Underskirt Oomph

The hive has always been a resource of amazingly creative ideas for personalising your wedding. The amount of innovative DIY and artistic resourcefulness found here is staggering!

Pre-Weddingbee, I had never heard of a bride wearing anything besides the standard white petticoat. But when I stumbled upon coloured crinolines in the forums, I knew they screamed “Miss Funnel Cake”.

Just look at that. Ah-mah-zing.

They happen to have been done in all sorts of colors too. Oh happy day!

What a subtle flirty way to show your personality! I immediately thought of how perfect it would be to have a bright red underskirt to match Mr. Funnel Cake’s tie… and give my traditional white dress that fiery twist I was contemplating with my original dress crush.

But now I’m in a little DIY dilemma. My Sabelle dress requires a 4-ring hoop skirt, which is only one layer of material. The hoops shape the skirt, but the dress is on the verge of being too short, so I can’t puff the skirt out too much without raising my hemline too high.

Underskirt Oomph : wedding accessories columbus wedding dress 10181 1018

You can see that I’ve got all the hoops set fairly small. (Don’t mind the lipstick. It’s leftover from the work day…)

I’m not sure if one layer of red is enough to give me the playful shock of colour I’d like when I swish my skirt. So I did what any fanatic bride does and I bought a second underskirt… this time a petticoat with lots of tulle!

Underskirt Oomph : wedding accessories columbus wedding dress 20101 2010

This petticoat kind of overdid it. There’s no way I can put this petticoat over my hoop skirt without raising my hemline too high. I’ve even removed a layer of tulle at the top that was just too much bulk.

See how much I trimmed off?

So, I have two options bees:

Underskirt Oomph : wedding accessories columbus wedding dress 3010 3010

1. Colour and wear only the hoop skirt and hope it gives the colourful crinoline effect I’m after. (Let my legs enjoy the room down under.)

Underskirt Oomph : wedding accessories columbus wedding dress 4010 4010

2. Colour both underskirts and wear the fluffy petticoat with tulle underneath the hoop skirt. (And hope that the extra fabric around my legs doesn’t overheat me in October!)

Upon further inspection, I have determined that petticoat #1 is entirely polyester, which I’m not sure is capable of being dyed… at all. But petticoat #2 is entirely nylon. Maybe it’s fate narrowing down my options…

Which option would you choose? Has anyone coloured their hoop skirt or do brides doing this look always choose crinoline with tulle and lots of layers?

What if you just ditched the hoop skirt? And used only the petticoat? I’d find a seamstress friend who can give you better advice, but I don’t think the hoopskirt will give you the look you’re going for. You need the tulle. Veil Glueck!

I have no advice, I just want to say I love this look and I can’t wait to see red peeking out under your pretty dress!

Have you considered adding a few layers of fluffy red tulle at the bottom of your hoopskirt–from the last hoop down? Maybe that would give you the puffy, crinkly fullness at the hem for those adorable peeking slip shots without weighing you down or making your dress too short.

Dyed crinoline has been in my wedding inspiration folder for a long time, and I am absolutely in love with the pop of color. I’m hoping to be able to do one blue. I don’t have a dress yet, but it’s something I’m going to keep in mind.

Dye both and then bring them to a dress fitting and see what works with the dress, and then make a decision.

I have nothing to add (although I love colored crinoline!) except GO BUCKEYES.

I know a girl who had a red petticoat under her dress. I’m pretty sure all she did was get some red tulle and stitch it to the bottom of her petticoat, and it was enough.

I LOVE the look of a colored crinoline, but I may be borrowing one from a family friend. If I were buying my own, though, I’d be seriously considering dying it pink :)

Does anyone think it would it look silly if i used a blush pink one in one of these dresses? because if i did, i’m buying one on etsy, and I don’t want to waste money.

I don’t know anything about dying things so I can’t be of any help to you…. BUT I love love love the idea of dyed crinoline/petticoats!! The little bit of crinoline I have is attached to my dress so I can’t dye mine but I have serious envy of people who have that little pop of color under their dress. If you can do it, I TOTALLY would!

PS… I believe Mrs. Cola had a tutorial on how she dyed her rehearsal dinner dress after the event and I think it was mixed material so perhaps that could offer some insight on how to dye either of your difficult materials?

These are some amazing wedding photos. I can’t believe how nice those dresses look. If I had only known 18 months sooner!

I love all the colors! Great idea! Who says a wedding dress has to be all white?

@CameraGirl87: I’m afraid to ditch the hoop skirt because it really keeps a lot of the weight of the dress off me. I think if I had no hoops and extra tulle around me on top of the dress, my legs would be crushed by fabric. :P

@thirdtimebride: That sounds like a good idea. If only buying tulle weren’t like $40 a yard in Switzerland. :(

@mariewest: I won’t have any dress fittings or see the gown again until the wedding day, but I will do something and make the decision when I see the dress again. :)

@eimaj111683: Aw, you could try uploading them to a site like imageshack and then posting a link?

@KristenGettingMarried: Haha, OH!!

@SadieBee: Aw, they are only like $30 off Ebay. Make you could still get your own and dye it pink if you really want!

@calypso0712: Hmm… I reread Cola’s post on dying and it DID mention dye that works for polyester… but her polyester still turned out light. I might dye the tulle/nylon petticoat first and see if that’s enough red and keep the white hoop skirt on top…

@CameraGirl87: Yeah, I definitely love Mrs. Poodle’s purple. :)

You may want to try iDye poly http://www.dharmatrading.com/html/eng/5590684-AA.shtml it’s specially made for polyester fabrics and claims to be easy to use. Sherry from Young House Love did a tutorial for dying chair covers with this product and noted that she got it from Joanne’s so if you can’t find it in Switzerland, I imagine someone could get you a few packages of red and mail them over quite cheaply.
P.S. I’m going to be in Basel next weekend (Aug. 19-21), have you been there, any recommendations? I’ll have about 5 hours of exploring on my own while DH is at his soon to be office.
