About Miss Kettle

Kettle Color Cull

August 15th, 2011 @ 11:39 am by Miss Kettle

Anyone want to say this post title three times fast? It’s hard. Hehe, I crack me up.

OK, hive. It was quite the journey to our current color palette, but I’m very happy with how it turned out. I’ve alluded to our colors here and there and mentioned some changes we went through. Ultimately, I’m very happy with how it turned out.

When Mr. Kettle first proposed, I was thinking blue. Like a nice, happy royal blue.

That didn’t last long. Mr. Kettle and I agreed to it the night we got engaged, and we told my parents the idea and they loved it. Within 24 hours, his mother Mema Kettle suggested we do more of a royal purple instead.

Everyone liked that idea, including me. I was trying to pick a color that wasn’t too feminine, but Mr. Kettle liked the idea of purple. So that became our color.

I was hesitant to nail down the rest of our colors because I knew I didn’t want a white dress, but I didn’t know what color I’d end up with. I was still thinking about that floral number. We were in color limbo for a couple weeks just on that image alone.

Luckily, Momma Kettle and I, along with FNIL Sniffles, FSIL Grand, and FSIL Hon, quickly chose a wedding dress for me. Knowing I’d have a taupe/tan/coffee/whatever dress (yes, those of you who guessed that one have yet another tip that you’re thinking of the right dress!), I was given a bit more direction for the colors.

Mr. Kettle had this tie I hated, but I noticed it was the perfect color scheme. The taupe in it perfectly matched my dress and it looked great next to black. Also, there were gold accents in the tie that matched something else: my shoes!

I saw these lovely shoes in Lord and Taylor when I was shopping for birthday shoes last October. I immediately purchased them. I danced the night away and haven’t worn them since because they’re so fancy. I brought them with me to try on with wedding dresses, and they went so well with my dress, it was an easy decision to make these my “something old”!

So we had purple, taupe/tan/coffee/whatever, and black, with gold accents. I felt like we needed to pick either white or ivory to round out the colors, but I couldn’t decide. I did know I could see a sea of white-ish roses for bouquets or decorations, so we had to pick something in that value range.

There was a purple bridesmaids’ dress in there that went perfectly with my dress; the shades were sooo complementary. That was the color I went with for my thank you wreath for our e-pics. But that color choice didn’t last long.

I’ll explain how we got away from that shade of purple when I explain how we ended up with the bridesmaids’ dresses for my ladies. But just know for now that, after searching for dresses, we changed to a magical color created by one Bill Levkoff called Regency.

That color is a magical, special color. It looks purple in real life. A beautiful, rich purple that complements the skin tones of all my girls. And bonus—it photographs blue! And the blue color that shows up in photos is very similar to the color I wanted in the first place.

I couldn’t decide between white and ivory, so I basically flipped a mental coin and picked ivory because the color felt richer and warmer, which made me feel better emotionally about the colors for our wedding.

So now, our colors are: Regency, coffee, ivory, black, and gold accents. Thanks to Adobe Kuler, I was able to play around until I got just the right colors for our color palette.

By now you’re all thinking, “Enough talking! Just show us the colors!!!” OK, here you go.

Having this palette has been super useful for things like our wedding invitations, which have just begun to be designed, yay! Also for flower choices, and to help the guys visualize what color vests they’ll be wearing. Which could be any of those. Except the gold. This isn’t the 1970s.

How did you choose your color palette? Did it change a million times?

Kettle Color Cull, Kettle Color Cull, Kettle Color Cull. Haha. I was feeling smart-alecky.
I love that regency color! I funny how one color can look like so many differnet ones depending on light! And I ‘m happy to see another bride combining a brown and black!

I just chose Regency as well - it is so hard to find anything about it online and I don’t think the computer ever accurately shows what it looks like! It is such a complimentary color on EVERYONE. Which style Bill Levkoff did you choose for your girls? I am having a heck of a time finding flower girl dresses as well. Yay for Regency!

I too love the Bill Levkoff Regency color. However, I am in a different boat. I want it to look deep purple in person and deep purple in pictures. I am accenting with lime green so I want the purple to pop.

So does it really look blue in all wedding pictures because it does on the BL website?

Help… I began to place the order and discovered this color gliche.

I just got my swatch and it looks very purple, but honestly it photographs kinda blue. Like a purple-y royal blue, but still more blue than purple. Perhaps with different lighting it would photograph purple?

Do any of you have pictures of the B.L Regency dresses? The last order for my girls are about to be placed and I’m freaking out because I want true royal purple. I do not want blue dresses in the photographs!! HELP

Okay, so the dress sample looked purple. The color swatch looked blue compared to the other purples. The sample swatch they sent me looked blue or purple depending on if I photographed it with a flash, what time of day, and what color it was next too. When the dresses arrived, everyone thought they looked waaaay more purple than expected.

I actually bought them because I wanted them to look purple and photograph blue. I just looked up some pics on facebook. The bridesmaids are holding flowers with a purple ribbon that matched pretty well to the eye, but in the photograph, the dresses looked like a purplish-blue.

So that very long answer means that the dress photographs blue. With a flash, at sunset, next to purple ribbon, it photographs blue. If you’ve ordered other purple dresses, this one won’t match. Hope that helps.

Thank you so much! It does help. I guess I can get over the dress photographing blue as long as it will look purple during the ceremony and reception in real life. It’s either that or change my colors at the last minute! I have one more question…did you get reception and ceremony decorations in dark purple? I want to make sure if I order stuff like napkins, paper lanterns, etc that the dresses won’t look strange with royal/deep purple decor.

thank you for being so helpful! I’ve been panicking!!

No, most of my stuff was that same rich royal purple color. I alternated between matte satin, shiny satin, and gauzy tulle. It all looked great. I let the girls have free reign on accessories, so accents of gold, orange, and even yellow popped up and all looked great. But for the venue, all my stuff was purple, pale green (NOT mint green), ivory, and beige. Because the ceremony was at sunset, it all worked beautifully together. If your wedding is this summer, I would suggest bolder accent colors, but don’t be afraid of using royal purple. As long as it doesn’t have a pink-ish undertone, it will be great.

Sounds awesome! My wedding is in July in the mountains outside, and ceremony is at 3pm, so I’m hoping the dresses will look closer to purple in the sun-lit photographs. I am going for a brighter green (not neon or anything weird) and ivory as my colors. Sounds like I can keep the purple decor, I’ll make sure the undertone will work.

I appreciate your help! I’m not freakin out anymore :)
