Mrs. Parasol's Picture
Mrs. Parasol, San Ramon, California Age and Occupation: 25, Non-profit writer, editor, and blogger Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Law school student Engagement Date: December 19th, 2010 Wedding Date: September 2011 Venue: Bent Creek Winery (Livermore, California); Reception: Family Residence (San Ramon, California) About Me: I am a California girl at heart. I love the outdoors, sunny days at the beach, and hiking in the woods and mountains. I also love good books and am fresh from completing my Master's degree in English and Comparative Literature in New York City. Living in NYC was an amazing experience, and while I'm glad to be back on the West Coast, I'm also thankful that my two years back East gave me an opportunity to explore new places, make new friends, and indulge my passion for Broadway shows. Oh, and I received a pretty awesome proposal from Mr. Parasol in Central Park. Above all else, Mr. Parasol is my biggest cheerleader and my best friend. But even though I'm thrilled to be marrying him, I wasn't always totally on board with this whole wedding thing and at first, I wanted to run off and elope. I've finally been convinced to throw the wedding I never thought I wanted, and so now I'm busy planning an intimate September wedding filled with DIY details. Along the way, I'm slowly learning to appreciate, perhaps even love the wedding planning process.
About Mrs. Parasol

I Feel Pretty, Oh So Pretty

August 17th, 2011 @ 5:06 pm by Mrs. Parasol

It’s been a while since I’ve really talked about my wedding day look, but given that I finally had my hair and makeup trial, I guess it’s time I returned to the subject.

Remember how I originally wanted a loose, soft, curly updo for the wedding? Well the second I showed Mr. Parasol my inspiration pictures, he pointed to the one curly half-up photo I had and said, “Oh, I like that. You should do your hair exactly like that.” Boys. What do they know?

But when I listened to Mr. Parasol’s reasoning, I realized that he actually knew what he was talking about. In the first place, I wear my hair up all the time. Doing my hair requires a lot of work, and most days, I just don’t have the time or the energy to style it, so I usually throw it up into some sort of bun. When I want to dress up and look my best, though, I usually wear my hair down. So in Mr. Parasol’s mind, an updo=everyday casual hairstyle while a half-up=fancy special occasion hairstyle. Plus, he says he really likes it when I wear my hair down and curly. That was the deciding factor for me because, above all else, I want to look beautiful for Mr. Parasol.

I could have stuck with the original inspiration picture that Mr. Parasol really liked:

But I realized this isn’t quite what I want. It’s lovely, but I knew I could find something better.

This hairstyle is exactly what I was looking for. I love how soft and full her hair looks. I love that it’s more wavy than curly. I love that it’s a little messy instead of pristine and perfect. And this is how I want my hair to look on my wedding day.

As far as makeup goes, I never looked for any particular inspiration pictures. I knew that I wanted to look fresh and natural with pink cheeks and lips. I basically wanted to look like the best version of myself.

Prior to my trial, I was dreading looking for affordable hair and makeup artists, especially since I’ve never had my hair or makeup professionally done before (I know!). But Sister Parasol came through again. Her usual hairstylist also has a professional hair and makeup business with her sister. Dani and Taylor specialize in wedding hair and makeup, and fittingly, their company is called Beauty by Sisters. I also couldn’t believe how affordable they are: $75 gets you a hair and makeup trial, hair and makeup on the wedding day, and they come to your house. Unbelievable!

Anyway, let’s check out the results. This is what I look like on a normal day without hair or makeup:

This is what I look like when I do my hair and makeup:

And here’s what I looked like after my hair and makeup trial:

To say that I love this look would be an understatement! It was such a treat to have someone else do my hair and makeup, and I’m thrilled with the results.

Even so, we’ll be making a few tweaks for the wedding day: originally I had a pretty nude lip, but I felt like that washed me out too much. I swapped that for my own usual shade of gloss, and day of, Dani will bring a pinker color that will make my lips stand out. The fake eye lashes will also be smaller. They’re pretty long and full right now, and while Sister Parasol and the girls love them, they’re just a little too much for me. Something a little more toned down will be perfect.

As far as the hair goes, Taylor will place the half-up lower down on my head so that it’s at ear level. You can’t really tell in these pictures, but the pins start really close to the top of my head, and at first, I had some Snooki-like puffs.

