Our cake came from Sumi’s Oven. We had four square rotating layers. It had buttercream frosting. I was over the top with how the cake looked, especially since I changed my mind on the design at the last minute. When Sumi dropped off our rehearsal dinner cake the night before the wedding, I handed her two spools of that gold ribbon to put around the cake bases. I really liked the swirl pattern in the ribbon.

Stupid me didn’t realize that ribbon used on a cake should not have wire in it. The wire makes it difficult to lay flat on the frosting. Given that I was in the middle of our rehearsal, I told Sumi to just make the cake pretty. I gave her executive decision making power. She was allowed to use no ribbon, alternative gold ribbon, or the ribbon I gave her.
I could not be happier that she went with the ribbon I gave her. Even though it didn’t lay perfectly flat (as you can see in the photo above), it looked beautiful. The cake sat so far away from guests that it really didn’t matter.
To give the cake its elegance, my florist aunt placed phalaenopsis orchids cascading down the cake.
Originally, we had planned to use a family cake serving kit. When I looked at the table, I realized that I had forgotten to remind Mama-in-law to bring it. Oops. That’s what having a DOC is for. She quickly asked the restaurant staff to bring out a set for us to use, and it worked out just fine.
For added height, the cake was placed on top of square vases that had been turned upside down. I actually have those from my cousin’s centerpieces one year earlier. Clever re-use, right?
Cutting the actual cake can be awkward. Luckily, our DOC made us practice at one of our last meetings, so we knew exactly how to stand together to cut the cake. For those who haven’t tried, here is what you do. Stand prom style, with the larger person’s arm around smaller person. The person with the smaller hands holds the knife first. The other person wraps their hand around the first person’s hand.
We forgot forks as well, but that was also fine. Hands are made for these situations! Feeding each other felt so awkward. We did a quick and sweet cut, feed, and we were out!

At the start of the reception, our parents’ wedding photos were placed on the cake table. My parents’ photo is not from their wedding because they did not have a photographer. It was post-war Vietnam, after all. As the evening went on and our DIY photo booth photos were printed, our coordinator had the clever idea to add our photo to the table as well. Cute, isn’t it?
