Mrs. Parasol's Picture
Mrs. Parasol, San Ramon, California Age and Occupation: 25, Non-profit writer, editor, and blogger Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Law school student Engagement Date: December 19th, 2010 Wedding Date: September 2011 Venue: Bent Creek Winery (Livermore, California); Reception: Family Residence (San Ramon, California) About Me: I am a California girl at heart. I love the outdoors, sunny days at the beach, and hiking in the woods and mountains. I also love good books and am fresh from completing my Master's degree in English and Comparative Literature in New York City. Living in NYC was an amazing experience, and while I'm glad to be back on the West Coast, I'm also thankful that my two years back East gave me an opportunity to explore new places, make new friends, and indulge my passion for Broadway shows. Oh, and I received a pretty awesome proposal from Mr. Parasol in Central Park. Above all else, Mr. Parasol is my biggest cheerleader and my best friend. But even though I'm thrilled to be marrying him, I wasn't always totally on board with this whole wedding thing and at first, I wanted to run off and elope. I've finally been convinced to throw the wedding I never thought I wanted, and so now I'm busy planning an intimate September wedding filled with DIY details. Along the way, I'm slowly learning to appreciate, perhaps even love the wedding planning process.
About Mrs. Parasol

Like most newlyweds, Mr. Parasol and I are excited about building a home together after we get married.

For us, though, this step is particularly exciting because Mr. Parasol and I have never lived together before, so our newlywed home will be our first home. The decision to not live together before marriage was a very personal one, and one that we made after a lot of careful discussion. But even though this was the right decision for us, we are beyond thrilled that, in just over a month, we finally get to start making our first home together. After three years and nine months, we are so ready.

Anyway, Mr. Parasol headed to Los Angeles a few weeks ago in the hopes of finding the perfect newlywed apartment for us. We’ve both had a lot of experience with apartment hunting in the past, and so we know that it is never easy. It always takes much longer to find that perfect place, and the whole process is usually pretty riddled with stress. For any of you who’ve lived in the Bay Area or New York City, I’m sure you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Given our experiences in the past, as well as the fact that we are moving to another populous city, Mr. Parasol and I assumed that this particular trip would be the first of many. Imagine my surprise when he called me in the middle of the afternoon and said, “I think I found us an apartment.” I was pretty apprehensive at first. Maybe he found us an apartment, but did he actually find us the apartment?

Well, let’s see how this apartment stacks up against our requirements. Here are our apartment must-haves:

  • Parking space
  • Garbage disposal
  • Second bedroom OR extra space for Mr. Parasol to have a study nook
  • Plenty of closet space (I basically told Mr. Parasol that I wanted a full closet to myself.)
  • Full shower with bathtub
  • Lots of natural light
  • Decent sized kitchen
  • A living area that is big enough to serve as a living room and dining room
  • No more than $1,500/month total
  • Close to UCLA campus
  • Safe, nice, and relatively quiet neighborhood

We were also crossing our fingers for a dishwasher and a washer and dryer, but those weren’t actual requirements for us.

Here’s what the apartment has:

  • Garage parking space
  • Garbage disposal (I’ve never lived in an apartment with one! Score!)
  • Den
  • Kitchen closet, linen closet, and huge walk-in closet in the bedroom that has more than enough space for both of us
  • Shower and tub with a glass shower door (No more shower curtains!)
  • Lots of natural light and a patio
  • Large kitchen with lots of counter space and cabinets
  • Gigantic living area
  • In the $1,300/month range
  • About a five-minute walk to UCLA
  • Gorgeous neighborhood that is right across the street from a large cemetery, so our neighbors are very quiet
  • A dishwasher!
  • Laundry facilities on every floor

I heard all of this, and like Mr. Parasol, I was pretty much sold. Then he told me that there is an In-N-Out Burger two blocks away, and I knew this apartment was destined to be our first home. A few hours later, Mr. Parasol filled out all the paperwork and dropped off the security deposit and first month’s rent, and the apartment was ours.

Thankfully, I was able to make a trip to Southern California to see Mr. Parasol and attend another friend’s wedding recently and, while down there, I visited our apartment. I forgot to take pictures when we actually moved Mr. Parasol’s things into the apartment, so it’s very sparse, but still full of possibilities.

And so, hive, I welcome you to Casa Parasol!

Silly Mr. Parasol!/ Personal photo

Mr. Parasol and I know that this is far from the nicest or fanciest apartment ever, and it’s certainly not where we want to stay long term. But right now, none of that matters. This apartment is all ours, and we can’t wait to make it into our very first home. And some awesome wedding pictures would really jazz this place up, don’t you think?

Now it’s your turn, hive! Tell me about the first home you shared with your significant other!

That’s so exciting! The first place you share together is always so special! Our first place was a barn that FI had converted into a house (sounds weird but it was really neat). He had lived there for a long time, I moved in when I got pregnant. It was a one bedroom so our son spent his first two years sleeping in the living room! We built a new house and moved out but I will always treasure the memories we made in that home!

That is awesome! To find an apartment that meets all of your criteria for that price in LA is truly impressive. I really hope Mr. Ticket and I are able to find something similar in our area, we hope to start looking in another month.

I think a new BBQ would be a lovely addition to your registry….(or a gift card from Home Depot) :-)

Wow that is a lot of cabinets! Actually more than my condo has now.

Check your lease before buying that BBQ. Everywhere I rented and my condo that I own now prohibit gas or charcoal BBQs and only allow electric. :(

I soooo love you guys! Congratulations, Miss Parasol on your new place!!! We haven’t lived together either so we are very excited to have our first home together! We just signed the lease on our first place too! It’s a two bedroom - perfrect for my honey’s sewing stuff (he’s a fashion designer!) and it’s big enough for me to spread out with my stuff…i’m a legal writer. It has a garage space, lots of storage space and great light.

Congrats on your first place together! I’m jealous of your dishwasher-I’ve never had one in a place I’ve lived since I moved out of my parents!

@Mrs. Tartlet: I know–we’re so lucky! And yay for dishwashers! I have lived for too long without one.
@legallyengaged: Good tip on the BBQ! We’ll definitely look into it before we purchase one. :)
@Miss Honey: I know! I’m all jealous that Mr. P is moved in and I still have to wait.
@soon to-be-mrs: Aww, you’re so sweet! And congrats on getting your first place as well! It’s so exciting. And I’m just a little jealous of the second bedroom, though I am very thankful for our den. :)
@Mrs. Pin Cushion: I hear you! This is my first apartment with a dishwasher, and I am so excited! I hate doing dishes!

I love it - way to find something that scored on all your points THEN some! It’s a great feeling, isn’t it? And you two are so cute showing off your digs. And dishwashers are awesome. I miss them.

Haha I love this! Very similar to Mr. EB and I when we were looking for our first place. Now we’re looking for our third? fourth? (dear lord I can’t wait until we stop moving every year!) and as much as I hate apartment hunting, I do love looking at every place through the eye of how to make it into a home!

Walk-in closet? 5 mins from campus? $1300/mo?! I’d say Mr. P found an AMAZING deal. Oh, and I also absolutely love that there are laundry facilities on EACH floor! Congrats, pretty lady :)

Congrats on finding a new place! I wish the two of you (youse guys in NYC-ese) the best of happiness and joy.
My sweetie and I decided not to live together until after we’re married. It’s important to us but got a lot of strange looks from others. He did help me pick out the house I’m about to buy knowing that’s where he’ll live after we say “I Do”
