Mrs. Hyena's Picture
Mrs. Hyena, College Station, TX Age and Occupation: 23, Marketing Specialist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Aerospace Engineering Grad Student Engagement Date: January 8, 2010 Wedding Date: May 2011 Venue: Downtown 202 About Me: I'm a Texas girl who met my future hubby in high school, then headed up to Oklahoma for a college education (BOOMER SOONER!) before moving back to the Lone Star State to be with him. I love reading and recycling, Photoshop and reality TV, making lame jokes and then laughing at them, quoting movies, and Mr. Hyena most of all. I'm perpetually early and I like to get things accomplished. When my cat meows at me, I meow back. We're planning a laid-back, unintentionally DIY wedding with a cocktail-party vibe, and can't wait to celebrate our nuptials with our nearest and dearest!
About Mrs. Hyena

Like Mrs. Cardigan, one of the things we decided to include in our wedding is the Texas A&M Aggie War Hymn. I couldn’t find a great video of it, but you can get a good idea from this clip, in case you’re not familiar with it:

When the War Hymn comes on, all the Aggies sing at the top of their lungs and sway back and forth, “sawing off” the horns of the Texas Longhorns.

This is a big deal at Aggie weddings.

Mr. Hyena originally wasn’t sure he wanted to include it, and I looked at him like, “Dude. You’re going to want the Aggie War Hymn.”

Sure enough, a few weeks before the wedding he started to get excited about it, and I was glad I had planned for it ahead of time!

A lot of Aggies stayed through to the end of the reception to participate!

I’m not an Aggie, but I figured I could join in since I just married one. :) I don’t know the words, so I just swayed when everyone else did.

Not to be outdone, when the War Hymn was over my OU friends shouted, “BOOMER!” and I responded “SOONER!”

Are you including any traditions from your alma mater?

You know your man so well Hyena. He looks like he’s loving this tradition!

My fiance is an Aggie too. We compromised– we’re going to the first game of the season instead of doing it at the wedding. Boy they love that hymn though!

@Lone Star: No kidding! I asked Mr. H why they sing about the Longhorns no matter that team they’re playing, and he didn’t have a good answer. :)

We definitely had a lot of references to our alma mater (Notre Dame). We got married at the church on campus, and our guest book was a replica of the famous “Play Like a Champion Today” sign, which we had our guests sign. My husband was in the Glee Club, so his buddies put on an impromptu concert that included the victory march and the alma mater.

You know, I went to university, I enjoyed it, I got my degree…. but it isn’t a part of my life any more. I was never in to any of the sports, I never went to any sort of game… and I think that’s where people get that intense passion for their alma mater/teams.
I guess I’m such a non-sports person that I never connected with that part of it.

I still feel a much bigger connection to my high school than my university, I really feel like high school formed and molded me. (I went to boarding school, so that experience was really like most people’s first experiences of college, only 5 years early!) The school hymn would have had 4 of us belting it out if we’d played it at the wedding, but everyone else would have been very confused.

Whoop over here, too. :) We did it at our wedding and then took an Aggie ring picture afterwards.

Haha, I have been to so many weddings where they have done this and I was so confused! Then again, I have also been to weddings where they shout Boomer Sooner. :)

I can’t wait to have pictures like those! My FI and I were both in the Corps (and I, the Aggie band). Standing in that circle with our best friends brings me near tears every time! I can’t even imagine how wonderful it will feel on my wedding day.

@Mrs. Cinnamon Bun: Aggies are known for that “intense passion”–love for sports or not! We have identical Aggie rings (except size and class year) and wear them til the day we die. For me, the ring is a way to recognize and give honor to the place that changed my life so much, and as a way to form bonds with those who experienced the same thing. Aggies are a bit crazy, I’ll admit :)

Mr. H looks like he’s having a blast. :) In retrospect, we could have incorporated the UM fight song somehow–so many of our friends are HUGE football fans!

LOL Ok now that is beyond awesome. I am not even sure I remember my alma mater’s fight song.

Such an awesome tradition. Mr. CukeSammie and I both went to school and worked at our college after graduation so we have really strong ties. I am trying to convince him to use the fight song as a recessional but he isn’t excited about it…. I have no idea why :(
