Fiesta Shower

August 17th, 2011 @ 10:20 am by Mrs. Cannon

Mr. Cannon and I had a joint wedding shower with our friends and family back in my hometown recently. It was fiesta themed, which is a fancy way of saying there was Mexican food. We also had margaritas and my sister made us wear sombreros. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a pinata. But it was nice to get everyone together even though I was a complete wreck during the whole thing. My final project and final exam for school were due the day of my shower, so I was not focused on the party aspect.

We arrived at the same time as my grandma, her husband, and some of our friends. One of my sisters had decorated with bright colors and my other sister was making margaritas. My mom was getting all the food set up, and we got situated and started talking to our guests. It didn’t take long before Cherry Bomb grabbed my margarita off the table when I was distracted and dumped it all over both of us. (In her defense, the margaritas were in pretty hot pink glasses, so I can see why she was so excited about grabbing one.) Luckily, my cousin had some extra clothes for her daughter that I could put Cherry Bomb in, and my grandma had brought up a dress she made for me that I could change into. Then my mom went to her house and got Cherry Bomb a dress she had bought for Cherry Bomb so we were able to give my cousin back her daughter’s extra outfit. So, Cherry Bomb went through three costume changes over the course of this 2.5 hour party. Apparently she didn’t want the paparazzi catching her in the same outfit twice.

My sister claims to have invented the game she had us play first.

She called it “Race to the Altar”. You had to find something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue, and then race to the front of the room. Whoever got there first was the winner. This game was mostly a testament to my grandma’s sense of humor as multiple people used her as “something old” over the course of the game.

My sister modeling Team Grandmas’ winning look

We also did the toilet paper dress game, because it is the best game ever! My sister divided up the teams and created one team that was pretty much destined to win. Dubbed Team Grandma, it consisted of both FMIL and Mom Cannon, plus Grandma Cannon among others, so they obviously had the most design experience, and it showed. The best part of this game was definitely the part where people had to describe their look. Who would have guessed that my dad could give such an elaborate description of Team Old Guys‘ design? Or that my grandma’s husband would make such a lovely bride? Other teams tried to win by adding chest enhancements, and using super cute baby models, but Team Grandma took home the non-existent trophy because their dress was the only one not falling apart by the end of judging. I was pretty excited to be the sole judge of this contest. I only wish I wasn’t so worried about school at the time, because it would have been the perfect opportunity to whip out my Heidi Klum impression!

Team Old Guys

We did a little newlywed type game that was only moderately embarrassing, and then everyone did Bridal Bingo as we opened gifts. We got a lot of cool things, and I was overly excited about getting our toasting flutes and cake serving set, especially considering I hadn’t cared about them at all prior to doing the registry. My sister had the forethought to bring a present for Cherry Bomb to open, and she opened it first. It was a package of play food, and it kept Cherry Bomb and all the other little ones entertained during the admittedly not-that-entertaining gift opening portion.

I wasn’t kidding about my sister making us wear sombreros.

Things wrapped up after that, and I was really impressed with how awesome our friends are. They all stayed and helped clean up and put the tables and chairs away. Mini screwdrivers, bags of candy, and scented hand sanitizer were handed out as favors. All around, it was a really nice get together, and made me super excited for the wedding!

Did you play any unique games at your shower? What were they?

How did Mr. Cannon and the rest of the guys feel about doing a couples shower? Some hosts in my family were going in this direction, but I’m not sure how FI and others will take it.

@anna4041: Have beer! Problem solved.

Just kidding. Seriously, I think they really enjoyed it. My family has always done joint showers, so it was expected by my side of the family, and our friends were happy to hang out and have fun. I think if you don’t want to play any of the girlier games, that might help, although all the guys had fun just being goofy during them.

This seems like so much fun. It really has me excited for our co-ed shower that will be in January. Love the pic with the sombreros.
