If at First You Don’t Succeed…

August 18th, 2011 @ 9:17 am by Mrs. Ticket

…slam your head against the wall until you forget what you were trying to do in the first place.

Wait…that’s not how that saying goes at all. However, that is how I felt about this endeavor once I realized what was required to “succeed.” It’s all rather silly really; I’m almost embarrassed to share… ALMOST.

This was something I did at the age of 12 and again at the age of 19 (out of sheer stupidity—my own brand of  ”rebellion”) and I had surely hoped would never need to do again. I mean really, who, at the ripe old age of 24, decides that despite her inability to manage this task in the past, should just dive right back in and do it again?

Okay, by now you think I’m crazy, right? You’re wondering what the heck I’m talking about?

Well here it is ladies and gents—I have to get my ears pierced again. That’s right—I had them pierced when I was 12. Daddy Ticket was VERY strict so it was a huge deal that I was even allowed to get them at that age. When I first got them, it was all excitement and shiny pretty new things to wear in my ears. I finally fit in with all of my friends—hooray for holes in my ears!!! As I got older I found them to be a bit more bothersome. Talking on the phone with earrings on was never my forte and I loathed sleeping with them on, but if I took them off at night I rarely remembered to wear them again in the morning.

Despite all this, I managed to keep earrings in them long enough to not let the holes close up. At 19 I even got a 2nd hole in both my ears. How bold and daring of me! Take that, mom and dad! That makes FOUR holes! (Yeah, they didn’t care at all and I ended up letting the holes close up before my first six weeks were up out of irritation with cleaning them 3 times daily.)

But when Mr. Ticket bought me a beautiful pair of diamond earrings for my 24th birthday I was quite excited. I didn’t wear earrings often, but hello! Diamonds are pretty. I happily tried putting them on… for a while. Then determination set in—I was going to get these suckers on if it required me to re-pierce my own ears there and then. The posts on these suckers were THICK. Lo and behold, after 30 minutes fidgeting with each ear, I did it! Holy cheese did it hurt, but I got them on and they were gorgeous. Now obviously I wasn’t about to take them off any time soon after all that work getting them in!

Please excuse the horrible blurry phone pic. It’s the only camera that wasn’t packed. (Personal Photo)

Well… after about a week of wearing them (we were in the midst of moving Mr. Ticket from PA to CA and I didn’t want to lose them so I REFUSED to take them off) my ears were not so pleased with me…

Let’s just say once I took them off and gave my poor ears a well deserved break they refused to let me wear ANY earrings again.

So after a few months of further attempts to put my beautiful birthday presents back on, I came to the inevitable conclusion—the holes in my head that I possessed for 12 years had finally closed up. Now, under normal circumstances I wouldn’t have minded so much—as I said, I hardly wore earrings anyways. But then Mr. Ticket proposed…

Logic was out the window at that point. I HAVE to wear those beautiful earrings he bought me for our wedding day! I just HAVE to! So here we are ears…are you ready to tango once more? I’m not so sure I am, but this is one pre-wedding to-do that only I can check off this list…

Did you go for re- or new piercings for your wedding?

Just a thought - you can convert pierced earrings to clip-ons in many cases. Might be worth looking into if piercings are really that big of an issue for you! Good luck, either way!

By forcing the earrings through you’re probably ripping up the skin on the inside of your piercing. If you don’t want that to get irritated/infected/OUCH you need to occasionally clean with Peroxide to kill any infection (it will literally bubble!) and then keep them clean with a piercing solution. If you keep them clean and let them heal a couple weeks they will probably be just fine! I would recommend buying a little pair of hypo-allergenic studs for the process. Those diamond earrings are beautiful, but probably adding more weight/stress on your ears.

Good Luck! With patience… you’re going to be able to wear those beauties! :)

I got another hole in my left ear right after we got engaged. I’ve had my ears pierced since I was 7, but the left ear piercing was always too low and I couldn’t put any earring even remotely heavy in it, so you’re not alone :)

Didn’t have to pierce them again but had to prepare for the wedding by starting to wear a pair of studs. My ears have been pierced since I was ten (18 years ago), but I haven’t regularly worn earrings for over ten years. I can usually get a pair in for special occasions without a problem, but of course the day of the wedding it took me ten minutes to get one of the earrings in. It worked out in the end, but definitely give your ears some time to adjust.

I had my ears pierced at 5 and 12, and no matter how well I (and my mom) took care of them, no matter what method or metals we used, they got infected. I just think my body has given me a firm NO on the piercing front, and I resigned myself to clip-ons a long time ago. I am totally sad I’ll never be able to get fine jewelry earrings though :(

Those earrings are gorgeous.

I understand your pain I got a second hole my senior year of high school and I had them for 6mths and I took the earrings out to change them for senior pictures and one of my holes closed shortly there after… That was 10 years ago. Since then I have been rocking the 3 holes instead of 4 and aside from the occasion you’re missing an earring I’m cool with it but now that we’re getting married I don’t want a lopsided head in pics for the wedding… So I must re-pierce!

