About Mrs. High Wire

The Braid-ey Bunch

August 17th, 2011 @ 6:20 pm by Mrs. High Wire

I have the slowest growing hair on the face of the planet. When I was 18 years old, I cut my hair off to a short bob:

And then, besides routine trims, I never significantly cut the length again. I am now 24. This is how much my hair has grown:

What would you call that? 6 inches or so? In 6 years, that’s all I have to offer the hair gods. Embarrassing. Okay, in full disclosure that picture is from about 10 months ago and I have about an inch more to work with from there. So, 7 inches. WOW.

I see board posts talking about growing hair out for the wedding or a PWC, but I have to seriously consider any major length changes to my hair. Because, um. I’d have to live with it forever. There’s no “oh in 6 months it will have grown out again.” So any slight urges I have to return to my 18 year old bob’ hairdo is thrown out completely unless I want to have short hair for years and years to come. Okay, you get it.

When it came time to start thinking about hairstyles for the wedding day, I knew that the hair I had a year ago would be pretty much the exact same length I’d have today. So my first saved inspiration pictures are still perfectly valid.

My original dreams for my wedding day look had me in a straight line, free flowing, Grecian style dress. Well, those cuts were doing absolutely nothing positive for my figure, so I wound up with the flattering a-line style dress.

I would still love to incorporate some of that goddess-ey type look when it comes to my hair. For me, that means loose curls and some strategically placed little French braids.

I also wouldn’t mind my sweet little flower girls and sassy bridesmaids to ride the goddess-ey hair-do express.

But they can do whatever they want with their hair. I just had to share that adorable flower girl hairdo picture.

And now I’m totally thinking about this movie:

If you haven’t seen Tangled yet, it is a GREAT movie to watch. Even Mr. HW completely enjoyed himself. There is a funny horse in the movie that will keep your SO entertained.

What kind of hairstyle are you planning on for the wedding day? Any other slow hair growers out there?

Yeah, we have the same type of non-growing hair! I was downing prenatal vitamins before my wedding to make it grow! I love the idea of a braided look! And I really need to see Tangled!

My hair also grows super slow! It always freaks me out to cut it because I worry about it so much.

You can have my hair growth, it grows so dang fast :) I tried a braided look at a friend’s wedding and I liked it, but I wasn’t me, I think it would look wonderful with your hair though! Are you doing a trial?

I love the hairstyles you chose, I think they will all look beautiful on you. Also… I epic <3 you for posting pictures of Tangled. Not only do I LOVE the movie for just being awesome but Mr. Ticket and I chose our song from that movie.

I really like the length of your hair. However, I understand your concern about hair not growing fast enough. I dramatically cut my hair about 4 years ago after my new hair girl told me that bleaching my hair for ten years straight was not good. I was so worried my hair wouldn’t grow back but I seriously now almost have Crystal Gayle hair. Not that long, but at least the middle of my back. I don’t know what I will do with it for my wedding!! I do LOVE your idea of braids though. I can’t wait to see what you end up doing!

I finally seem to be making some progress since I cut my hair off about 2 years ago! My friend said she took flaxseed oil supplements and her hair grew like crazy. I think I might try it!

My hair actually grows really quickly (like I donate around 10-11 inches every 2 years). I have heard that prenatal vitamins work really well, though! But your braids will look good with your hair now!

Love the braid accent! So many of my inspiration images had braids but were dismissed because there would’ve been too much going on. Excited to see you rock the style!! :)

My hair was like yours too - as soon as I switched to silicone free shampoo and conditioner - my hair legitimately grew 8 inches in 4 months. It was crazy. The stuff I use is from LUSH, and it is hard shampoo and hard conditioner - takes a while to get the hang of it, but my hair who once would never grow past my shoulders is covering (and actually BELOW) my boobs.

Oh my, I have been worried about this too! (And secretly been praying for my hair to go thru a crazy growth spurt!) I am loving the braids and as others have said, it will look great with your hair!

I pretty much know what I would like to do but am concerned because if I were to cut my hair now (just to remove a year worth of horrid split ends) the length will be nowhere as long as I need it to be.

I will keep checking back, somebody MUST know a miracle potion! ;)

Fish oil supposedly makes both hair and nails nicer. Also, you might find that reducing the number of times you wash your hair in a week might help increase the overall health of your hair. I did so on the advice of my hairdresser, and i really do see a difference. Good luck — love the braids!

Have you considered getting clip in hair extensions for the day of the wedding? They are around $100 for a custom set of human hair extensions that you clip onto your head. I like them because they are MUCH more affordable than other types of hair extensions and they do not damage your hair at all.

I have your problem..I’ve tried olive oil scalp massages (leave it on a day a wash), not shampooing/washing it as often, prenatal vitamins, hair and nail vitamins, keeping it trimmed regularly and more - they seem to work for long enough to excite me and then the progress slows down.

I really like your length now, I can see beautiful god-essy style possibilities!

Love your inspiration photos! That first one is gorgeous!
And I feel you on the slow-growing hair. I decided to grow out my hair when we got engaged (a year and a half ago) and it has maybe grown ONE INCH since then. It’s insane! Hence the hair extensions. Please share if you find any miracle treatments! My mom swear by CoQ10, and my hairdresser swears by Bioton, so I’m currently trying both. :)

Ahh, I’m also sooo slow it seems. Like I’ve been growing my hair for 4 years now and probably not trimming as much as I should because I’m so afraid to chop off all my growth. Split ends ftw! I feel you HW. :(
