My Beloveds, Part Two

August 8th, 2011 @ 3:33 pm by Mrs. Honey

I recently talked about our trial run with the yarn spheres. A few weekends ago Mama Honey and I met in my kitchen for round two. We stuck to pretty much the same tutorial from my last post, but we changed one thing: we didn’t use cornstarch. This made the process much cleaner. We weren’t covered in head to toe with the sticky mixture, which also made everything easier and quicker. We set up, and of course, the Honey kittens were more than excited about something new and noisy on the floor:

We were able to get 33 spheres done in about 3 hours which was much more efficient than last time. This makes my total count to just over 40. Mama Honey was a genius and brought some drying racks along that made for hanging the drying spheres way easier.

Once again I let them dry a full 24 hours and then popped them outside, for our end result:

Hello, Lovers!

Last time I popped the balloons in the middle of the drying process that resulted in sad spheres. Remember how we opted not to use cornstarch this time? Well, for some reason the peach yarn did not hold its shape at all, and I ended up with loose peach spheres:

I have no earthly idea why only the peach yarn didn’t hold, because the others turned out great, and we used the same mix for all the other colors of yarn. I saved the loose spheres, just like I did the sad ones, just in case we decide to go art deco in the venue. This batch also isn’t nearly as sturdy as the previous—I think because of the lack of cornstarch. Who knew that a .99 box of cornstarch was so important! Oh well, you can’t win them all.

My main reason for writing this follow up post is to tell you to use cornstarch if you are going to use a similar tutorial to craft some yarn spheres! Take it from this bee: the messiness of the cornstarch is worth it in the end. We are going to do one more batch, just to get a few more peach and gray, but you won’t see any more of my obsession with the yarn spheres until the big day…maybe.

They turned out great! I may have to make some of these just for some fun decor in the Waffle house. Smart thinkin’ with using the drying racks!

The peach ones look great in the first picture, maybe you can cover their flaws with other string balls instead of tossing them? Overall I think these look wonderful, great job Honey!

@Mrs. Waffle: I’m partial, but aside from wedding decor, I think they would be awesome! Getting creative with holiday’s would be the perfect excuse!
@Miss Pony: Thanks! I think I will be able to salvage some of the peach ones, because you are right they don’t look that bad…

These are so awesome! Have you thought about blowing up another balloon inside the loose ones and spraying them with fabric stiffener? Just a thought…

I wish I wanted yarn balls for my wedding cause I’m dying to try this. Maybe I’ll save it for a craft project the next time I have all my new nieces and cousins over. It would make a great down room decoration for the one in college.

@Miss White Pearl: Using cornstarch makes them very sturdy, they haven’t settled at all. In my last trial I had a couple that didn’t hold and I threw them to the concrete a few times and they were fine. Without the cornstarch they aren’t as sturdy. I have them stored in plastic garbage bags until January. @curlymama318: I hadn’t thought of that! I might give that a try :) Thanks!
@Miss Kettle: It would be fun (and messy!) with kids!!

I cannot count how many times I have pulled out the laptop this week and shown off your project! :) GREAT JOB! You have passed on the obsession for sure! lol

I am going to try a batch and then, if at all possible, figure out a way to add charms to some of the spheres. Was also thinking that I may try spraying them with clear spray paint/coating-stuff for added stiffness. My only concern is the lingering smell of it.

Has anybody tried this?

Sorry - I’m a little behind on my blog-reading, but wanted to say that these look amazing! I’m totally loving your colors, and it’s such a different look than my black/white ones. Also, I found that my second batch came out different than my first batch also. The string wasn’t nearly as stiff and I’m going to have to re-do some of them. I think I diluted the fabric stiffener too much. I also noticed that my larger spheres were a little more fragile than the smaller ones. When they were left out on the table for a few days they started to get subtle flat spots where they touched the table. I’m almost positive that I’m going to re-blow up balloons in them and store them that way until the day before/of. I’ll probably do an updated post about how I corrected some mistakes, too. :-) I’m so curious to hear how yours hold up, and I absolutely can’t wait to see how you use them!
