Mrs. Snow Cone's Picture
Mrs. Snow Cone, Pittsburgh/Johnstown, PA Age and Occupation: 23, Public Health Graduate Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, Engineer Engagement Date: April 9, 2010 Wedding Date: August 2011 Venue: OMOS Church ceremony/Sunnehanna Country Club reception About Me: I’m one of the lucky ones---I met my future husband at the ripe old age of 13, started dating him as a mature woman of 15, and have been enjoying the ride ever since. Here we are, 8 years later, living in Pittsburgh, planning a "homestination" wedding in the place our school romance began---Johnstown, PA. I thrive on talking a mile a minute, eating my weight in chocolate, and internet shopping. I love a lengthy to-do list almost as much as I love a healthy amount of chaos in my life. Mr. Snow Cone and I watch countless episodes of Friends and The West Wing on repeat, root for rival college sports teams, and make each other laugh each and every day. We’re putting together a small-town wedding with a big personality and a classically modern (or modernly classic?) look for 250 of our closest family and friends. It’s been 8+ years in the making, and sometimes I still can’t believe I’m finally getting to marry my high school sweetheart!
About Mrs. Snow Cone

My hair grows at a pace that makes a snail race look like the Indy 500. I’ve always kind of hovered between chin-length and shoulder-length, which made growing my hair out for the wedding to be quite the undertaking. But, by George, I was going to have as much hair to work with as humanly possible. I didn’t want my hairstyle selection to be limited by my insufficient length, so the entirety of our engagement was devoted to growing my tresses out. The finished product?

This was easily the longest my hair has ever been. My plan was always to donate it to a wig organization, since I knew that long hair wasn’t really my standard. A few months back, I started to measure how much hair would survive the donation and realized that it was going to be short. So, I decided that I’d have to tough out the long hair for a few more months post-wedding in order to be left with a manageable length after lopping most of it off.

Enter the hottest and muggiest July I have ever experienced. Every day was like its own individual form of torture, and the hair covering my neck added an extra helping of sweaty grossness. I was miserable, and I frequently let Mr. Snow Cone know about it. I think I complained one too many times, because he opted to put his foot down. Knowing that we were headed to balmy South Carolina for our honeymoon, he realized that escaping the heat and humidity wouldn’t be happening for a long while. Apparently he wasn’t hepped up on the idea of having his wife complain about her hair and the heat for the duration of his honeymoon. Weird, I know. He declared that my happiness was more important than the length of my post-chop hairdo, so I was to cut it and cut it fast after the wedding.

Rather than put up any semblance of a fight, I listened to his reasoning. And then picked up the phone and called my lovely hairdresser friend to set an appointment for 10 AM the day after the wedding. I waltzed into her swivel chair, a whopping 11 hours after our reception ended, more nervous than I expected to be. I had always set my sights on donating the minimum of 10 inches for Locks of Love, so that’s what she measured to. And then she paused and asked me if I really wanted to do a full 10, given how short the end result would be. I decided to compromise and donate only the minimum of 8 to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths program. I figured an extra two inches of length would be worthwhile, plus, in my mind, a donation is a donation, right? Anyhow, enough with the chit-chat, here’s the finished product!

It is short but it feels amazing. I’m still getting the whole styling thing down, but I’m still quite pleased with how it turned out. Truth be told, it’s probably a wee bit shorter than my ideal length, but that’s the best part about hair—it grows. In no time (hopefully), I’ll have some more hair to play with and I’ll get back to my typical styles. Having hair that’s a little on the short side so that cancer patients can have hair period is a sacrifice I’m OK with making.

How soon after the wedding are you cutting your hair?

I probably won’t as I have wanted my long hair back for awhile. I have more of an issue with my hair getting thicker, not longer. Today, in this humidity, I feel like a lion.

You got it cut so fast and it looks great! I always feel so weird after cutting that much hair off, but it is so worth it knowing your hair is going to a good cause!

I just got a trim and highlight last night and was tempted to chop it all of right then and there! I’ve been thinking about going the day after as well. Glad to know someone else has done it! Love the short hair!

Looks great!!!!
I’ll confess, I don’t cut my hair shorter than shoulder length because it’s got a life of it’s own and I wear contacts. If it gets shorter than shoulder-length, it gets in my eyes!!! So no short chops for me!

Mine hair cutting story isn’t as drastic as yours but I cut my hair in February to add bangs. I wanted something drastic and something different so I went for a straight cut bang. I LOVED it! It was sassy and very trendy. i got so many compliments. You would not beleive how it changed my whole look! BUT…I knew I did not want bangs for my wedding day. I wanted something sweeping and romantic not edgy and sassy. So I haven’t cut them since :( boooo. But it will be worth it for the wedding and I told my hairdresser/cousin that she is to have her scissors ready the very next morning after the wedding! I cannot wait to have my bangs back!

Oh my gosh! You are amazing. Your short hair is so cute and I totally admire you for sticking to your plans about donation. But I can’t believe you went to the salon the morning after your wedding!! That is so fantastic and makes me smile. This is why I love wedding bee so much. I absolutely love to know what other brides are doing!! I will definately be cutting my hair after the wedding, but probably not quite as soon as you did!! =)

The day after the wedding! I think you may win the race for fastest post wedding chop! Your new shorter do looks great on you. I still have my hair and I think I’m going to keep growing it a little bit longer. I haven’t had hair this long before and now that I’m learning new tricks (like the sock bun or side braid) it makes it a bit more fun. Sadly I can’t donate my hair because everyone wants hair that has not been highlighted. :(

This is definitely an altruistic move on your part. I like the short cut on you! It’s very inspiring, what you have done. :)
