But after about a year and a half of doing the long-distance thing, I was tired of the goodbyes. I decided to look for a job in Pittsburgh. Well, boy did I choose the wrong time in all of history to look for a job. I applied for hundreds of jobs; I even went on interviews over the phone and in person while I was in town for a visit. But, alas, I couldn’t seem to find more than a part-time job, and a part-time job was not going to pay the bills.* After about six months of my job search with dismal results, I was becoming exceptionally disheartened. (Don’t worry—this story still has a happy ending!) Mr. Ticket to the rescue.

Mr. Ticket decided that if I hadn’t found a job by March 1, 2010 he was moving to California. So decisive, that man—he chose a date and stuck to it. (Obviously I did NOT find a job by that date or the story would be shorter.) Needless to say, I was THRILLED (still feeling a twinge of guilt but THRILLED), and I began helping him plan immediately. He decided to take a job working at my family’s business rather than looking for one at the time, and with that we began to work out the details. I looked for apartments in the area that met our criteria (decent yet cheap), we found a company to ship his car through, I bought plane tickets (one for my round trip to Pittsburgh to help him pack and move and one for him to California), and he gave his boss notice. His boss was incredibly cool about everything and even offered to let him work long distance from California on side work if he wanted to (he worked in computer programming).
On June 9, 2010, Mr. Ticket moved from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Southern California. Best. Birthday Present. EVER! Yeah, June 9th just happens to be my birthday.

Mr. Ticket stayed in a spare room at my parents’ house for one month until the apartment he found was ready. And about two days after he moved in, Mr. Ticket and I decided to adopt a kitten from a local shelter. That little kitten made everything a whole new level of real for me. Granted, I still call her “his cat” when she does something wrong, but she was OURS. Four short months after the kitten adoption, Mr. Ticket surprised me with a proposal.

Did you and your SO have a major move before your wedding? Did you adopt a furry family member?
*You may be wondering at this point why I didn’t just move in with Mr. Ticket. Well, aside from the fact that he and his two brothers were all still living with their parents and sharing ONE bathroom (I’m so impressed by FMIL Ticket for being able to do this), Mr. Ticket and I agreed not to live together before marriage. Or to do other things before marriage, for that matter, but that’s another topic for another time.
