Miss Kettle, Chicago, IL Age and Occupation: 26, Non-Profit Donor Resource Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Musician & Teacher Engagement Date: May 29, 2011 Wedding Date: February 2012 Venue: Patrick C. Haley Mansion, Joliet, IL About Me: I'm a city girl who loves a good escape, so I'm planning a Chicago wedding outside of the city. I've been described as a quirky yet down-to-earth drama queen who loves fiercely. I used to be a scientist, but now I'm learning to navigate the world of non-profit organizations. I love cooking, blogging, shopping, and music, and movies (Hans Zimmer is my favorite movie composer). Mr. Kettle and I had a short courtship and now we have a happy home with our cat-who-thinks-she's-people, Belle. We spend our days and nights with good food, live music, video games, family, and friends. Our wedding has become this wonderful excuse to bring together hundreds of people we can't bear to be without.

Trying To Clothe The Kettle Ladies

August 18th, 2011 @ 8:08 am by Miss Kettle

I didn’t want to make a big production of finding bridesmaids’ dresses. I had my maid of honor and Mr. K’s maid of honor look online for the last month or so. We found a couple of great options. David’s Bridal seemed to be the place to go to in order to fit into a certain price range and style selection. I made an appointment for a Wednesday when most everyone was available.

My maid of honor, MOH Indy, lives in NYC, so she wasn’t available. But Mr. K’s maid of honor, his sister, was available, as were her twin daughters who are our flower girls. Also available were all my bridesmaids, except one. Our two junior bridesmaids were also there to try on dresses. Throw in my mother, Mr. K’s mother and sister, and we had a group of 14 females—only 4 of whom weren’t trying on a single dress.

It was so much more fun than you could imagine. I was going around ooh-ing and aah-ing at all the pretty dresses and taking pictures. The flower girls didn’t want to take off their “princess dresses.”

And then something magical happened.

Somehow, one dress looked great on every single bridesmaid. And it just so happened that the only two who weren’t there look good in literally everything they wear.

I was so excited. They didn’t have our color swatch match though—major color fail. I thought of the Thank You wreath I’d worked so hard on. But then I realized this dress looked good on every single bridesmaid. I had achieved something that should have been unachievable with that many girls, so I focused on what really mattered in that moment, and I asked for all the options in purple.

Personal Image: All the options in purple.

Our coordinator went to get the swatches and we picked this lovely color that looked like a rich purple but photographed kind of blue. That made me super excited because blue is the color I originally wanted.

I had all the ladies pose for one giant photo as proof that they truly all rocked the dress. I could see it in that great purple-y blue color. I was already editing invitations and color schemes. It would epic! It would legen-wait-for-it…-dary!

And then…

Our happy parade came to a screeching halt. She informed us she was mistaken about the dress being available in that color. The only options were a burgundy color and this other dusty de-saturated purple-y shade.

I was immediately ready to leave the store. She apologized too many times and I told her we were going down the street to Eva’s Bridal. We will still be getting our flower girls’ dresses from there though, since they would coordinate perfectly with my dress.

We went to another store where things only got worse. I thought the dress shopping would be hard because of all the different body types. But nope—it was something else entirely.

This post by no means should reflect poorly on David’s Bridal. The dress had just been changed to unavailable in my color a day or two before our appointment. And anyone who can deal with the dress flurry fury we presented with deserves a big hug or a cookie, or maybe even some sort of award.

How hard was it for you to find dresses that flattered your entire bridal party?

Funny you should mention the color being unavailable 2 days before….I’m my bff’s MOH and when we went dress shopping the exact same thing happened to us!!! Her color is red and they “discontinued” the Ruby color two days before we walked in. The sales lady was nice enough to put us in dresses that only came in the Apple color which she specifically said she did not like and only mentioned the Ruby thing after we fell in love with a dress….

Your flower girls are so cute! David’s seems really weird about color options. They told us one dress wasn’t available in the color we wanted, but when we looked on-line, it said it was. Also, they made a big deal about how I needed to order my sister’s orange dress early in the summer because they discontinue bright colors later in the year- I guess if you’re getting married in the winter, you better like muted tones! I just find it really bizarre.

Oh Jessica, I had huge issues with David’s discontinuing Ruby as well… my MOH was supposed to have her dress in that color.. it was a nightmare. I almost had to turn into Bridezilla! Haha. Miss Kettle, my ladies got the dress you were going to get from David’s.. only in the short version :) I’m glad I don’t have a huge bridal party to worry about like you.. I would probably lose my mind! It already took me six different trips to David’s to pick the dress I liked from the first time! lol

It’s like it was almost too good to be true. Hopefully you had better luck on your next shopping trip.

Yikes! This makes me glad I went the way I did with the wedding party! I’ve got so many different-shaped girls, I’d be looking FOREVER and probably STILL not find something perfect!
Hope you found something for the ladies! And it really bites they didn’t have the dress in that gorgeous color! Boo on them for that!

Oh for Pete sakes! How frustrating. Your flower girls are too darn cute! You will find something else you’ll love even more - I know it!

I only have my MOH and a jr. BM and even that alone was really difficult. There aren’t many options for girls under the age of 10 that don’t look like flower girl dresses in ivory/white and i knew i didn’t want her in either of those colors since she was a jr. My sister’s dress company didn’t make jr. dresses so i had to search for a similar color of the grey that my sister was wearing in taffeta for my jr. I finally found something but ihave only seen a swatch next to my sister’s dress. It should be in in another month and i’m hoping that it doesn’t look horrendous. Fingers crossed! I’m sure everything will work out for you in the end :)

That totally sucks! I would have been a very unhappy camper at that point to think you were done with the shopping trip only to start at the beginning again. I will agree with you however that the customer service at David’s Bridal is pretty darn patient, they did great with my group.

The nice thing about DB is that you can find dresses that are similar to theirs at all the other stores, though… That is definitely frustrating, though! I had trouble pleasing all of the BMs with my dress choices, too, but in the end just said screw it and picked the one that I wanted! They all look absolutely fabulous, though, so they’ll get over it :)

OK, first of all, I love all the fun pictures of your BMs and cute flower girls! It kind of makes me wish I was having a large bridal party. And second, oh my gosh, you found the holy grail of BMs dresses, and then they didn’t have your color?! That just completely sucks! I hope this story has a happy ending, though. :)

@Jessica: OMG! crazy right! It sucks that they don’t keep better track of the color options.
@Miss Cannon: They are super cute, yeah! They’re MOH Sis’ twin daughters and I love them.
@Miss Pony: Yeah, it was too good to be true. I couldn’t believe it could happen twice at all, let alone in one day.
@Ryna: Forever! No way! We found the dresses in two stores and one day. There was no way I was going out with that many ladies more than once. When we found something that worked, we were done.4
@Miss Ticket: Tell me about it!
@Miss Parasol: It turned out pretty well, yup!
