Engagement-Photo Backdrop

August 11th, 2011 @ 8:41 am by Mrs. Ticket

When we first booked our photographers, I knew I wanted us to have an engagement session. I know Mr. Ticket, and the odds of us having professional photos taken together after the wedding were pretty much zip. So this was a great opportunity to have some nice pictures of us that aren’t from the wedding!

So now it was just time to decide on wardrobe and location. Let’s start with location.

We figured we would most likely take pictures at the usual places—a park or the beach. They are standards for a reason: they produce pretty pictures! But while I was looking at other people’s engagement pictures for inspiration, I ran into these…

SOLD! After seeing these, there was no way I could settle for the beach or a park. You might not recognize the backdrop of these amazing photos but, having grown up a Disney child in Southern California, I sure did. These pictures were taken at Disneyland! (It’s the first place Mr. Ticket and I ever went together—we don’t call it our first date as both of our mothers decided to go the same day even though we spent 90% of the day apart.) I immediately starting researching the cost of tickets. That dream ended quickly. It was going to cost us $350 for our tickets as well as the photographers’ and parking just to get into Disneyland. Then there was the added complication of Disney’s vague photographer policy: “no professional looking cameras.”

But I LOVED the theme-park background and the funness of the pictures. I desperately wanted to capture that laid-back, fun atmosphere. Then it hit me…Knotts Berry Farm, another theme park Mr. Ticket and I had visited in our early dating days. It was significantly cheaper ($114 for all four of us and no parking fees since we went later in the day), and they had a much more relaxed photographer policy. I immediately emailed our photographers to see if they would be up for it. They agreed!

Next up was wardrobe. I had originally wanted to wear bright colors, but after seeing these pictures I fell in love with the girl’s dress. On a total whim, I attempted to contact Beautiful Day Photography through their blog site and see if anyone knew where she got the dress. They actually got back to me within a week! I was so stoked. They told me that she had gotten the dress at Windsor about two years ago and, while they didn’t still sell that dress, they had similar ones. So I decided to go on the hunt for a similar dress. Since my wedding dress isn’t white (more on that epicness later!), I really want to wear a white dress for the rehearsal dinner, and I figured maybe I could wear it for engagement photos, too!

I checked Windsor online and didn’t see any dresses I loved. So Mr. Ticket and I went to the mall one evening and headed for Macy’s first. I picked out three white dresses and hit the dressing rooms. I walked out to model each one for Mr. Ticket, and he picked the winner (which also happened to be my favorite), and he even bought it for me! Sorry I don’t have pictures of it from the store. But you will get to see it with our engagement-picture shots! I went to J.C. Penney the next day and picked out a shirt for Mr. Ticket. I called it the “wishful hope shirt” since it was a size smaller than he normally wears, but it fit him perfectly! I swear I didn’t pick his shirt to match the one from the pictures above—the one I picked was the only shirt they had that didn’t look exactly like ones he already owned.

Did you decide to go a more unique route with your engagement photos? Did your SO pick your outfit?

I didn’t know Disney had such a strict camera policy, weird. I can’t wait to see the photos from Knotts Berry Farm, it sounds adorable!

From what I understood (I’ve read the Disney Wedding Blog a lot haha) Disneyland is fair game for bringing in photographers, but Disney World has a policy of no “working” professional photographers. I have an SLR and I bring it with a full tripod and 5 lenses on every trip and it’s certainly allowed… they just don’t want people getting professional photos being done (so I charge my friends and family for the photos I take of them haha). That being said, I see it alllllll the time. Seriously, a couple in the middle of Epcot wearing a fancy dress and heels and a shirt and tie taking kissing photos for hours with a photographer with 3 full SLR cameras following them around isn’t fooling anyone haha. They’re def. lax with the rule! (although you risk getting kicked out I guess). But like I said, there is no such policy at Disneyland :)

This is the official word from Disneyland:

“You can bring an outside photographer in to do a professional session as long as the photographer only brings a camera. Large equipment, such as screens and additional lighting, aren’t allowed because they get in the way of other guests. Also, outside photographers aren’t allowed to rope off areas or do anything that interferes with someone else’s vacation.”