I quickly vetoed those, and thankfully, a few pins put the offending puffs back into place. I’ll also have more curls. The back looks awesome, but the two sections in front were a little limp, so they’ll be more curly on the day of the wedding. Taylor also wants to make it more curly overall so that the curls will hold longer throughout the day. We want to prolong the inevitable limp for as long as possible.

I’ll also be adding temporary hair extensions, which Taylor is really excited about. I was worried when I first suggested extensions that she wouldn’t be able to work with them, but she love them and thinks that they’ll be the perfect addition to my wedding day look. They’ll give my hair a little more volume and length, which will be fantastic. If any of you have recommendations for temporary hair extensions, I’m all ears!

So what do you all think of my trial results? I’m still debating asking for a touch of bronze eye shadow because that’s closer to how I do my own makeup. I guess I’m not used to having such a light powder on my eyelid. What do you all think? Should I leave my eyes as they are? Or do I need a little bronze? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

How did your hair and makeup trial go? Were any of you as excited as I was to get your hair and makeup done professionally?

Oh, I just bought extensions a few months ago and I LOVE them! It comes in a pack of a bunch of different sizes so you can go as light or as full as you want.

I’m not looking forward to the makeup part of the wedding…. 95% of the time I wear absolutely no make up at all…. just some non-tinted moisturizer in the morning… and when I do wear make up the lost i get away with is eyeliner/mascara/ shawdow… a little blush and a little lip stain… I am so lame…

it looked like you maybe had a little to much face make-up… like more than your skin needed, but it might have just been my computer resolution….

over-all you look stunning! I am super excited for your big day!

First of all you look gorgeous in those pictures and I love your veil too! Secondly I am SO JEALOUS of the price you got for your hair/makeup! I spent weeks searching through dozens of local hair/makeup artists and the cheapest I found (which is the one I chose and I do adore her) is $230 for trial and day of (oh and I only budgeted around $100ish so epic budget fail).

Oh my goodness! Your trial went great. I am currently (as in, right now!) trying to find a hair and make up person. This is super stressful for me! Almost the most stressful part of wedding planning thus far for me. Lucky you! You look outstanding!!

Your trial results look great! Also, off topic, but I love the outfit you’re wearing in the photo of yourself when you do your hair and makeup. Looks great!

I think you can skip the bronze shadow. Your wedding day make-up is very feminine and natural. I feel like the bronze would fight with the softer shadow colors.

@Miss Ladyfingers: Thank you, pretty lady!
@xtatic1: Great suggestion! Taylor, who did my hair, also recommended Sally Hansen, and it’s great to know that a real-life bride has used them and loved them. The price is certainly much better than some of the really fancy extensions. Thank you!
@MySunshine: I hear you. The face makeup will definitely be toned down a bit. I have pretty clear, even skin, and I want my freckles to show more. And if you don’t like makeup, definitely only wear a little for the wedding. You want to feel comfortable on your wedding day!
@JessiTask: Thank you!
@Miss Pony: Aww, you’re so sweet! :)
@Miss Ticket: I know! I couldn’t believe the price–I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, but it never did. Needless to say, they will be getting a GREAT tip. And I wish you were closer so I could send the girls your way–they’re amazing!

@lisamarieloves: Thanks so much! And I agree–I was so anxious about finding a hair and makeup artist for the wedding. But I’d suggest asking around. Your friends may know someone, or better yet, the person who cuts your hair. That’s how I found my girls, and they’re awesome!
@Mrs. Elephant: Thank you! I felt pretty good for the rest of the day. :)
@miss.qwerty: Thank you so much! That photo was taken on my birthday, so I wanted to look especially cute.
@Mrs. Pain au Chocolat: I think I agree with you! At first, I thought I had to have the bronze. But when I saw the pictures, I realized the light eye shadow really worked.
@Miss Teaspoon: I think I was in a marrying kind of mood, which always makes me smile. :) Hehe.
@Mrs. Jaguar: Great minds think alike, Jaguar! Woo-hoo!
@Fixin2BMrs.Awesome: I think so, too! He’s just happy my hair’s going to be down–he LOVES that.
@Miss Sunhat: Thanks so much, Sunhat! You’re so sweet! :)
