After collecting a bunch of green vases and milk glass pieces I was really content with myself, but I knew I didn’t have a clear plan. I needed a way to pull everything together and add some dimension to our tables. I wanted to include a mirror not only to hold our components, but to reflect the romantic glow of the candles on our tables. I figured I could go to a craft store, pick up some of craft mirrors and be done.
But, this 8″ x 10″ mirror was the largest I could find (I needed something larger for a vase, two pieces of milk glass and candles) and the beveled edges were doing nothing for me.
Out of this dilemma, I took a fugly dresser mirror that I have had for a long time but rarely use due to its looks and decided to spruce it up with some pretty silver spray paint that is more in line with our colors.
Not the offending mirror, but close enough. Pony kitty says “heyyy bees”.
Although this gave us yet another thing to find and collect within four months of the wedding, I loved the look and decided our tables needed some dresser mirrors (some call them mirrored trays, same thing) to tie everything together.
We’re still working on procuring the remaining mirrors, but here’s some of them we’ve completed so far and some detail shots:
We also have a few old dresser mirrors that we will not be spray painting (since they’re old and thus more valuable with their original paint), but will serve as backups in case we have too few or one of the Pony kitties knock one down (again) and causing (another) one to break. They’re gold, but I’m telling myself no one will notice in the dimly lit ballroom.
I use the top one to hold my perfumes!
And, if you’re interested in doing something similar, the former style of dresser mirror makes it incredibly easy to remove the mirror so you can paint only the metal instead of taping off the mirror and hoping your spray paint doesn’t find a way onto the mirror portion (this method never works for me).
Mirrors usually come with either removable pins that are embedded into side that holds the mirror in place that can easily be taken out with a flat head screwdriver and hammer…
…Or with metal feet that bend to allow the mirror to come out (just make sure not to bend them too much or they’ll fall off for good).
After all this collecting, you deserve a prize. How about a mock up with everything pulled together in the next post?
