Nailing it

August 16th, 2011 @ 3:31 pm by Mrs. Macarons

I’m Miss Macarons and I used to be a nail biter. I always assumed I’d have to get acrylics in order to have pretty nails for my wedding. Well, after 25 years of breaking, I went from nails like this:

to this:

What’s my secret other than obviously not biting?

My nails were extremely thin, so even though I stopped biting they’d peel and split at the sides before I’d get any kind of length. I tried just about every nail strengthener and growth formula on the market but nothing seemed to work. That was until I gave Nailtiques a shot. Given multiple failures and products not living up to their name I was reluctant to try another, especially one close to $20, but man, is it worth it.

If you’re a nail biter, start out with formula 2 and apply a thin coat every day. At the end of the week, take it off with a non-acetone remover, wash your hands and reapply. As your nails grow and you start to notice a difference in their strength, you can reduce your applications.

Now that my nails are healthy I use formula 1 every few days and as a base coat and top coat when I paint my nails. (Remember to keep your hands completely flat while it dries otherwise it”ll roll back onto your cuticles and cause it to peel/chip off)

If you already have long nails but want some extra insurance against accidental breaks leading up to your wedding check out a gel manicure like Gelish, Axxium or Shellac. I’m hard on my hands and have had a few crafting close calls that would have resulted in several broken nails had it not been for the stuff.

Are you doing anything special to your nails?

I swear by ORLY No Bite. It’s bitter and acts as the perfect last push to get me to stop. I also keep a nail file in my purse so that I don’t have any excuse to use my teeth. So glad you found a system that works for you!

Great post! I’ve struggled with my nails, but mostly the skin around them. I actually prefer my nails short, but it would be nice to not look like I just went through a meat grinder. I started using Sally Hansen Nail Nutrition Green Tea and Soy Cuticle Oil, plus Curel Hand and Cuticle Therapy for dry, rough hands. I try to use these two things every time I have an urge to bite. It’s slow learning, but it’s starting to improve things!

I’m going to have to give this a try. I’m trying to grow them out, but they get to a certain length and then break.

I was a nail biter until I got to college and just decided to stop so I could paint them pretty colors! I still play with them a lot though and they definitely use some strength. Never heard of this product - thanks! Yours look great!

I use MalvaStop - tastes horrible and is the only thing that gets me to quit. I have to keep it on there all the time… also use Nailtek as a base to keep them strong.

I am horrible with bitting my nails. I might have to look into this more.

i started taking flax seed pills once a day about 2 months ago and I have the longest, strongest nails I have ever had! I used to break mine all the time but now I can grow them long! Plus the flax seed makes my hair grow faster too!

Your nails look great now! (Never been a nail-biter, just had to pop in and say great job on kicking the nail-biting!)

Your nails look fabulous! Mine are super thin and prone to breaking, so I’m definitely looking into this product!

Oh thank you for sharing! I am a lifelong nail biter but I haven’t bitten my nails in almost 3 months! Yay! They are growing but are also very thin and break easily. I have been putting polish with a clear coat which keeps them from breaking for the most part.

So… I couldn’t comment right away because I was so busy ordering this item through the link you left. I can’t wait to try it since I do have problems with my nails. All except my R pinkie, how weird is that?

@Miss Bacon: I keep a nail file on me too! That way I can take care of snags and tears before they get worse.

@Miss Kettle: I’m glad you’re giving it a shot! You might want to look for it at your grocery store or drugstore, like Walgreens, since that’s where I first found it. My ring fingers and pinkies never break but they get the least amount of use.

I’ve ordered some too, and so happy I can get in Canada!

I’m not a nail biter, but my nails are so thin and weak and always break. I have never had long nails in my life! I am inspired this product will work!

Thanks so much!!!

Couldn’t help but notice…are you wearing your engagement ring on your right hand?

Wow, your nails look awesome! I find I can grow mine for about a month, then they start splitting and I have to keep cutting them super short. I should look into this stuff!

@Miss Macarons: My order just came in the mail today. I re-painted my nails using this stuff as a base and top coat and took a before picture. I can’t wait to see what it looks like in 2 wks, then 4 wks, then a couple months. Thanks so much for an awesome suggestion! I bet it will turn out well and then I’ll be posting on here myself with before and after pics. :D
