Let’s be real for a second; weddings are expensive and not just for those hosting it. From plane tickets and hotels, to rental cars and some new duds, guests can end up spending a chunk of change well before they’ve even bought a gift. It’s precisely why I told Macs, my mom and Sassy not to throw me a shower. So many of our friends live far away I’d feel horrible having them make a special trip. I also didn’t want to burden anyone with the planning or the added expense a few months or weeks before the wedding.
As time went by and our wedding date got closer I started to have second thoughts. Am I missing out on the ‘bridal experience’? Would it be something I’d regret? I wished I didn’t vehemently object to a shower but with two months to go it was far too late to say anything.
A few weeks passed and my birthday was just around the corner. Much like this past Christmas, Valentine’s Day and anniversary, I told Macs I didn’t want to do anything given the wedding expenses. He insisted we do something, even if it was just going out for breakfast. So I agreed and on Saturday afternoon we made our way to what I thought was a new place for brunch.
As I walked in I saw a group of people to my right but it didn’t realize who they were until they shouted “Surprise!” I was in shock.

Overwhelmed and overcome with emotion, I stepped away a few times to try and stop the waterworks (which didn’t help). Eventually I made my way around the room, hugging everyone before shot gunning a glass of champagne in an attempt to calm my nerves.
Once we were seated Sassy had us play a few games, including who could draw the best bunny…with their paper on their head.

While everyone dined on finger sandwiches, scones and other delightful goodies,

I donned a sunhat and may have made a ridiculous pose with the mini bouquet before opening my gifts.

There was some skimpy lingerie,

a few kitchen gadgets,

some rabbits joined the party (in the form of salt & pepper shakers)

and a beautiful box that brought me to tears.

It was a cookbook full of friend’s and family’s prized recipes, some of which were past down generation to generation; like my grandmother’s pierogis and my friend’s great grandmother’s rum cake.

I wanted to read every single recipe right then and there, but the tea party had come to an end. Those two hours went by in a blink of an eye and I can only imagine it’ll be the same on our wedding day.

Mom & Me

MOH Sassy & BM Mermaid
I was completely blown away by what my mom and Sassy had planned. From the beautiful arrangements by our florist to the mismatched china and adorable favors, it was perfect and exactly what I didn’t know I wanted.
To be honest I should have known that something was up given all the times Sassy chose not to accompany me to Marshall’s or Michaels. While I was out crossing things off my to do list Sassy was busy working on her own. Aside from snooping on my computer for everyone’s addresses and contact information, she was busy designing the invitations and all the printed pieces.

I never thought I’d have a shower, let alone one so amazing. I simply can’t express how lucky and blessed I am to have such wonderful women in my life.
Were you on the fence about a shower? Were you glad you had one?
