Flowers Flowers Flowers

August 16th, 2011 @ 9:44 am by Mrs. Ticket

I’m a bit ashamed to admit that I am a silk-flower snob. While I have seen plenty of weddings with exquisite silk-flower arrangements where half the guests didn’t even know they were fake, I simply hate silk flowers. This is not solely a wedding hatred—Mama Ticket LOVES silk flowers. They are all over the house in cute little vases and baskets adding pops of color everywhere. It’s not so much that I think they are all ugly. I just don’t like the feel of them and I hate that they seem to be magnets for dust. When I pick up a bouquet of flowers, I want to take a giant whiff and breathe in that glorious fresh-flower smell. Call me crazy, but even on a tight budget I knew I needed real flowers for the wedding.

But I certainly was not expecting the gloriousness that is our florist. WC set us up and, while I had heard good things about her, nothing could have prepared me for the awesomeness that was about to ensue.

I had a modest budget for flowers (and by modest I mean WC cringed in despair when she saw our numbers), and even that was set just for our personals. So when I walked into her shop and we started talking flowers, I figured we would just talk bouquets, boutonnieres, and a couple corsages and call it a day. But I was very very wrong. I went in with what I considered to be pretty solid numbers of what things were going to cost (WC had warned me in advance this florist was not the cheapest but certainly did great work), and I was comfortable with paying as much for her services. She nearly cut my numbers in half! Even working with my one and only flower demand: GERBERA DAISIES!

After seeing the miracles this woman was working with our budget, we decided to get a little brave. We showed her our budget for centerpieces and asked what she could do with it. (OK, honestly, I was so embarrassed by how low the number was she had to coerce me into telling her so she could see if there was anything she could do with it—we were planning on making the centerpieces ourselves with materials purchased from Costco.) Upon hearing our budget, she informed me that not only could she make us some decent centerpieces but also she would make them out of none other than GERBERA DAISIES! I was sold right then and there. Not only did I not have to worry about making flower arrangements one to two days before the wedding, but it’s not going to cost me a dime over budget? YES, PLEASE!

Extra bonus…the guys’ bouts will be made with mini gerbera daisies. I’m officially in super-duper like with our florist!

Since everything came in under budget, we even splurged and decided to have our fantabulous florist line the ceremony aisle with pink rose petals and mini gerbera daisies! I can’t wait to see how all our flowers turn out!

Anyone else pleasantly surprised by coming in under budget on something they never expected?

I love fresh flowers, the more the merrier in fact, but was afraid our budget was a bit too lean. Our florist really surprised me by coming in under budget without nixing my must have flowers.

This is the exact inspiration pic I gave to our florist! I wanted to only use Gerbera Daisies in our wedding, and our colors are blue and brown with a polk-a-dot theme!

I’m so glad they were able to get you the flowers you dreamed of, in the budget you needed!!

I’m the same way when it comes to silk flowers. I don’t mind them in other peoples’ weddings - I’d never go and say, wow that’s so tacky. But I didn’t want them in ours. That’s so amazing about your florist! I had a budget in mind and ours came back with a proposal that was double that … hehe. But I went with them anyway. Budget fail.

My first (certainly not the last!) color inspiration were cheery Gerbera’s!! I had no idea they had mini ones. Sounds like the floral is all wrapped up for you!

I used gerbera daises for centerpieces! We ordered them in bulk from Costco (I think it came out to just under $80 for 100 flowers), and they arrived right on time. My mom and my sister assembled the centerpieces the day before the reception, and voila! Flowers on a budget!

I will say that silkies are far from my favorite but due to budgeting I am stuck using them for bouquets. BUT, what I am finding is that our country/rustic theme is so very forgiving and that we can use fresh “wildflowers” as centerpieces/decorations. Also, the owner of the chapel (used only for weddings) fills antique vases with matching flowers and sticks them in all of the windows as her gift to the bride & groom.

While pouting over my bouquet not smelling yummy it hit me… make it a few weeks in advance, buy a sachet in my favorite smell, and lock it away in a tote. The smell should saturate the fabric and last awhile, right?!? Meltdown diverted for now! ;)