Those are great inspiration pictures! What I think makes great engagement pictures is when they tell about the personality of the couple or the story of their relationship. So I think the park is great since you guys frequent them…I can’t wait to see how your pics come out.

Yes, you can definitely take your engagement photos at Disneyland. We sure did =)

We did get stopped by a security guard, but he just wanted to make sure the photographer wasn’t using the photos for his company’s advertisement? or something like that. Once we said we were engaged and the photographer was “just our friend” he lightened up and started congratulating us. All the workers that we passed by would just smile and congratulate us, it was pretty obvious we were there for some sort of wedding related photography as I had a white dress on and full blown hair and make up =)

Such fun inspiration! Glad you were able to find an equally sentimental location for your engagement photos (what a bizarre phrase for Disney’s photographer policy!).

We did ours at a pumpkin patch and a hay ride. They turned out so well. The colors really popped, orange of the pumpkins and the blue sky. I could not have asked for better engagement pictures.

I love the idea of a Disney engagement session, if only I lived nearby.

@zippitydoodah - That is awesome! Where did you find that official Disneyland statement? I was only going off of what I had read on numerous forums and blogs. While obviously some people manage to pull it off successfully (hence my inspiration photos) I read many horror stories of people being kicked out of the park for having ‘professional’ looking cameras.

@bonsai_spork - Your pictures turned out great! I especially love number 8.

@yellowshoe - LOVE YOUR PICTURES! Ohmygosh they turned out so amazing. I’m so glad Disney let you stay to take those without giving you any grief. I know Disney is quite nice about engaged couples, when Mr. Ticket and I went to Downtown Disney to pick up our cake topper the store employee gave us free Buttons that said the date we got engaged and ‘Happily Ever After’ on them.

@Rose_Dust - That is the cutest idea! I love pumpkin patches it would be such a great backdrop for photos.

@CurlyRN - I think the bowling alley idea is a fantastic one! http://www.hollycarlylephotography.com/Blog/?tag=bowling-alley

@Miss Ticket:

I can’t see that being true, since I belong to a group of about 70 people who share an interest in Disney photography (I know… I’m a big dork haha). We take photography trips to Disney World and it ends up being about 10-20 people together with TONS of cameras and equipment (I’m talking $5000 cameras and $2000 lenses) and have never had an issue. In fact, I would say about 1 in 10 people have an SLR in general at Disney since they’re so common now. We even have stayed up to an hour after the park closes before we get kicked out just to take photos and have never had an issue. Definitely nothing wrong with have a nice camera at either Disney World or Disneyland, its just at Disney World you can’t be taking them for money.

I got that info from the Disney Wedding Blog… the author contacted Disney for the official word from them. So Disneyland you can totally go get family portraits or whatever done, and Disney World is the only place you have to be careful, but even then its not the camera but the context that you would be taking the (small) risk. Hope that helps! Disneyland officially says its ok at their park though to take engagement photos :)

So ya, Disneyland area brides are a-ok, but Disney World brides should be warned that there is a risk of being booted :) (which I still think would be worth it hehe… I wish I lived closer!)

Oh, and we got engaged at Disney and were treated SO nicely that we decided to have our honeymoon there as well. Everyone made such a big deal (since we had the buttons so everyone knew we were just engaged), we got free desserts, got to skip line ups, free champagne, etc… they know how to treat people well! They already gave us “just married” and “1 year anniversary” buttons and told us we have to come back to celebrate those too haha.

I ended up picking my dress for our e-pics from Macy’s too! I thought about going for white, but instead went for the color I wanted for our wedding, but changed away from. Funny how we use e-pics to fulfill color choices we passed on in other wedding decisions?
