The Smell of Memories

August 12th, 2011 @ 11:26 am by Mrs. Teaspoon

How often have you smelt the rain before it rains, or realised there were ants around because you could smell them, or smelt your man after a long day and thought that he smelt more amazing than when he left that morning? (OK, I’m pretty sure that last one is called pheromones—whoops.)

Smell is very important to me. I didn’t realise how much it was until I had been away from home for about two months and my mum sent me over a care package with the typical Caramello Koalas, Tim Tams, Natural Confectionery Company jellies, and a whole batch of Bonds undies! I don’t know what I had done, but I’m pretty certain it involved a dryer being on too hot and ending up with toasted undies! I was in a small ski resort and we only had Wal-mart, which was a 30-minute bus ride away—not many undies options. So, Mum bought me some undies, and she threw in some new T-shirts and tracksuit pants as well. (I’m pretty sure she missed me…) When the package arrived, I opened it and I was still sitting there 10 minutes later when my roommate came in and saw me bawling my eyes out. The clothes Mum and Dad had send smelt like home! I wasn’t really homesick—I was having a great time skiing and partying all the time! I think the overwhelming smell of home was something I simply wasn’t expecting! It smelt like my parents, my home, my two dogs, the beach, and I’m sure some eucalyptus was mixed in there!

Even now, I have my “holiday” perfume—I buy myself a new perfume before a big trip and then when we get home all I have to do is put that perfume on and I am back on the beach in Positano, climbing the Eiffel tower, or skiing in Telluride!

So, what day would I want to simply transport myself back to with the spray of a bottle? You guessed it—my wedding day! So I am agonising over the decision of which perfume to buy.

I have of course looked at the Vera Wang range, but it is so difficult to tell. I decided I needed to limit myself to one smell a day, so I spent the better part of two hours in the duty-free perfume section a few months ago waiting for a delayed flight to New Zealand. (Three-hour flight and you get to buy duty free—excellent! I’m pretty sure that is the sole reason New Zealand isn’t just another state of Australia…I’m just KIDDING, Kiwis—Mrs. Earrings may just kill me for saying that.) I made myself dizzy and completely immune to all future smells!

So, every time I went by a perfume counter, I would try one and it would either go on the list or be a big fat scratch-off! Then, completely unexpectedly, I was at a friend’s birthday party and gave another friend a hug and a kiss to say hi, and her perfume was PERFECT! It smelled exactly how I would want to smell! Subtle flowers and oh so sweet!

So off I went, down to Myer, and picked up this little beauty:

It is an added bonus that the bottle is ridiculously cute and will look beautiful for photos of my accessories! Wow, you know you are a blogger bride when you are thinking about your accessories photos to show your blog followers!

I am having to keep it sealed in the box to ensure that I don’t use it before the big day! I might be able to convince myself to use it for the rehearsal, maybe the hen’s…but not before!! Well, I should check that I still smell nice with my hair and makeup…??? Yes, best to keep that baby sealed away!

How did you decide on your wedding-day scent?

Oh, if only I could wear perfume, but I have a terrible perfume allergy. And of course, I only discovered this after I finally decided on “my scent” and bought a whole bunch of it. After a few days of watering eyes and a terribly itchy nose, I gave all my perfume to my sister and haven’t worn it since. I guess a good scrub with soap and water and some deodorant will be my wedding day “scent!”

I used to wear perfume regularly, but in the months leading up to the wedding I stopped for some reason. Even though I brought my bottle of Chanel Coco Mademoiselle with me, I forgot to spritz some on!

I LOVE Marc Jacobs Eau So Fresh. It is amazing. Everytime I am at the mall I grab a sample. My purse is full of these samples, it’s ridiculous. I should probably just break down and buy a bottle, I think the perfume counter is catching on to me :) Good luck keeping it sealed, that’s a tough one!

I never wear perfume but I’m looking for one for the wedding, for precisely the reasons you outlined! I’ll have to look into the Marc Jacobs line too…

Hehehe, that kitty picture is hilarious. I used a perfume that I already had that I think smells romantic. Now I can’t use it without thinking about our wedding!

@Miss Parasol: I don’t know how extreme your allergy is, but have you tried Grace by Philosophy? I have several friends and even my mom who have pretty bad allergies, and this is the only scent they can wear! Might be worth at least looking into!

Such a cute bottle and box–I am such a sucker for packaging.

You might want to try it on for a day before the big wedding events (like maybe for a dress fitting or shower event) mainly because it might not smell the same on you as it did on your friend or straight from the bottle. Our body chemistry does funny stuff to some scents!

Yay for a Telluride shout out! I’m a short 3 hours from there and that is where my bachelorette party is taking place :) Fun that you were in my neck of the woods! I have no idea what I’m doing for my big day scent, I’ll add it to the list!

I love Daisy - very fresh! I went with j’adore and I can’t wear that perfume now without getting flashbacks. :)

Ah! I love daisy. I’m in the process of deciding on my wedding day perfume right now. Its been really difficult choosing. I have SO many samples now, I had to put them in a tupperware container because the smell was invading my bedroom…

I know what you mean about scent memory though. Scents are a huge part of how I remember things.

You know, I bought some for the wedding day (I think I even blogged about it) then forgot to put it on. I didn’t miss it, and I don’t regret it! And now I have a nice perfume for when I’m feeling fancy.

@thirdtimebride: Good plan, will definitely do a little spritz tomorrow at my 2nd fitting!

@Miss Honey: Telluride is awesome, considering another trip back there in 2013, might have to organise a bee meet up!

@Mrs. Jaguar: Yay, thats the plan!
