Miss Kettle's Picture
Miss Kettle, Chicago, IL Age and Occupation: 26, Non-Profit Donor Resource Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Musician & Teacher Engagement Date: May 29, 2011 Wedding Date: February 2012 Venue: Patrick C. Haley Mansion, Joliet, IL About Me: I'm a city girl who loves a good escape, so I'm planning a Chicago wedding outside of the city. I've been described as a quirky yet down-to-earth drama queen who loves fiercely. I used to be a scientist, but now I'm learning to navigate the world of non-profit organizations. I love cooking, blogging, shopping, and music, and movies (Hans Zimmer is my favorite movie composer). Mr. Kettle and I had a short courtship and now we have a happy home with our cat-who-thinks-she's-people, Belle. We spend our days and nights with good food, live music, video games, family, and friends. Our wedding has become this wonderful excuse to bring together hundreds of people we can't bear to be without.
About Miss Kettle

Trying to find the perfect location for our engagement party seemed like a big deal, but only to me and Momma Kettle. Grandmother Kettle kept reminding me that she’d never been to an engagement party before so she didn’t see the big deal.

I reminded her she’d just never been invited to one before, so that wasn’t quite the same thing as it being some made-up newfangled party for Mr. Kettle and me.

I do think my mother and I made it more difficult on ourselves than we had to, though. We went through several idea before we settled on one that worked.

Researching Venues for Engagement Party : wedding chicago venues Maggian Maggian

Plan: Sit-Down Dinner At a Restaurant; like Maggiano’s in Chicago

Why It Seemed Great: Imagine that picture, except for an engagement party instead of a wedding reception. All of our family gathered for the type of food Chicagoans constantly drool over.

Why It Didn’t Work:

The cost is ridiculous for just the “appetizer” of our wedding events. And the environment is a bit too… stuffy… for the type of party we wanted to ultimately have. We envisioned our people having a great time hanging out, not being forced to stay in their seats for a plated dinner.

Plan: Art Gallery or Outdoor Venue

Why It Seemed Great: Mr. Kettle loves places that look “industrial,” like the G.R. N’Namdi Gallery in Chicago. Plus we could use our own caterer and decorations and music…

Why It Didn’t Work: and liquor license… and linens… and tables… and chairs… and the costs began too add up a bit too much. It seemed that we at least needed a place that already had a liquor license as well as tables and chairs to accommodate what is turning out to be a wedding full of intimate parties for 100-300 people. Sigh.

Metromix Chicago / Page for Andy’s Jazz Club

Plan: Jazz or Blues Club, like Andy’s Jazz Club in Chicago

Why It Seemed Great: Mr. K is a jazz musician. My mother and I were dying to incorporate that into the wedding somehow. These places have tables and chairs and are set up for live music, which is perfect for what we were once envisioning.

Why It Didn’t Work: The cost for these places had to cover them losing business for that day. And we weren’t prepared to cover costs for that much money. We’d have to have the party on Wednesday afternoon to afford it.

So we finally ended up with…drum roll please…I’ll just explain in the next post. :)

Were you able to find an engagement party venue that didn’t break the bank?

We ran into the same issues, everything we liked was just too expensive when you consider you are already paying for a wedding. Our only option would have been a park BBQ, which I was happy with but my FH said it wasn’t classy enough so we scrapped the whole thing. Can’t wait to see what you came up with!

This sounds as frustrating as searching for a reception venue! Can’t wait to see what you found for your engagement party!

I didn’t have an engagement party. (Insert pitty party here.) But yours sounds like it is going to be amazing!

We are just having a countdown BBQ. I don’t think I would be able to plan something huge for an eparty! Can’t wait to see your pick!

@xtatic1: My family is quite traditional, so we had to have an engagement party. Picking the venue was the hard part, and we were lucky to find one in our budget
@Miss Pony: I definitely feel like that was our search for a reception venue. Since we’re having our ceremony and reception in the same spot, this was my chance to really look at great party places that weren’t so formal.
@lisamarieloves: Awwww. You can live vicariously through me, like I do when I miss out on things other Bees have. :)
@Miss Tattoo: A BBQ sounds great. That’s what we were leaning toward with the outdoor venues. But just like our wedding venue, once we picked the place, that led us toward our ideas on food and theme.

We didn’t have an engagement party, it’s not a tradition I’d ever really been too aware of until I started really reading wedding blogs.

Mr CB once worked at an engagement party here, they rented out this really tony bar, they brought in all sorts of lighting (the reason the Mr was there), and I remember Mr CB coming home after and saying ‘there are weddings that cost less than that party cost!’. That’s the closest I’ve come to an engagement party!

I thought about having some friends over to celebrate, but never got it worked out, and that would have just been at our house.

It’s too bad the jazz club didn’t work out for you, that would have been such a good fit. Can’t wait to see what you chose!

@Mrs. Cinnamon Bun: A couple friends of mine who’ve gotten married in the last few years had engagement parties. It’s kind of a thing amongst my circle who don’t mind that added expense in the budget.
With the size of this wedding, it seems like we’re having a ton of pre-wedding events. Mr. Kettle’s aunt sort of suggested throwing us a shower on top of the two we’re already having. ‘Tis a lot…

we are getting married and holding our engagement party at The Sands Atlantic Beach. I’m extremely please with all the staff we’ve dealt with thus far and they are truly living up to their reputation as the best engagement party venue in Long Island http://www.thesandsatlanticbeach.com/social-events/engagement-parties
