About Mrs. Ticket

The Proposal

August 8th, 2011 @ 10:42 am by Mrs. Ticket

Sister Ticket and I decided to go out shopping on Saturday afternoon. Nothing particularly special, just a day out with my sister and niece. As we walked around the mall I admitted to Sister Ticket that I secretly hoped Mr. Ticket was ring shopping as we were out. I didn’t know why, but I just had this “feeling” that he was going to be. But I was SURE I had blown it by making some comment earlier that same day about proposals. (Darn my impatience!) Sure enough after we finished shopping and I headed over to Mr. Ticket’s apartment, he was sitting in precisely the same position I had left him in HOURS earlier in his “comfy” clothes (basketball shorts and a grungy old T-shirt) playing Call of Duty. With that, I pouted into his kitchen to make dinner and forgot all about my “feeling.”

The next day, Mr. Ticket decided to play some more Call of Duty while I decided to go shopping for something I hadn’t been able to find the day before. I was out for little more than an hour before retreating back to his apartment empty handed. I always find it a bummer to go out multiple times for something and come back empty handed, so I was a little bummed out. I waved hi as I walked in the door of his apartment and headed for his bedroom to take a nap. (Hey, that’s what Sunday afternoons are good for!) Mr. Ticket got up (in the middle of a CoD game—boys don’t do this! First sign!) and followed me into his bedroom and asked me what was wrong. I told him I just had a lousy shopping trip and I wanted to take a nap. He gave me a big hug and said, “I’m sorry you didn’t have fun shopping…but will you marry me?” Then he backed away from the hug to reveal the most beautiful ring I had ever seen. Took me all of about two seconds of acknowledging the words that had just come out of his mouth to say, “Yes!” I was ecstatic (and secretly still feeling a LITTLE guilty for all the hinting), and I simply couldn’t hold it in.

My ring!!! (Personal photo)

I would love to tell you we were one of those mature couples that basks in the glory of being newly engaged, that we kept it to ourselves as our own little secret for as long as possible. But that just wouldn’t be true. I wanted to scream it from the rooftops! I immediately asked if we could call his parents and tell them the news. I wanted to tell my parents in person, and of all days Mama Ticket was at a special church event until 3 PM (four hours later)! So we started calling and texting the fantastic news to our siblings and his parents. (He hadn’t told ANYONE that he was going to propose.)

Mr. Ticket’s sneakiness:

Apparently while I had been shopping with Sister Ticket the day before, he had in fact been ring shopping (my feeling was RIGHT!) at the very same mall. He had ordered the ring the day before and picked it up that morning, making sure both times to change back into his “comfy” clothes so I wouldn’t suspect anything. The man covered his bases! He later admitted that he had been contemplating a more romantic proposal, but once he got the ring he was scared to lose it so he decided to just propose on the spot. But I love our proposal exactly the way it was. It was perfect for us. Me the wildly impatient woman, and him the sneaky and extremely thoughtful man that I love.

Two days after that I discovered Weddingbee. And now here we are! I couldn’t possibly be more excited to be here because, bees, I adore you all. I have been reading your stories, your ups and downs, your adventures, and your general awesomeness, and I’m absolutely elated to share my own story with you.

Did you have a “feeling” before your SO proposed? Did you wait to tell people or were you screaming it from the rooftops?

What an adorable story, I love the way he asked you! I had a feeling too, but I brushed it off because I figured he wouldn’t have had time/money to get a ring. Always trust a woman’s intuition though, right?

I had been shopping on the same day in the same shopping area that my FI picked up the ring, too! I don’t remember if he changed back into his comfy clothes, but when I got home he was watching tv and wrapping Christmas presents.

Whoa, Mr. Ticket is a sly fox for changing back into his comfy clothes! And, Mr. Tartlet totally got the “burning a hole through your pocket” feeling once he had the ring in hand, too. Such a sweet proposal!

Good thinking on Mr. T’s part to change back into his comfy clothes to throw off suspicious.

Oh hey I believe we are ring twins! We have different center stone shapes but our settings are the same :) Yours is beautiful with your center stone!! Can’t wait to see what wedding band you pair it with — I’m having an awful time deciding!

Clever Mr. Ticket!!! Very smart of him. I also had a gut “feeling” the night before, also was tricked out of believing it and so not only pouted but was unconscionably cranky and bratty the morning of the actual proposal (thankfully, Mr. PP jollied me out of it and still loved me enough to propose despite my Terrible-Two-type behavior!) Seriously - gotta trust the gut!

Haha, love it! Do you think he was talking to the other CoD players about it? “BRB guys, I gotta go propose!”

I love that he changed back into his comfy clothes to avoid suspicion! Also, his comfy clothes sound exactly the same as Mr. Bunting’s gaming comfy clothes: red basketball shorts and a beat-up, holey black shirt.

Beautiful ring! Mr. H also had that sparkly burning a hole in his pocket — he proposed a couple hours after picking it up too!

I had a feeling a little bit. I didn’t put this in my story, but he got the ring out of the trunk. I thought he might be doing it then, but tried not to anticipate it in case it wasn’t going to happen. Plus, he had just taken my father out to brunch earlier that day to “talk”. So I knew it was coming.
Your ring is absolutely beautiful! I love hearing about simple proposals that really truly fit a couple as who they are together.

Sounds a lot like my boyfriend… minus the proposal. (Always playing video games). I wish I could say he’s that sneaky (shopping for a ring and then changing back into his comfy clothes… oh yes, he has them too), but sadly I doubt I could be that optimistic.

Oh, I love how sneaky Mr. T was! Your story is so adorable! Mr. P tried to be sneaky, but he was wayyy too excited when he bought the ring to “not” tell me. The jig was up when he let it slip that he had to call the credit card company to get “a purchase” to go through. Um, I knew he was at the jewelry store?? Oh, Mr. P! And then he made me wait another two+ months for my ring!

That is a great proposal story! Men are so sneaky! On the day Mr. G planned his proposal he said he was going to work from home. I mentioned that maybe I’d take the day off to stay home too but he told me no way, I’d be too much of a distraction for him to get work done. Turns out he needed to shop and prep for the proposal and I totally would have ruined it!

@Kant - Since the ring didn’t come with a definite matching band Mr. Ticket and I checked out quite a few jewelry stores. We ended up going back to Jared’s and they had a ‘coordinating’ one that looks VERY similar to the channel set diamonds on the engagement ring itself. It was the closest match I could find anywhere! I will definitely be posting pictures later though =)

Wow I am really impressed by his thoroughness of changing back into his clothes both times. What a cute proposal story!

Mr. Ticket is sneaky! Great story. I had my suspicions about a proposal coming and we immediately called my bff who lived in CA at the time. We couldn’t wait to tell everyone!
