Mrs. Parasol's Picture
Mrs. Parasol, San Ramon, California Age and Occupation: 25, Non-profit writer, editor, and blogger Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Law school student Engagement Date: December 19th, 2010 Wedding Date: September 2011 Venue: Bent Creek Winery (Livermore, California); Reception: Family Residence (San Ramon, California) About Me: I am a California girl at heart. I love the outdoors, sunny days at the beach, and hiking in the woods and mountains. I also love good books and am fresh from completing my Master's degree in English and Comparative Literature in New York City. Living in NYC was an amazing experience, and while I'm glad to be back on the West Coast, I'm also thankful that my two years back East gave me an opportunity to explore new places, make new friends, and indulge my passion for Broadway shows. Oh, and I received a pretty awesome proposal from Mr. Parasol in Central Park. Above all else, Mr. Parasol is my biggest cheerleader and my best friend. But even though I'm thrilled to be marrying him, I wasn't always totally on board with this whole wedding thing and at first, I wanted to run off and elope. I've finally been convinced to throw the wedding I never thought I wanted, and so now I'm busy planning an intimate September wedding filled with DIY details. Along the way, I'm slowly learning to appreciate, perhaps even love the wedding planning process.
About Mrs. Parasol

After our wedding-invitation disaster, Mr. Parasol and I had to make a decision: Should we send out the invitations we had, mistakes and all, or go back to the drawing board, fix the invitation suite, and then reprint everything? Mr. Parasol ultimately made the decision for us: we were going to fix and reprint all of our invitations. We just couldn’t send out the invitations as they were. We’d worked too hard on our DIY invitations to send out something we weren’t happy with and, thankfully, there was room in the budget for us to “splurge” on this.

And as if (almost) starting from scratch wasn’t complicated enough, we had to decide who would take charge of bringing this DIY project to completion: me or Mr. Parasol. You see, we printed our first invitation suite the day before Mr. Parasol left for Southern California. The original plan was to print the invitations and assemble them together. Obviously this was no longer on option. Either the invitation supplies stayed with me, or Mr. Parasol took them with him and finished them on his own.

We went back and forth for a while. I was the driving force behind the invitations at the beginning. I designed them almost entirely by myself, and I had a very clear vision of how the entire suite would look. Mr. Parasol, on the other hand, handled a larger portion of the reformatting tasks because he’s much more tech savvy than I am.

We ultimately came to a sort of compromise: Mr. Parasol would take the invitations and all the supplies with him to Southern California and reprint and assemble the suite, but not without my approval via Skype. We were dead-set on not repeating our previous mistake, and Mr. Parasol would not reprint all the invitations until we had a mock-up we both approved. I also gave Mr. Parasol detailed instructions for how to assemble the invitations, and we crossed our fingers that this time things would actually work out.

Hive, I’m happy to report that they did! Mr. Parasol did several mock-ups, he showed each one to me, we continued to tweak, and then, finally, we had a mock-up we were totally and completely happy with. Commence printing of the greatest DIY invitations ever made!

OK, not really, but I do fancy them quite a bit.

But before the big Parasol invitations reveal, check out this sneak peek of Mr. Parasol assembling our awesome DIY invitations.

Throughout it all, Mr. Parasol was a total champ. I still can’t believe I was lucky enough to find a man who not only listened to my complaints about our first batch of wedding invitations, but who also worked so unceasingly to bring my vision to life. As you can probably tell from the pictures, bringing this project to completion was no easy task. But Mr. Parasol did it, and he never once complained.

I know you’re probably on pins and needles to see the final result. Don’t worry, pictures of our completed invitation suite are coming soon!

Has your fiancé(e) helped with any DIY projects?

That is awesome, ironically Mr. Ticket was just helping me with our own invitations last night haha. So glad your invitations turned out as you hoped in the end. Can’t wait to see them! On a side note… love the wooden table in those pictures.

I had similar issues with my DIY invitations, which were designed by my FBIL who is a professional graphic designer but who did not take the project as seriously as I would’ve liked. My FI was so sweet, he worked very hard to get them right after a ton of mistakes and did all the wax seals on the outer envelope and he took them to the post office to have them hand cancelled :)

Such a lucky lady!!!!
My FI and I have an agreement: he’ll deal with the kids and the house, and bring me food/drinks and I’ll do the DIY stuff.
Otherwise, there would be many mistakes and unusable items.
However, when it comes to the food and drinks for the wedding, I step to the side and deal with the kids and everything while HE handles the buying and/or fixing.
See, we already compromise and make truces! LOL!

@Miss Ticket: Yay for FIs who help with invitations! And other wedding projects. :) The wooden table is pretty awesome–it belongs to Mr. P’s dad and stepmom, and it’s seriously the best family dinner table ever!
@Miss Pony: Aww, you’re too sweet! And obviously I agree. :)
@DaniSue13: Oh, I’m so sorry you also had trouble with your invites! It’s so stressful. But I’m glad your FI was so helpful! And you’re definitely ahead of us on the hand canceling–we just didn’t have the energy for that at the end.
@Ryna: I love the situation you and your FI have worked out! It’s all about communicating and dividing the tasks in a way that works for both of you. That’s why Mr. P is the cook in our house, and I do all the dishes!
@Mrs. Elephant: Oh my word, no! But doing your own cutting saves a ton of money, so I was thankful Mr. P did it. He also cut all of our guestbook notecards. He’s unstoppable!
@Mrs. Tartlet: I want to know what Mr. P wins when he racks up enough points! :) And I can’t WAIT to finally show you all the finished product. I’m biased, but the invites are pretty awesome. Some guests may or may not have told us that they are the best invitations ever.

@JD: Thanks so much! The assembly process was a lot of work, but surprisingly, so much easier than getting the actual invites printed! Now that was stressful! :)
@Mrs. Starfish: Thank you! I certainly think so. :)
@Miss Macarons: I can’t wait to show you all! I’m on pins and needles myself!
@Rachie: Soon, soon!

I can’t wait to see the finished product! You’re so lucky to have an FI who not only says he cares about things getting done for the wedding, but will take matters into his own hands to make it happen.
