The hive has always been a resource of amazingly creative ideas for personalising your wedding. The amount of innovative DIY and artistic resourcefulness found here is staggering!
Pre-Weddingbee, I had never heard of a bride wearing anything besides the standard white petticoat. But when I stumbled upon coloured crinolines in the forums, I knew they screamed “Miss Funnel Cake”.
Just look at that. Ah-mah-zing.

They happen to have been done in all sorts of colors too. Oh happy day!

What a subtle flirty way to show your personality! I immediately thought of how perfect it would be to have a bright red underskirt to match Mr. Funnel Cake’s tie… and give my traditional white dress that fiery twist I was contemplating with my original dress crush.
But now I’m in a little DIY dilemma. My Sabelle dress requires a 4-ring hoop skirt, which is only one layer of material. The hoops shape the skirt, but the dress is on the verge of being too short, so I can’t puff the skirt out too much without raising my hemline too high.
You can see that I’ve got all the hoops set fairly small. (Don’t mind the lipstick. It’s leftover from the work day…)
I’m not sure if one layer of red is enough to give me the playful shock of colour I’d like when I swish my skirt. So I did what any fanatic bride does and I bought a second underskirt… this time a petticoat with lots of tulle!
This petticoat kind of overdid it. There’s no way I can put this petticoat over my hoop skirt without raising my hemline too high. I’ve even removed a layer of tulle at the top that was just too much bulk.
See how much I trimmed off?
So, I have two options bees:
1. Colour and wear only the hoop skirt and hope it gives the colourful crinoline effect I’m after. (Let my legs enjoy the room down under.)
2. Colour both underskirts and wear the fluffy petticoat with tulle underneath the hoop skirt. (And hope that the extra fabric around my legs doesn’t overheat me in October!)
Upon further inspection, I have determined that petticoat #1 is entirely polyester, which I’m not sure is capable of being dyed… at all. But petticoat #2 is entirely nylon. Maybe it’s fate narrowing down my options…
Which option would you choose? Has anyone coloured their hoop skirt or do brides doing this look always choose crinoline with tulle and lots of layers?
