And a Flower in Her Hand?

August 8th, 2011 @ 1:56 pm by Mrs. Teaspoon

So now on to the closest to living element of the wedding day, other than the people in it, of course—the flowers! Included with our reception venue are the floral centrepieces, and we just have a few hundred to choose from out of their book of designs. So, the bouquets are what I have been concentrating on, and namely MY bouquet!

I thought I would just go with a bunch of white roses for me and a bunch of slightly smaller white roses for my girls—now I’m not so sure, as I have been thrust into a world of ridiculously creative and beautiful weddings to be found in the world of the blogger! Bridal magazines hardly help, either.

Then I was over at my future in-laws house one evening in September last year, and they had been to the growers’ markets that day and bought some flowers—beautiful white ranunculus. Lucky me, I took a pretty little picture for my ever-expanding wedding file, because at the time I had NO idea what they were called!

And a Flower in Her Hand? : wedding flowers sydney Photo207 I scoured the Google machine and found the perfect little posey! Really shows off the beautiful layers of the ranunculus, doesn’t it? And there are a few double-petal tulips in there, too, apparently. My flower prowess is becoming obvious, isn’t it?

I went to the florist all pumped up for ranunculus, only to be informed that we might not be able to get them. Sometimes it doesn’t get warmer in Australia until a bit later—we have a bit of a warm up for a few weeks in August, then it gets colder again usually, but last year that didn’t happen so the ranunculus wouldnt grow! Needless to say, I set forth in search of more inspiration and stumbled across my lovely neighbour* Nicole’s wedding photo:

Now, I believe some of the flowers in her bouquet are actually David Austin roses, but they give that same soft, beautiful effect, don’t you think?

How often do you get to spend over $100 on a bunch of flowers and carry them around with you all day without looking like a complete weirdo? One day: your wedding day (OK, not including bridesmaid participation)!

Then I was at another wedding (if you are keeping up, yes I am 27 and ALL of my friends are getting married at the moment!), and they had some similar freesia and other “soft” flowers, and by the end of the night the boys’ boutonnieres and the girls’ bouquets were nowhere to be seen! I, being the inquisitive bride that I am, asked about them a few days later, and the bride explained that with all the hugging and being thrown around the flowers had basically been left in various parts of the reception and church because they all fell apart!

So just like that, as quick as a snap, I was back to roses again? Boy oh boy, how will a florist keep up? I can’t keep up! When I met with the florist, she suggested bringing some colour into the bouquets, either in a yellow or a pink, and I can’t believe I had overlooked pink in the past! Then I found the bouquet that has it all—different types of ranunculus, I think I spot a peony and a lily, and of course, pink! I wouldnt mind a bit more berry, eucalyptus, freesia, or something in there to really seal the deal, but I have to say we are mighty close!

How on earth did you decide on the flowers for your bouquet?

*Disclaimer: Nicole Kidman is not my actual neighbour and, yes, I am aware that she was also born in the USA, but she got married right near where I went to high school and her dad’s medical practice is just down the road from Mr. Teaspoon’s parents’ house! So, close enough…

I wanted ranunculas too! But they are definitely not in season in December so I’m having mini calla lilies and my florist is amazing and going to subsitute the ranunculas for something else!

I LOVE ranunculus! That was my first dream flower but it’s not in season here in November.

Wow, a lot of love out there for the ranuncula’s! If only they were easier to spell :-)

I’ve heard of men getting two boutonnieres (one for ceremony and hugging / receiving lines and a fresh one for photos and reception).

Those flowers are beautiful, but going for a heartier flower (hardier?) is better if you want them to last to the end of the night.

Great blog, it is indeed such a difficult decision to make for any bride, because the flowers are very important and they must look stunning:)

I was all over the place for my bouquet, but thankfully our florist picked up on the fact that I like full and lush flowers and took it from there. :) Ranunculus were actually a last-minute addition to our centerpieces and I *loved* how they looked!

I knew I wanted purple and mini calla lilies. After that I left it up to my florist to pick flowers that would go with the colour and that would be available on the wedding day. I only said I didn’t want any greenery and just left it up to her. I was so happy with the bouquets - they were lovely and help up so well (even a week later they still looked great in a vase at my parents’ place). I’m glad I gave our florist creative license - she did a great job!

Ranunculus are so beautiful. I wish they were in season! I would completely consider you and Nicole neighbors….. maybe even BFF!