Good luck!

Owwwie! I actually got my ears re-pierced last month and it was completely quick and painless - much to my surprise. i went to a piercing shop that my sister frequents. After paying way to much for piercing studs, the piercing technician was able to get the job done in under 2 minutes flat - zero pain. I only wore earrings from age 12-14, so it’s been over 16 years - I was really surprised. I had to wear the studs for a month and now I can wear whatever I want.

You might want to go to a reputable piercing shop to get their opinion. I’m sure they’ve seen everything.

Those are super pretty, Ticket! I had six holes in each ear when I was younger, and then my body just said, “No deal!” and my ears got swollen and started oozing puss out of all the holes. I took them out and they all closed up except my first holes. So, I don’t wear earrings very often.

But, I would suggest getting them re-pierced in a piercing studio instead of the mall. I’ve heard a lot of good things about the ease of healing when you get them done with a needle instead of a gun. Hopefully you have an easier time with them this time!

Thank you everyone for the helpful advice. Unfortunately this post was written a few months ago (it was a catch up post I forgot to update) and I have already gotten new holes (so far so good).

@Mrs. Snow Cone - I was actually wondering about just using clip ons, but I was scared they would look weird on me as an adult (I wore them as a kid a lot).

@Hydrangea09 - Definitely learned that lesson the hard way!

@sarahbabs - That is such a bummer! But on the bright side you still get to wear pretty necklaces, bracelets, rings and brooches. Make sure to remind your SO of that =)

@lmoss78 - So glad I’m not the only one going through this! haha

@Miss Cannon - I REALLY wish I would have thought of using a piercing studio! So far I’m having no troubles with my ears so I think they will be okay but that really was a better idea haha.

I had my ears pierced at 7, but let them close because they were so irritated and infected. I pierced them again at 16, and it was great! Then I pierced a second hole in each ear at 18, and they got super infected, and the infection spread, and so I let everything close because I couldn’t stand it. I got them pierced AGAIN at 28, several months before the wedding, and this time it finally seems to have kept–I went to a professional piercer and followed their care instructions (i.e., stopped messing with it and cleaning it with hp or other irritants, and just let it be) and I’ve never had a problem. Go figure.

Funny that the posts were so big on your earrings! My aunts in Pakistan send me jewelry sometimes, and the posts are huge (to me). Since I went with the piercing studio and they used slightly larger jewelry for the piercings, I can ACTUALLY wear them now!

I second clip-ons, if real ones bother you and you’re not up for re-piercing. My aunt only ever wore clip-ons because a bad run-in with her baby niece resulted in a ripped earlobe (ouch!). I got my ears pierced at five, and I thought I was so freaking cool. Of course, my ears are super sensitive, and it’s hard for me to wear earrings at all for any amount of time. That still didn’t stop me (like you) from getting that second stupid piercing that has long since closed up. I think for the wedding, I’m doing a simple pair of pearl studs. That might be all I can manage!

Make sure you’re getting your vitamins! Totally random, but I always have better luck keeping my piercing(s) happy when I’m taking good care of myself/my skin.

Also, yeah, infection is SO BAD. I had an infected nose piercing for a while and it was miserable. Cleanliness is next to godliness!

I’ve had my ears pierced three times. Once, in 3rd grade, and that’s when we found out that I have a severe allergy to nickel. Those closed up. Then, in 7th grade, and they pierced them crooked, and I’m so squeamish I couldn’t stand futzing with the post to get it in at the righ angle. Those closed up. Then, in 12th grade, for prom. I got a keloid scar in one ear, and I was trying on a shirt in a dressing room and the earring ripped right out my ear - like, downwards! UGHH. Those closed up. End of story - I won’t be wearing earrings, pierced or clip-on, for my wedding.

Oh my goodness, Miss Ticket…you just made me literally run upstairs and make sure my earrings still fit in my ears! I have several ear piercings (6, to be exact), but I have a really bad habit of forgetting to put posts in my first holes. I’ve had them forever, so I doubt they’d close entirely, but they are definitely smaller than they used to be! At least I don’t have to worry about the others because I never take them out.

Good luck with the re-piercing! That’s definitely the route I would go in that situation. Your earrings are too gorgeous not to wear. :)

I have a whole bunch of body piercings, 6 currently in, and I had 8 at one point. Unfortunately I managed to let the lobe on my left ear close so I might have to redo just one! Lol.

Goodness! You don’t sound like a piercings lady at all Ticket! I think you should get them pierced again for the wedding, but don’t make such a big deal about keeping the hole open. If it closes again and you need them pierced again, just do it again. That’s better than all the in-between stress.

I pretty much NEVER wear earrings. Maybe once a year? So whenever I do wear them I always have to push through a layer or two of skin. Nothing too crazy, and I guess I’m used to it by now. Of course by the end of the day wearing them my ears feel weird and continue to feel weird the following day. But technically they’re still pierced!
