Let’s Talk About Colour

August 8th, 2011 @ 5:33 pm by Mrs. Funnel Cake

Way back when, around the time Mr. Funnel Cake and I were discussing wedding dates, the man himself began ruminating over his wedding attire.

Out of the blue, he announced that he would like to wear a grey suit with a bright red tie that really “pops.”

I admire a man that has clear ideas of what he wants.

Nothing was set in stone at this early stage, but Mr. Funnel Cake was positive that he wanted to wear a red tie, so it formed the base of our colour palette.

I asked him if there were any other colours we should include in our autumn wedding, like yellow, orange and brown to reflect the seasonal colours.

We flip-flopped around and weren’t really excited about committing to any colour besides red, so with Mr. Funnel Cake’s attire wishes in mind, we formed a basic palette of red, black, grey and white.

Which, cough, happens to be the very colour palette of my university…

If you haven’t been distracted by the amazing alumni reference, you might notice it is a very Swiss palette if you’ve ever seen the country’s flag or some famous Swiss graphic design.

Some quaint old posters. Oh, and one of those questionable SVP posters because it’s ironic. Can’t stop me SVP, I’m marrying Mr. FC whether you like it or not!

Simple and Swiss. I liked it.

Mr. Funnel Cake was a little surprised that he basically chose our colour palette, especially later on when I had to explain that the colour palette is what you refer to when designing invites, picking out bridesmaid and groomsmen attire, flowers, the list goes on. For as little as he knew about the influence of the colour palette, it amuses me that he’s the one who picked the colours!

How did you decide on your colour palette?

Love the colours! Are you planning for red/white petals or confetti like that photo on the left?

My color palette was based on the girls’ dresses. I originally envisioned yellow, but eggplant dresses on sale in a beacy feel won out, lol…. now my whole life is one big blur of eggplant, who woulda thunk??? I love your colors! I would have lived to gowith black dresses, gorgeous!

I love your palette! Although I cannot support the college connections (I bleed blue and gold, and I’m currently a Bobcat), I think it’s very sophisticated and chic :-) I don’t remember how I came up with the palette, but I know I had it in mind when we got engaged. I said to FI “What do you think about navy, pale pink, silver, and white?” and he said “Sure. That sounds good to me.” Easy peasy!

Love your colors, but I may be a bit biased too (Go Buckeyes!). So perfect for you guys. It’s awesome that he had input! DH used to say he liked different colors every few months to stress me out :-). I think it was all in good fun, but it made me question my color scheme like 10 million times!

@Miss White Pearl: Haha, my sister had a “grunter DH” in her planning. I would probably love teal and bold green too, maybe for a spring wedding! It’s nice when the palette matches up with the season. :)

@Miss Teaspoon: Shh… don’t tell Mr. Funnel Cake but I’m trying to convince him to wear a black suit like the groom on the left. ;) And yes, we will do red and white flowers to keep in line! But I don’t think confetti is in the cards. :(

@Carolyn72: Haha well eggplant is a really pretty colour! :)

@SadieBee: Haha that’s a great way to pick out your palette. I think I was overwhelmed with how many choices there were (especially if we needed to coordinate colours with bridesmaids from across the sea), so I’m glad we kept it so simple. Your colours sound just gorgeous!

@shushu1208: Don’t worry, Mr. FC has a way of piping in months later questioning decisions I thought were already made. :P

Oh Lord, our wedding colors were a whole process, but I’m rather satisfied with how they turned out.

That’s a very chic combo of colors! I, too, had to explain to Mr. Tartlet what a permeating choice the color palette is. ;)

Haha! I love your colors in actuality, but not in principle :) We inadvertently ended up with our college colors as well: We started out with Cobalt blue, and then ended up deciding to pair it with yellow… Maize if you will :D The fiance didn’t go to Michigan with me, but his NY school colors were blue and yellow as well, so we figured it is meant to be!

Mr. FC sounds like my kind of man! I love how confident he is in knowing what he wants. And a pop of color is a GREAT idea!
