those are def not jokes.

    I was dying laughing reading this. I know these are the types of nightmares I’ll have soon enough, but they made me laugh so hard they brought tears to my eyes.
    I know that when you go for your actual fitting, it will go perfectly. You’ll see.

    Phew! I’m so glad I’m not the only bride who’s plagued by wedding nightmares! Though I don’t wish them on anyone. :)
    @AlExandra: Ah, no shoes! Now I know what else I’m going to dream about tonight! :)
    @Miss Pony: I’m going to knock on wood for you, Pony! No more wedding dreams! It’s funny, but as I’ve gotten closer to the wedding, the dreams have eased up. Maybe it’s because things are actually really coming together, so it’s kind of crazy to dream that they’ll go horribly wrong?
    @weirdfishes: You’re so sweet! Thank you! :)
    @Miss Ladyfingers: Oh my goodness, your wedding dress dream is basically a recurring nightmare of mine! That is the worst! Why do they always go after the dress? :(
    @Charcole2011: Oh my word, a red dress AND tripping–now that’s a nightmare!
    @Mrs. Tartlet: I did wake up in a cold sweat! It took me quite a while to realize that my dream was not actually reality.

    @Khairing Bee: Oh my gosh, falling cake is no good! Ahh!
    @Miss Bug: That sounds terrible! And I can’t believe you’re having nightmares every night. I’m crossing my fingers I don’t reach that point–I don’t think I could handle it!
    @NYCcaliBRIDE: Haha, I love your calm dream self. I’m the completely opposite–I go crazy!
    @Chibop: Well congrats on your real marriage! So happy for you!
    @JD: Haha, very true!

    @Future Mrs. Leon: Oh no, that second one is so sad! But I’m so glad he’s been reassuring! :)
    @MariaPaz: Wow, I love your analysis of your dream! You’re a pro!
    @Future Army Wife: Haha, I never thought of Pnina’s dresses, but you’re so right! Only mine was way uglier than any of hers! Oh, and I can only imagine how intense sorority nightmares are!
    @Miss Teaspoon: So true!
    @Miss Kettle: Thanks for laughing with me! Although these nightmares are no fun at the time, in hindsight, they are good for a laugh!

    I have definitely had a few wedding nightmares. My scariest one was it was 3:55 (wedding is at 4:00) and my matron of honour and the hair dresser and I had JUST STARTED driving to the place where my makeup and hair would be done! I woke up freaking out.

    It actually turned out to be a good dream, in that it drew to my attention my worries that my hair stylist wouldn’t be reliable enough (friend of a friend). I have since switched and haven’t had any more dreams about that :)

    Hmmm I am trying to remember all my wedding nightmares but nothing is coming to me. Maybe there are just too many to think of. I have these all the time! I think the most recent was that I completely forgot to write our ceremony and was busy scrambling 10 minutes before I was supposed to walk down the aisle!
